Once there was a great Guru who had many disciples. The Guru was growing old & thus each of the disciples wanted to be the successor of the Guru. The Guru was aware of the thoughts of his disciples & thus he planned to test out the disciples & find his true successor.
One day he took all his disciples to the town & showed them around the entire city. Finally, the Guru took them to the street where all the prostitutes were living. The local people as well as the disciples were amused as to why the Guru was heading towards such a defamed area. Stopping in front of one of the houses, the Guru turned to the disciples & told them, “I need to complete some necessary work here. You should wait outside & I will be back when the work is finished.”
He then entered the house. When the prostitute saw the holy man, she bowed down to him. “O great soul, it is my greatest fortune that you have come into my house. Please tell me how I can serve you,” she said.
“I wish to spend the night here. I request you to provide me a separate room & you should go and sleep in another room. Also, I want some food to eat, but ensure that it is brought from outside in a covered plate. I will also need a bottle of honey.”
“It would be my greatest fortune to fulfill your wish,” said the prostitute. When the disciples saw the food being brought to their Guru with a big bottle alongside, they started to murmur.
“Do you believe your eyes? I couldn’t have ever imagined in my wildest dream what we are seeing in front of our eyes! Our Guru has fallen miserably! He is eating meat, drinking liquor and spending his time with prostitutes!”
Soon, their mind got occupied with all the dark things convincing them that their Guru had been deceiving them. Thus, one after another, all but one of the disciples left the place. The next day, the Guru came out and found only one of his disciples there. “Where are all your brothers?” he asked.
“They were all captivated by the illusions of their mind & left the place one after the other,” said the disciple. “And why didn’t you go away with them?” asked the Guru.
“Gurudev, I have no place in this world to go. As I have obtained refuge in you, so where on this earth can I go?”, said the disciple.
Listening to the words of the disciple, the Guru embraced him & made him the successor the very next day.
