Maha ShivRatri : 21-Feb-2020
A Day To Obtain What all one wishes in life
As the bearer of the sacred river Ganges, He is known as Ganagadhar. Because of His matted hair, He is dearly called as Jatadhari, by His ascetic followers. As a perfect being He is Siddheshwar. With His Trident in His hands, He became popular as heroic and fearless Trisuladhari.
Once Goddess Parvati pleased Lord Shiva and Lord Shiva agreed to marry her, she made a wish. The wish was, “I want you to come to my father and ask him for me in alms. Last time you sent Brahma to Daksha to do the same, and so this time, I want it to be you”.
As well known, the innocent Lord Shiva is unknown of the wordly ways. Thus, he had a unique method of asking to Mother Parvati’s parents to let her marry him. Listen to that tale, where Shiva took the form of Sunartaka, the Dancer. A dancer came with an intention to perform dance in the palace of Himavan. Since Himavan had gone to take bath in Ganga, Mena invited the dancer to perform the dance in the wide court room.
He had a blowing trumpet horn and a rattle drum in his hands. Draped in red dhoti, he danced elegantly in the room, attracting praises of all ministers and the queen Mena herself. He sang melodious songs and blew his horn merrily. Even Mother Parvati heard the song while resting in her room and was filled with ecstasy. She wondered why the voice sounded so familiar. She went into slumber by the smooth melodious voice of dancer. Shiva came in her dreams.
“Ask for anything. Don’t hesitate. Your dance and song has amplified my happiness on the return of my daughter after a long penance” said Mena.
“Give me your daughter in marriage” said the dancer.
These words were a thunderclap to Mena. She screamed and scolded the dancer. But to her horror, the dancer was dancing and singing gleefully. When Himavan came back, he ordered his soldiers to throw out the dancer on knowing his demand. The soldiers caught him but were unable to move him by an inch. Himavan was agitated. He glared at the dancer and paced towards him.
But he stopped in the mid-way. To his astonishment, the dancer had transformed into four armed Lord Vishnu , wearing a garland made of fragrant flowers.
Himavan was stunned. He vividly remembered that it was the same garland that he had offered to Vishnu while worshipping him after having taken bath in Ganga. He wondered how had the same garland appeared on the dancer who had suddenly transformed into Vishnu?
As he blinked, the dancer had now transformed into four faced Brahma. Himavan was amazed. He looked around and concluded, owing to normal looking faces that he was the only one who was watching these transformations of the dancer. The dancer further changed into Indra, Agni, Soma, etc.
And at last, he saw Shiva standing in front of himself. He was not alone. Mother Parvati was also standing beside him, both of them smiling at Himavan.
As Himavan could conclude what was happening, the two forms of Shiva and Mother Parvati merged into one and dissolved into a formless entity, oozing divine waves around Himavan.
A loud crack sound brought Himavan to present. He paced back and sinked on his throne. Magically, the dancer had vanished.
When Mena looked at him with worried expression, he waved at her and said “Oh Mena. Worry not. He was Shiva himself, who had come here to ask for Goddess Parvati’s hand in marriage. He was playing his divine sport with us”. Mena was relieved and much joyful on listening this. Together, the couple reached the temple of Shiva and offered him prayers.
Shiva smiled at Kailasha and muttered “As per Parvati’s wish, I have gone and asked for her hand from her father”.
When Goddess Parvati came to know about it, she tilted her head to one side and said to herself “He still doesn’t know the ways of culture, about how a bridegroom comes to talk about marriage”.Thinking so, she smiled at Lord Shiva’s innocent attempt to fulfill her wish of visiting Himavan to ask for her hand in marriage.
When Kartikeya, their first child, was born, he was given to the Kritikas (some women from Kritika place). This was done because Shiva believed that by growing in that place, he would imbibe skills that would help in warfare later. After coming to Kailasha, he immediately went to train to fight Tarakasura, one of the strongest daemons in the Hindu mythology. Shortly after killing him, he was sent to another kingdom for its protection. So Parvati was not given much opportunities to enjoy the company of her son.
Similar things happened with AshokaSundari. She was shortly motivated to go for meditation. So Parvati was very upset because her family was never together. Menavati, her mother, tells her that in order to take care of this, Shiva himself should spend more time at home. So now the problem was how to make this happen. Lord Narad came to the rescue and told Mother Parvati that when Sachi, the wife of Indra, was having similar problem, she donated Indra to Narad. But Narad gave Indra back to her as he couldn’t see any advantage of keeping him. Since then Indra used to spend most of the time at home. So both Menavati and Narad convince Mother Parvati to adopt a similar method. Narad tells Mother Parvati that she could donate Shiv to the 4 Brahma sons – Sanaka, Sanatana, Sanandana and Sanatkumara.
The donation actually happened, but contrary to their expectation, the Brahma sons did not give Shiv back. Then there was a massive uproar everywhere as Shiva was no longer taking care of the worldly affairs – he was now a “property” of the Brahma sons and had to obey their orders. So Mother Parvati assumes a form of an old lady and tries to show them how the world would get devastated if Shiva was not freed. They were convinced and let go of Shiva.
Once Lord Vishnu was worshiping Lord Shiva. He was reciting Lord Shiva’s 1000 names one after another and with each name he was offering him a flower. Lord Shiva was impressed with such devotion but wanted to check for his true devotion and so decided to test him. Lord Shiva with his power’s removes one flower from the 1000 flower’s that Lord Vishnu had. Lord Vishnu had no clue about this. When Lord Vishnu said the 1000th name,he was surprised to see that he was short of one flower. He decided to do something. He took out one of his eyes and offered it to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva was very impressed with Lord Vishnu’s true devotion. Lord Shiva appeared in front of Lord Vishnu and said to him that he was worthy of something special. Pleased with the act, Lord Shiva gave Lord Vishnu the Sudarshan Chakra.
Once a hunter while chasing a deer wandered into a dense forest and found himself on the banks of river Kolidum when he heard the growl of a tiger. To protect himself from the beast he climbed up a tree nearby. The tiger pitched itself on the ground below the tree fostering no intention to leave. The hunter stayed up in the tree all night and to keep himself from falling asleep, he gently plucked one leaf after another from the tree and threw it down.
Under the tree was a Shiva Linga and the tree blessedly turned out to be a bilva tree. Unknowingly the man had pleased the deity with bilva leaves. At sunrise, the hunter looked down to find the tiger gone, and in its place stood Lord Shiva. He prostrated before the Lord and attained salvation from the cycle of birth and death.
Sanathkumara, one of the sons of Brahma, was a great sage. He realized his Athmic Self and was always immersed in it. One day, very unusually, he went to sleep and had a dream. In the dream, he saw himself as a warrior fighting against demons. That day, Lord Shiva appeared before him and offered him boons. Sanathkumara smiled and said, “I do not want anything, as I am everything.” Lord Shiva was very happy to witness the extent of his knowledge.
Then Sanathkumara asked Lord Shiva, “If You want a boon, I will grant it.” Lord Shiva didn’t show any displeasure hearing such words rather He was overjoyed. His joy knew no bounds and He honored Sanathkumara by asking a boon. He asked “Will you be born as my son?” Sanathkumara gladly accepted. And thus Sanathkumara was born as Kartikeya, the son of Lord Shiva.
