Many of us nowadays are unaware of the true form of Guru. Many of us consider that a Guru is a person with long beard, someone wearing a saffron dress or one who can perform some magical trick. Many of us also consider that there is nothing like a true Guru in this world now and this word is just like an ancient imaginary form to them.
However, if we go through our ancient texts like Vedas, Purans, Upanishads etc. then we can gain a lot of confidence in this word. Guru is not a like any other common person and thus Gurutatva (essence of Guru) itself becomes divine. All of these texts talk about our great Gurus & their significant contribution towards the society.
The Guru may be in the form of Vishwamitra, who helped his disciple Ram, to defeat his enemy Ravana & eradicate the demons from this earth. The Guru may also be in the form of Ram Krishna Param who blessed his pupil Vivekanand with Divine knowledge, using which Vivekanand helped the Indians to regain faith in themselves & their religion. Two examples have been quoted here from two very vastly separated eras of our Aryan civilization; just to show how old is this Guru & Disciple relationship.
Mentioned below is one of Kabir’s famous sayings, where he has tried to narrate the greatness of Guru.
Guru Govind Dou Khade, Ka Ke Lagun Paaye,
Balihari Guru Aapne, Govind Diyo Batae
Here Kabir mentions the Guru to be greater than the God. He says that when Guru & Govind (Lord Krishna) both appeared before him, he wasn’t able to decide as to whose feet he should touch. Then realising the supremacy of Guru, who enabled him to witness Govind, he touched his Guru’s feet.
Guru is one who fulfills both materialistic & non-materialistic wishes to his disciple. If you are empty stomach & the Guru tries to teach you Sadhana, then you will not be able to concentrate in the Sadhana. Instead your entire focus will be on the food. Due to this reason, first we need to eradicate the poverty from our life by means of Sadhanas.
Once we are able to eradicate all the shortcomings of our life, then only we can achieve totality in life…….this is necessary because we are living a materialistic life. An ascetic doesn’t know the problems that we face in a household life; a man wearing saffron clothes can’t understand of the situation when the daughter becomes 24 years old. He can’t understand the tension but you can understand that.
An ascetic can’t understand the hunger. This is because wherever he will stand & give his blessings, people will feed them ghee & various sweets. They are far healthier than us, their face isn’t pale. They have reddish cheeks and our cheeks are all deflated. None of these ascetics are dying out of hunger, all of them are living a healthy life & we are all pale. We are sad and full of tension, they are healthier because they are fed with food free of cost…and we have to put in lots of efforts for the same. We barely survive by all our efforts.
Thus the meaning of Sadhana is that what all shortcomings are there in our life…..if you have lots of diseases then no matter how many Sadhanas Guru teach you, you won’t achieve success in it because you won’t be able to accomplish the Sadhana. Will you cough or perform the Sadhana?
If you don’t have a son, still you won’t be able to perform Sadhana because a tension is there in your mind. If you have a grown-up daughter, again you won’t be able to concentrate. If the wife quarrels with her husband or the husband quarrels with the wife and even if you sit in a sadhana with closed eyes…..then the wife will start shouting, “I already told you not to go there, you won’t get anything, they don’t teach anything out there. You are uselessly sitting here with closed eyes, are you going to the shop or not, what are you doing….& this will start the quarrel.
Thus it is the duty of the Guru to first solve the problems of his disciple by means of the Sadhanas. If he is able to remove all these hurdles from your life, then only he is Guru, a person just delivering his sermons can’t be a true Guru….the problem doesn’t get solve like this and such a person is also not a Guru.
Guru is one who can understand your problems. Guru is one who can understand your pain. Guru is one who can relieve you from your miseries, who can teach you the Sadhana, who can give you the mantra using which you can eradicate all your pains & shortcomings of your life.
You can’t get rid of your problems through your efforts. Had it been possible, you wouldn’t need Guru. If you could get free of all your debts or of your poverty then why would you need Guru, then what is the necessity of meeting the Guru? You have already invested forty five years of effort in your life & you have already tried all other means.
You have tried for forty five years & you know that the son doesn’t obey you. No matter how much you try to convince him, he will not obey you. If the son is not studying, then he is not studying. If there are quarrels in between husband & wife, then they are there. If there is some disease then you have taken hundreds of medicine for the ailment but still it is troubling you. Now if the disease is not getting cured by your & doctor’s efforts, then what is the solution for this?
The solution is that you should have the correct Guru, one who understands your problems & who himself has achieved totality in life. If he himself is incomplete, then what can he give you? One who himself is desirous of getting five rupees from you, how would he give you completeness in life?
If I expect that you should give me ten rupees, then how come I can make you compete in life? If I am a beggar, then what can I give you? I must myself be successful in the Sadhanas.
I am saying so because Sadhana is the only mean by which we can remove all the problems from our life. The shashatras emphasizes on a single shloka, on one thought processes only –
Poorvai Mataam Poorna Madaiva Tulyam,
Gyaanorvataam Paritam Bhavatam Sadaiva.
Chintyovameva Bhavatam Paripoorna Poornam,
Poornom Twadaam Bhavata Poorna Madaiva Poornam.
Sadhana is the means by which we can achieve totality in life by chanting the mantras related to various Gods & Goddesses. We can obtain wealth by performing Lakshmi Sadhana & we can become knowledgeable by the Sadhana of Goddess Saraswati. We are humans & we can’t achieve totality in life by the help of humans, we need some divine powers for the same.
It is not necessary to be acquainted of the Gods for performing a Sadhana. You can chant mantras related to Gods, but Gods aren’t familiar with you also. You offer something to Lord Ram but he is not familiar with you & you even don’t know this. There should be a relationship in between you both, you can dissolve water in water, oil in oil.
You can build up a relationship by the means of Sadhanas, both of you will get familiar with each other. Due to this reason only this shloka includes the mantra related to Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess Saraswati, Lord Shiva. If you can chant this mantra everyday & with complete devotion, it will definitely reduce the gap in between you & the Gods.
Definitely they are complete & due to this reason only we they are called, they are called Lakshmi, they are called Saraswati, they are called Shiva, Vishunu, Brahma. The reason they are called so is that they possess completeness in whatever core they possess. When the gap will reduce, you will be able to achieve whatever they possess.
We can easily get some thousand rupees from a multi-millionaire. Lakshmi herself is multi-millionaire, she is the owner of the entire worldly possessions. We can obtain wealth from her, but only if we can reduce the gap…..& we can do that by the means of Sadhanas. Sadhanas mean chanting of mantras & mantra chanting means selection of the words which Gods can understand. If I explain you something in Chinese or some other foreign language for half an hour, you won’t be understand a single word.
There is an abusive word in Rajasthan, Nigura (meaning someone without a Guru). One who doesn’t have a Guru, his life is useless. It’s as offensive as an abuse related to mother, if you don’t have a Guru, who will guide you in your life & after your death. I bless that you may meet a true Guru in your life, may you achieve totality in your life so that you become divine & complete. I bless you once again from the depth of my heart.
