When Arjun was unsure of his abilities & lacked confidence, Hanuman took the form of a flag on Arjuna’s chariot, & with his presence, Arjun was able to overcome his doubts & emerge victorious in the battle.
After the battle of Kurukshetra, Lord Krishna asked Arjun to step down the chariot first. After this, Lord Krishna stepped down & then Lord Krishna thanked Hanuman for staying with them during the war in the form of a flag on the chariot. Hanuman came in his original form, bowed to Lord Krishna, & flew away. As soon as he left, the chariot turned into ashes. Lord Krishna explained to the shocked Arjun, that the chariot would have burnt a long time back because of celestial weapons thrown at it during the war. However, Lord Hanuman protected it during the entire battle.
Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, & Lord Shiva also hold Hanuman in high regard & have expressed their admiration & respect for him. Lord Brahma blessed Lord Hanuman with the ability to live as long as Lord Rama’s story is told & remembered. He recognized Hanuman’s devotion & loyalty towards Lord Rama & granted him this boon as a mark of his respect. Lord Vishnu gave Lord Hanuman his divine powers & blessed him with immortality.
