Pitra Paksha: 2nd September 2020 – 17th September 2020
Once sage Agastya was walking through the forest and came to a tree where he saw many spirits hanging upside down. He felt really strange and asked, “Who are you and why are you hanging this way?” and they answered, “We are your forefathers. Because you have no son, and are also not perfectly self-realized (Brahma Gyani), we have to suffer in this condition. So either you get a son now who can perform shraaddha for us and relieve us from this condition, or we’ll just have to go on like this waiting for you to get full self-realization.”
Sage Agastya was far from being a self-realized sage and was well aware of this fact. Thus sage Agastya decided to help his forefathers and went to a king and begged for his daughter. However, the king replied, “My Lord! I have no children. If I had any daughter, I would be more than obliged to serve you my Lord!”
Listening these words sage Agastya narrated the situation of his ancestors to the king and then by the virtue of his penance called upon all the beauties of the universe into the palace. Soon they got transformed into a baby girl. He gave the girl to the king, saying “Here is your daughter. You raise her up. She’ll grow into an adult in just a week and I will come back to marry her.”
The king was feeling blessed that at least he got the blessing of becoming father and happily took the baby girl from sage Agastya. Just like the sage had mentioned, the girl grew into an adult within one week. Sage Agastya came to pick her and the king offered her to the sage. However, when he had taken her into his hermitage and proposed her about having a child, she said “If you want to live as a householder with me, then you must provide suitable livelihood. I was raised by a king, so this hermitage’s life is not suitable for me. Off course, I am your wife and I will serve you in any case. But if you wish to keep this present standard, then don’t ask me to bear you a son. I will serve you as an ascetic.”
Sage Agastya was moved by her words as he didn’t consider this fact earlier. So, sage Agastya went to beg charity from a king. That king took him to the treasure-house and gave him his account book. “My Lord! I don’t have enough surplus to offer you. You may look into the account book and if you find any profit, I will give it to you.” However to his dismay, upon examining the accounts sage Agastya found that this king had no profit and all his tax collection was spent on the welfare of his people.
So he asked the king if there was any other king who had great wealth, and the king told where Agastya should go. But Agastya said, “You are also in need of extra money, so you just come with me and get some charity from that king too.” So they both went. At this new king’s palace, the same thing happened, that king too had no extra wealth. So Agastya and the two kings went to a third king, and found the same thing there too. So Agastya went with the three kings to a fourth and still the same thing happened.
So Agastya asked the fourth king, “Please tell me who has extra wealth that he is not using.” That king said, “In the forest are two demon brothers named Illvala and Vatapi. They have killed many sages and kings and have looted them. They do this by inviting Travellers into their house for a meal. Illvala cooks Vatapi and serves him to the guest, saying that this is goat flesh from a sacred fire sacrifice. After the guest consumes the food, Illvala calls “Vatapi, come out!”, and Vatapi erupts through the stomach of the guest, killing him. Then these two eat the guest and keep all his wealth. This way they have become extremely rich and they do nothing good with their wealth.”
So Agastya went with the four kings into the forest and approached the house of the two demons. Illvala invited them in to eat. They sat and he served what he said was goat meat. But when he went out for a moment, Agastya said to the four kings, “Don’t eat anything.” When Illvala returned he inquired why the kings hadn’t eaten, and they said “We’re following a fast. Only our Guru eats.”
So Illvala put all the food before Agastya, and he ate it all. Then Agastya, rubbing his belly, said “Vatapi, chiro bhava (Vatapi, get digested)”.
Illvala said “Vatapi come out!” But he did not. He called again and again but to no avail. The kings told him, “This is sage Agastya and He knows all about you, Illvala. He knows you have killed many sages and kings. You should better make a plan to satisfy him, because he is angry and will soon eat you as he has eaten your brother.”
Agastya looked upon Illvala with angry eyes, declaring he would be punished now for his sins. Illvala bowed down and pleaded, “I will give anything if you spare me.” Agastya said, “Then give all your wealth to these kings.”
