Our world today is filled with tensions, problems, scarcity & what not. People today live their life under such a stress that heart attacks, blood pressure, diabetes etc. have become a common disease in even younger generation. People today are just running behind useless materialistic pleasures & have forgotten the real essence of joy in life. Due to this reason, no matter what a person attains in life, soon they get bored out of it & then they try to chase something new to bring a sense of accomplishment & peace in their life. However, we humans can attain peace only after we are able to properly energize our Pran element.
In Sanskrit, the word Pran means – the element which exists in both this universe & in the living being. This Pran thus creates an unending bond between the living beings & the universe. Pran in other word is also called as life. A living being is declared dead the moment there is no Pran in it. Shastras described Pran as Pran Yati Jiva Yati Iti Pranh i.e. the element that is the essence of a living being is Pran. Word Pranayam thus means gaining a control over the Pran. One can learn to focus the ever-wandering thoughts at a point with the means of Pranayam & can thus attain great feats in life.
Breathing quickly drains out our energy very soon. One must have observed someone or oneself breathing heavily after a quick run. During this period our body consumes energy quickly as an outcome of heavy breathing. Various scientists have performed experiments on the breathing habits & life duration of several animals.
They found that a rabbit breathes 38 times in a minute & lives for around 8 years, pigeon breathes at a similar rate & too has a life expectancy of around 8 years. Dog breathes 28 times a minute & lives for around 13 years. Human beings breathe 12 times a minute & lives for around 100 years. Tortoise breathes 4 times in a minute & has a life expectancy of 200 years. The above corelation can help us deduce that the smaller the number of breaths, higher is the life expectancy. In today’s world, human beings breathe at a rate of 15-16 breathes per minute & as a result their life expectancy has reduced from 100 years.
As we mentioned earlier, higher breathing rate means more energy consumption & thus raises our body temperature. This increased temperature also adversely impacts our life duration. So, if we practice deep breathing, we can reduce the amount of energy consumed by our body & keep it healthy for a longer duration. This is the basis of Pranayam in which a human being takes deep breaths. Once a person gets used to breathing deeply, the person unknowingly continues to breathe at a much slower rate & hence is able to live a long & healthy life.
Our lungs collapse & expand 18 times in a minute & thus in 24 hours this process is repeated for 25,920 times. Most of the humans take shallow breaths which fills our lungs with just 500 cc of air. Our lungs are capable of holding around 1200 cc of fresh air & due to this shallow breathing, humans don’t provide enough fresh air to their body. That means we don’t even provide 50% of the required oxygen to our body in general. As a result, out lungs start to become weaker which leads to issues like tuberculosis, cough & all sorts of issues related to chest.
When a person starts to practice Pranayam, then the amount of fresh air a person breathes is around 1200 cc to 1400 cc. With more practice, the person can intake around 2000 cc of air which further strengthens the lungs, provides more oxygen to the body & brain & thus makes the body healthy from various aspects. Not only this, even our digestive system gets benefitted with deep breathing. The person starts to feel more energetic, retention power of the memory increases & feels fresh all the time.
Pranayam is also termed as the divine energy because with each breath we not just pull into fresh air, we also pull into the divine energy surrounding us. This divine energy is the energy of God which is controlling this entire universe. Thus, once a person gains control over the breaths, the person also starts to gain divine consciousness. With this consciousness, the person slowly start to understand the various waves around us. Once a person is able to get connected with these waves, one can witness what is happening across the globe similar to how we can see anything on television.
In gross term, Pranayamis the process of intake of air, holding the air & then leaving it.The process of breathing in is termed as Purak, holding the breath is termed as Kumbhak & exhaling the air is termed as Rechak. These are all at a very high level explanation of Pranayam & only a learned Guru can teach the nitty-gritties of various aspects of Pranayam. There are several forms of Pranayam. In general, there are 84 forms like Shitati, Sitkari, Ujjayi, Bhrsika etc. A person who regularly practices Pranayam gets blessed with a beautiful, powerful & an energized body.
And not only this, one can even activate the Kundalini with the means of Pranayam. One can make the divine energy rise upward towards the divine Shastrar Chakra by means of regular practice. Thus, Pranayam must be an essential part of our daily life. By the means of Pranayam, we can make our body healthy, pious and balanced.
By means of Pranayam we can bring a harmony between our body, soul & mind & open an endless source of possibilities in life. Not only this, but we can also even see the divine with our eyes by the means of Pranayam.
