Ravana, one of the most powerful and complex characters in ancient Indian history, was born into a highly respected and learned family. His father, Sage Vishrava, was known for his wisdom and spiritual knowledge. His mother, Kaikeshi, belonged to the Asura (demon) lineage and was a princess. Ravana’s heritage was, therefore, a unique combination of divine wisdom and powerful ambition.
His grandfather, Sage Pulastya, was an even greater personality. He was one of the ten Prajapatis created directly by Lord Brahma, and also one of the Saptarishis—the seven great sages who were known for guiding the universe with their knowledge. Being born in such a family meant that Ravana was surrounded by learning, discipline, and spiritual teachings from a very young age.
Even as a child, Ravana showed signs of being different. He was not like other children. While most kids would simply follow instructions, Ravana had a strong personality and a sharp sense of self-respect. He was intelligent, bold, and unafraid to question traditions that did not make sense to him.
One day, when Ravana was only five years old, an event occurred that would change the direction of his life forever. His father, Vishrava, handed him a small bowl and asked him to go to the nearby village and beg for food. This was not unusual for Brahmins in those days. It was a common practice for them to live by seeking alms, as it encouraged humility and detachment from material desires.
However, Ravana did not see it that way. Instead of quietly obeying his father, the young boy stood firm and said, “Why should I beg from others?” His father was surprised by his response and explained calmly that begging was a part of their way of life. “We are Brahmins,” Vishrava said. “This is how we live.”
But Ravana was not convinced. He replied boldly, “Brahmins beg only because they don’t have pride. I will not beg before anyone.”
These words, coming from a five-yearold child, shocked his father. Vishrava felt both anger and disappointment. He saw Ravana’s words as arrogance and disobedience. Unable to tolerate such behavior, Vishrava became furious. In his anger, he ordered Ravana to leave the hermitage. He declared that he would not provide food or shelter to a child who refused to follow the traditions of his family.
Despite his young age, Ravana did not cry or argue further. With a strong heart and firm resolve, he left his home immediately. Instead of wandering aimlessly, he went straight to his grandfather, Sage Pulastya. When he reached there, he bowed down and touched his grandfather’s feet. Tears filled his eyes—not out of weakness, but because of the emotional pain he felt. Pulastya was happy to see his grandson, but he quickly noticed the sadness in the child’s eyes. Concerned, he asked gently, “Ravana, my child, what has happened? Why are you upset?”
Ravana explained the entire situation. He told his grandfather how his father had asked him to beg, how he refused, and how he was asked to leave the hermitage because of it. Pulastya listened carefully. Then he asked a simple question, “But why did you refuse? It is common for Brahmins to beg.” Ravana looked straight at him and replied with confidence, “Because I cannot accept that life. My heart does not allow me to bow before others and beg for my survival.” At that moment, Pulastya saw something special in his grandson. He could sense the fire within Ravana—the determination, the selfrespect, and the desire to achieve something greater.
After a moment of silence, Ravana asked his grandfather something that revealed his true ambition. He said, “Grandfather, is there a way by which I can become extremely wealthy? I do not want to depend on anyone, not even Goddess Lakshmi. Please guide me.” Pulastya was impressed. He understood that this child was different. He was not just rebellious—he was driven by a powerful vision.
The sage replied, “Yes, it is possible to become very wealthy. But you cannot receive such knowledge just as my grandson. First, you must become my disciple. You must serve me with full dedication. Only then will I teach you the secret.”
Ravana immediately agreed. He was eager and determined. For him, this was not just about wealth—it was about dignity, independence, and control over his own destiny. Ravana began serving his grandfather with complete devotion. He followed every instruction, performed his duties sincerely, and lived a disciplined life. Years passed. The young boy grew into a strong and focused individual. His commitment never weakened. He never complained or lost hope.
Finally, one day, Pulastya decided that Ravana was ready. He called him and said, “Ravana, I am pleased with your dedication. Now I will guide you toward achieving immense wealth. But this will not be easy. You must perform intense penance and worship Lord Brahma. Only then will you gain the power you seek.”
He then taught Ravana a special mantra, which was necessary to please Lord Brahma. With full determination, Ravana went into the deep forest. There, he began his meditation. He spent years in intense penance, focusing only on his goal. He faced hunger, heat, rain, and many challenges—but he did not stop. His willpower remained strong. At last, Lord Brahma appeared before him.
“Ravana,” said Brahma, “I am pleased with your penance. Open your eyes and ask for a boon.” Ravana bowed respectfully and said, “O Lord, I want to become immensely wealthy. Please give me the secret method by which I can attract Goddess Lakshmi and keep her permanently in my control.”
Brahma listened carefully, but then replied, “I cannot give you that knowledge. Only Lord Shiva knows this secret.” Ravana felt deeply disappointed. After all his effort, he still did not receive what he wanted. However, Brahma continued, “Do not lose hope. I will give you a mantra that will help you please Lord Shiva. Through him, you may achieve your goal.” Brahma then disappeared.
Ravana did not give up. Instead, he started his meditation again with even greater focus. This time, his target was Lord Shiva. Years passed once more. His penance became even more intense. Finally, Lord Shiva appeared before him.
“Ravana,” Shiva said, “I am pleased with your devotion. Ask for any boon.” Without hesitation, Ravana repeated his wish. “Lord, I want the knowledge that can remove poverty forever and grant unlimited wealth.”
But Lord Shiva refused. “I cannot give you this boon. Ask for something else.” Ravana was determined. He said, “If I cannot live the life I desire, then I do not wish to live at all. I would rather die than spend my life begging.” Lord Shiva paused. He was moved by Ravana’s strong determination—but also concerned about his stubbornness.
Finally, Shiva said, “I will give you this knowledge, but you must promise that you will never share it with anyone.” Ravana shocked even Lord Shiva with his answer. He said, “I cannot promise that. If I gain this knowledge, I will share it with others. If I have disciples, I will teach them. If not, I will write it down so future generations can benefit. I do not want anyone to suffer like I did.” He added, “If this condition cannot be changed, then please take my life instead.” Lord Shiva was deeply impressed.
Ravana’s intention was not purely selfish—he wished to remove suffering for others as well. Moved by this honesty and courage, Lord Shiva granted him the secret knowledge. With the divine knowledge he received, Ravana achieved unimaginable wealth. He did not just become rich—he became the richest ruler the world had ever seen. While other kings owned gold ornaments or treasures, Ravana built an entire kingdom—Lanka—made of gold. His palace, his city, and everything around him reected his immense power and prosperity. He lived a life of luxury and comfort, surrounded by riches that no one else could match.
This secret knowledge was known as the Swarna Khappar Sadhana, a powerful spiritual practice that allowed him to attract and maintain wealth. Gurudev is sharing the same knowledge for which Ravana had to struggle so much. This month of Shraavan is very special as it is also accompanied by a solar eclipse. Thus, this planetary alignment makes it very favorable to appease Lord Shiva and eradicate poverty from our lives.
