Salutations to the Goddess who resides in all beings as motherhood.

Among the most revered scriptures of Sanatana Dharma, Durga Saptashati occupies a unique & exalted position. Consisting of 700 verses embedded in the Markandeya Purana, it glorifies the Supreme Divine Mother as the sour c e of c reation, preservation & destruction. More than a religious text, Durga Saptashati is a profound spiritual revelation that teaches humanity about the infinite power, compassion, wisdom, and protection of the Goddess. The Divine Mother is worshipped in countless forss: Durga, Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, MahaSaraswati, Ambika, Chandika, Jagadamba, Bhavani, and many others. Although these forms appear distinct, the Saptashati repeatedly emphasizes that they are manifestations of one Supreme Consciousness.
The scripture presents a powerful philosophical truth: behind every force in the universe exists the Divine Feminine. Every movement of nature, every act of knowledge, every expression of compassion, and every manifestation of strength originate from Her. The Mother Goddess is not merely a deity to be worshipped in temples. She is the cosmic energy that sustains existence. She is the intelligence that guides the mind, the courage that overcomes adversity, the nourishment that sustains life, and the grace that leads seekers toward liberation.
The Durga Saptashati teaches that whenever righteousness declines and evil gains prominence, the Divine Mother manifests to protect devotees and restore cosmic balance. Thus, She is both the loving mother of the universe and its fearless protector. One of the most remarkable teachings of Durga Saptashati is that the Goddess is not subordinate to any deity. Rather, She is the very power through which all Gods perform their jobs.
The scripture portrays the Gods approaching the Divine Mother during times of crisis. When demonic forces become too powerful, the Gods pray to Her because they recognize that all strength ultimately originates from the Supreme Goddess.
She is described as:
The Devi is therefore not merely one divine being among many. She is the eternal cosmic energy that manifests in countless forms for the welfare of creation.

Salutations repeatedly to the Goddess who abides in all beings as divine power. This famous verse teaches that every form of energy in the universe is an expression of the Divine Mother. The vitality within every living creature is Her presence. The universe operates through astonishing order. The movement of planets, the changing seasons, the growth of plants, and the cycles of birth and death all follow divine laws. The Durga Saptashati declares that these forces are governed by the Mother Goddess.
Just as a mother nurture and protects her children, the Divine Mother supports every aspect of creation. Every breath we take, and every beat of the heart occur through Her sustaining power. The ancient sages understood that creation itself is an expression of divine motherhood.

Salutations to the Goddess who exists in all beings as intelligence and wisdom. Knowledge, creativity, and wisdom arise through Her grace. Every scientific discovery, philosophical insight, and spiritual realization reflects Her presence. A major portion of the Durga Saptashati narrates the battles between the Divine Mother and various demons such as Mahishasura, Shumbha, Nishumbha, Dhumralochana, Chanda, Munda, and Raktabija. These stories are not merely historical or mythological narratives.
On a deeper level, the demons symbolize negative tendencies within human beings – ego, anger, greed, jealousy, pride, delusion and ignorance.
The Mother destroys these inner enemies and helps the devotee attain spiritual perfection. Whenever righteousness is threatened, She intervenes. Thus, Durga represents fearless courage and divine justice.

Salutations to the Goddess who resides in all beings as courage, fortitude, and determination.
The ability to face life’s difficulties is a manifestation of Her power. Perhaps the most celebrated episode of Durga Saptashati is the destruction of Mahishasura. Mahishasura represents the arrogance that arises when power is unaccompanied by wisdom. After defeating the Gods and spreading suffering throughout the universe, Mahishasura appears invincible. At that moment, the collective divine energies of all Gods unite and manifest as Goddess Durga.
Mounted upon a lion and armed with celestial weapons, She destroys the demon and restores Dharma. This episode teaches a timeless lesson: No matter how powerful evil may appear, divine truth ultimately prevails.

O Auspicious One among all that is auspicious, O beneficent giver of all goals of life, O refuge of all beings, O Narayani, I bow before You.
This is one of the most beloved prayers to the Divine Mother. One of the distinguishing characteristics of the Divine Mother is Her boundless compassion. A mother forgives countless mistakes of her children.
Similarly, the Devi responds to sincere devotion regardless of a person’s social status, wealth, learning, or past errors. The Saptashati repeatedly emphasizes that even a single heartfelt prayer can invoke Her grace. Her compassion extends equally to all beings because She sees everyone as Her child.

O Goddess, remover of the distress of those who seek refuge, be gracious. O Mother of the entire universe, bestow Your compassion.
The verse highlights Her maternal nature and readiness to protect devotees. The Divine Mother is not only the destroyer of evil but also the giver of abundance and prosperity. As Mahalakshmi, She blesses devotees with wealth, success, good fortune, harmony and well-being.
However, the Saptashati teaches that true prosperity is not merely material wealth. Real abundance includes good character, health, contentment, wisdom & spiritual growth. Thus, the blessings of the Goddess encompass every aspect of life.

Salutations to the Goddess who dwells in all beings as prosperity and abundance. Human civilization advances through knowledge. Every art, science, philosophy, and sacred scripture emerges through Her grace. As Mahasaraswati, the Divine Mother removes ignorance & illuminates the mind. The Saptashati teaches that ignorance is the root cause of suffering. Knowledge reveals the true nature of reality and leads to liberation.

Salutations to the Goddess who is present in all beings as knowledge and learning. One fascinating concept in Durga Saptashati is Yoga Nidra. Before the slaying of Madhu and Kaitabha, Vishnu is shown resting in cosmic sleep. This divine sleep itself is identified as the Goddess. The scripture thus reveals that even cosmic functions depend upon Her power. She governs not only waking consciousness but also the hidden dimensions of existence.

O Narayani, devoted to protecting those who seek refuge, remover of all suffering, I bow to You.
The ultimate blessing granted by the Goddess is not material success but liberation from ignorance. The Saptashati teaches that worldly achievements are temporary. Power fades, wealth changes hands, physical beauty diminishes, fame disappears, only spiritual realization endures.
The Mother guides sincere seekers toward self-knowledge and union with the Divine. In this role, She is not merely a protector but a liberator.