With his mystic power, sage Agastya went with all the wealth and the four kings to his hermitage located in Himalayas. He called his wife and she saw that the whole valley was filled with gold.
Then Agastya asked the kings for charity which they obliged to. Thus, sage Agastya’s wife consented to have a child and soon they were blessed with a son. As soon as the son appeared from her womb, sage Agastya left his wife and returned to the life of an ascetic.
The above story explains the importance of serving the ancestors. Even, sage Agastya, who was sitting at such high altitude went ahead and lived a householder’s life just to appease his ancestors. He could have thought to work in the direction of attaining nirvana, however, on the second hand, he felt it is his duty to serve his ancestors first and relieve them from their sufferings. Thus, it is a must for every householder to perform Shraddha for their ancestors and this sadhana is an important step in this direction.
One needs five Someshwar Rudraksha, fifteen Laghu Nariyal, snake made of silver and Rudraksha rosary. One also needs rice grains, black sesame seeds, saffron, white cloth, milk, ghee, honey and Tusli leaves for the sadhana. This sadhana can be performed during the entire year however, it is recommended to perform this sadhana any day of the Pirta Paksha i.e. from 2st September to 17th September this year for best results. If done during these days, one just need to perform the procedure once only. On the remaining days, one just needs to do mantra chanting after lighting lamp and incense stick.
Get up early on the very first day of Pitra Paksha and take a bath. Get into fresh white clothes. Cover a wooden plank with a white cloth. Make five mounds with black sesame seeds and place one Someshwar Rudraksha on each of these mounds. Now encircle these Rudraksha with a black ink. Next make fifteen mounds of rice in front of the sesame mounds and place one Laghu Nariyal on each of the mounds. Light a ghee lamp and place the silver snake below your mat. This safeguards a person from any evil spirits. Next offer some sindur onto the Rudraksha.
Next come out of your worship room and offer some water from a copper tumbler to your ancestors facing East. This is a message to the ancestor that their offspring is inviting them. Chant the following mantra while offering the water.
Om Lam Namah
Om Vam Namah
Om Ram Namah
Om Yam Namah
Now without looking anywhere around, directly go into your worship place and chant the below mantra 5 times. Offer small amount of sesame seed mixed with ghee onto the Someshwar Rudrakshas while chanting the below mantra.
SwaShareeram Tejomayam Punyaatmakam PurushaarthaSadhanam,
PirareshwaraAraddhanYogam Dhyaatvaa Tasmin Shareerah,
Sarvaatmakam Sarvagyam SarvaShaktiSamanvitam Pitareshvaraamaya
Aanand Swarup Bhaavayeta.
Praying the above mantra with pious heart ensures that the ancestors come and reside at sadhak’s place. Next request them to help you in each and every aspect of life. One should not be reluctant in asking for any type of favors because they are your ancestors. Next make a mark similar to crescent form of moon around the Laghu Nariyals. This sign is like Lakshman Rekha which permanently makes the ancestors stay in your home and bless you forever. Then worship the Laghu Nariyals by offering saffron, rice grains, Tulsi leaves etc.
Now take the rosary and chant five rounds of the below mantra with it. One must take care that this rosary must not have been used earlier to chant any other mantra. Care must also be taken to not to use this rosary to chant other mantras in future.
||Om Sarva Pitra Pram Prasnno Bhava Om ||
।। ऊॅं सर्व पितृ प्रं प्रसन्नो भव ऊॅं ।।
This is a very powerful mantra. Chanting five rounds of the above mantra completes the sadhana procedure. If possible, the sadhak must try to perform this sadhana during the entire Pirta Paksha duration. On the last day, tie all the sadhana articles in a black cloth and drop it in a river or pond.
This is a very effective sadhana. You will yourself feel the positive outcome of the sadhana after performing it. You will be pleased to see how no quarrel exists in your home, how your workplace has become more rewarding, your children are obeying you, your business has started to expand very quickly, your personality has improved a lot and you are a contented soul now.
