Once a question arose in the mind of Lord Narad to understand the merits a living being attains after being in the presence of a divine soul. Thus, to quench his thirst for knowledge, he went to Vaikunth Lok to visit his Guru, Lord Vishnu. On reaching to Vaikunth Lok and seeing Lord Vishnu, he offered his reverence and asked, “My Lord, a question is troubling me. I want to understand the significance of being in the presence of a divine being?”
Listening to the query of Lord Narad, Lord Vishnu smiled & said, “Dear Narad, this is a very simple question. You can get the answer to this query by just visiting a forest on the earth. A baby parrot has just taken birth, go and ask this question to it & you will get the answer.” Listening to these words, Lord Narad bowed to Lord Vishnu & left for earth.
He went to the forest & searched the new-born parrot & asked him the question, “Dear parrot, I am told by Lord Vishnu that you can answer my question. So, I am here to know the merits a living being attains after being in the presence of a divine soul”. As soon as Lord Narad asked the question, the baby parrot immediately fell out of the nest & died. Lord Narad was left perplexed seeing what just happened in front of him. He immediately returned to Vaikunth Loka to share what he had just witnessed with Lord Vishnu. He narrated the entire incidence to Lord Vishu who did not respond but told him to return to earth & visit a village where a calf has taken a birth & it can resolve his query.
Lord Narad bowed down to Lord Vishnu & returned to earth to visit the new-born calf. “Dear calf, I am told by Lord Vishnu that you can answer my question. So, I am here to know the merits a living being attains after being in the presence of a divine soul”. As soon as Lord Narad asked the question, just like before, the calf fell on the ground & died immediately. Lord Narad, being a divine soul himself, got in a great shock. He was finding it difficult to digest as to why these new born babies are dying just by his mere presence. Full of grief, he returned to Vaikunth Loka & shared his pain with Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu consoled him & said, “Narad, every living being that takes a birth must die one day. Don’t blame yourself for the death of those creatures. However, now you will have to go to the stable of the king of Kashi where a horse has just taken birth & it will answer your question.”
Lord Narad was a bit reluctant to go this time, but had to leave again as it was the wish of Lord Vishnu. Just like before, the tragedy repeated again & the new-born horse too died. Lord Narad started to doubt his divinity & couldn’t figure out what was going wrong. Why all these new-borns are dying listening to his words. Is he asking the question incorrectly? What will I say to Lord Vishnu, He is guiding me from one source to other to help resolve my query, but they all the dying listening to my words. Should I trouble Lord Vishnu again?
Lord Narad somehow recollected himself & reached Vaikunth Loka again. With a heavy soul, he said, “Dear Lord! I am not sure what sort of sins I had committed due to which these innocent beings are dying by just hearing my words?” Lord Vishnu pacified Lord Narad & told him, “Dear Narad, you have followed all my instructions but still you did not get an answer to your question. I am requesting you one last time to go to the palace of the king of Kashi. The queen has just given birth to a boy. I am sure the newborn prince will definitely be able to answer your question.”
Lord Narad trembled on the thought of visiting the new-born Prince & bringing misfortune up on him. He said, “Dear Lord, I don’t want to be responsible for killing one more living being? I don’t think the answer to my query is more significant than the life of these beings.” He was about to leave when Lord Vishnu stopped him & said, “Dear Narad, trust me. I am sure you will not return dejected this time.”
Even though Lord Narad didn’t want to go to visit the prince, he even didn’t want to disobey Lord Vishnu. Thus, he left for the palace & appeared in the court. The king was already happy because of being blessed with a son. When he looked at Lord Narad, his joy knew no bounds & he bowed down with full devotion & thanked Lord Narad for his visit.
Lord Narad then told the king that he wanted to see his son. The king happily brought his new-born son & placed him in Lord Narad’s arms. Though frightened from inside, Lord Narad brought a smile on his face & looked at the child & asked, “Dear child, what is the merit a living being attains after being in the presence of a divine soul?”
The baby smiled & said, “O great soul! You have still not understood the significance. Join the dots of all the events that has happened with you recently. I am the very same parrot, calf & horse you visited earlier. With each meeting, I gained merits & got released from the birth of an insignificant creature & finally elevated me to the most precious human form in this life. I hope you are able to understand the significance now & I am grateful to you.” Now Lord Narad was able to see the bigger picture. All his doubts were removed & he thanked his Guru, Lord Vishnu for his teachings.
This small story explains the significance of a great Guru in life. The word Guru holds the most significant importance in Sanatan Dharma. Guru is the most revered God & is considered as the incarnation of ParBrahma itself. A person who has attained the divine blessing of a SadGuru in life has nothing else to be attained. Being in the presence of a SadGuru or getting a glimpse of a SadGuru reduces the sins of the disciples. The disciples assimilate divine blessings by just touching the holy feet of the SadGuru.
We disciples are unable to understand the reason behind the orders of our SadGuru as are vision is short sighted. Even though we don’t understand the real reason why our Guru has given us the order, but the Guru understands that all those orders are like the steps of the stairs that will make the disciple climb to greater heights. A true disciple follows the orders of his Guru & attain what all he wishes for in life.
Guru Kumhar Sishya Kumbh Hai,
Ghadi Ghadi Kade Khot,
Antar Haath Sahar De,
Bahar Bahe Chot.
It is Guru who transforms the disciple in something worthy. A disciple is like a clay which doesn’t has any shape & worth. Guru, as a potter, continuously strikes on the disciple from outside (i.e. on his ego, his shortcomings etc.) while also giving a support from inside (nourishes his soul). Doing so, the Guru transforms the disciple from a shapeless clay into a useful pot.
