The origin of Bhairava can be drawn from the conversation between Lord Brahma & Lord Vishnu described in Shiv MahaPuran where Lord Vishnu asks Lord Brahma who is the supreme creator of the Universe. Lord Brahma proclaimed himself to be the greatest of all. On hearing this, Lord Vishnu laughed at Lord Brahma for his quick & overconfident talks. They debated for some time & then decided to get the resolution from the four Vedas. Rig Veda mentioned Lord Shiva is the supreme as He is the Lord who controls all the living beings. Yajur Veda replied that Lord Shiva is supreme as He is worship through various Yagnas & other such holy tasks. Sam Veda stated Lord Trayambakam is the supreme Lord as He is the one who is worshipped by various Yogis & the God & is the one who controls the entire world. Finally, Atharva Veda said, all human beings can see the Lord through Bhakti Marg & such a deity who can remove all the worries of human beings is indeed Shankar. Listening to these words from the four Vedas, both Lord Brahma & Lord Vishnu started laughing in disbelief.
Then Lord Shiva appeared as a powerful divine light. Lord Brahma stared at Him furiously with his fifth head. Lord Shiva immediately created one living being & stated that he will be King of Kaal & will be known as Kaal Bhairav. Meanwhile, Lord Brahma’s fifth head was still burning with fury & Kaal Bhairav cut that head from Brahma. As cutting off one head is equivalent to killing, Lord Shiva directed Bhairav to go around various holy places to get rid of Brahma Hatya. Kaal Bhairav, with Brahma’s head in his hand, started taking bath at various holy places, worshipped various Lords, nevertheless saw that Brahma Hatya Dosh was following him all along. He could not get rid of this sin. Finally, Kaal Bhairav reached the Moksha Puri, Kashi. The moment Kaal Bhairav entered Kashi, Brahma Hatya Dosha disappeared into the netherworld. The head of Brahma, (Kapal) fell at a place which was called Kapal Mochan & there was a pilgrimage which was later called Kapal Mochan Teerth. Then onwards Kaal Bhairav stationed himself permanently in Kashi, giving shelter to all his devotees. Those living in or visiting Kashi, must worship Kaal Bhairav & He grants protection to all His devotees.
