Lunar Eclipse: 5th June
Moon is considered to be the most influential planet in the solar system. It is because it governs the mind and emotions, behavior, mood, instincts, emotions and feelings. Moon is the inner self, while Sun is how the world sees us. Moon’s influence makes the native compassionate, generous, sensitive, creative and imaginative. It also relates to fertility and womanhood.
Moon is the most important planet in Vedic Astrology. So much so, that a person’s birth star is determined by the nakshatra in which moon is placed. All the worships performed on the behalf of a person require the knowledge of this birth star. A person’s rashi (Moon sign) is nothing but the zodiac where Moon is placed at the time of birth. Even the results of the movement of different planets in Gochar is seen from their momentary placement with respect to the Moon and no other planet. Why is this so?
There are many reasons for its overwhelming importance in Vedic Astrology. In Vedic Astrology, Moon represents our mind and Sun represents our soul. If Sun is the ‘soul’, Moon is the ‘organism’. One may have health, wealth, a good family, and yet one may be dissatisfied; whereas another person with much less may be happier. It is because of the placement and innate strength of the Moon in the horoscope. That is why Sun is called the King and Moon the Queen. The light of the Sun, the basic life force of our body, shines on the Moon (our mind) thus activating and animating it. Moon is the reservoir of our karmas which causes our emotional disposition or the way we emotionally react to our environment. It is our feelings, desires, hopes, dreams, home, homeland, mother, early education, etc. It is the Moon which best represents our personality along with the ascendant and the Sun. That is why it is given so much importance in the Vedic Astrology.
Everything that we experience, is experienced through the medium of the Moon, our mind. It is like the mirror in which all the sense perceptions are reflected and understood, and then the corresponding emotions are produced based on the interpretation of those experiences as good or bad, pleasant or unpleasant etc. If the mirror is clean, then the reflections in this mirror are not distorted and we understand the reality correctly. Such a mind reflects wisdom. But if the mirror is dirty or crooked, in other words, then the reflections may be very blurred, distorted and ugly. Such a mind reflects ignorance, which is considered as the root cause of the spirit’s bondage to matter in the ancient Indian traditional thought. Such ignorant or distorted reflections produce negative emotions like fear, jealousy, anger, bitterness, unfortunate feeling, pride, delusions etc.
All the other planets reflect their light on this Moon only. It is also evident from the placement of the planets in the sky. Light from all the planets needs to pass through or get reflected by the Moon (mind) on their way before they can reach the native who lives here on Earth, which represents his body or the lagna (ascendant) in the horoscope. Earth is not shown in the horoscope separately because the native is situated on Earth only, and his body itself is composed of the food that he eats off the Earth!! So, by its very location in the sky as the nearest heavenly body to the Earth, the Moon’s influence on the native combines along with it, the influence of all the other planets.
Thus, our mind (the Moon in astrology) is the playground of the combined effect of all the other planets in the sky. That is the main reason in my view for the excessive importance given to Moon in Vedic Astrology.
Let us look at what I mean in much greater detail. The jeevatma (the incarnating soul) has to take birth on Earth because of its undischarged karmas. The physical body that it takes up is symbolized by the ascendant or the lagna in the horoscope. In the Kalpurush horoscope, the lagna or ascendant is Aries, which is ruled by Mars. Mars is also the ruler of Scorpio, or the eighth house, the house of death in the Kalpurush horoscope. This means that the planet Mars stands for total identification with the body and hence is the main reason for it being assigned the rulership of the house of birth as well as death in the Kalpurush horoscope. Mars (physical life and its pleasures) is the main reason for the soul having to experience the eternal cycle of the birth-death process in the first and the eighth houses respectively. The reflection of the light from Mars through Moon (the mind) causes our mind (Moon) to identify completely with our bodies, the physicality of our planet and all the physical pleasures that it affords us.
The next planet that we need to consider in the Kaalpurush horoscope is the Venus, being the lord of Taurus, the second house, the house of oral enjoyment (eating and drinking pleasures) and Libra, the seventh house, the house of sexual enjoyment as well as friendship. This planet also heavily colours the Moon (the mind) through desire for carnal and emotional pleasures by its reflection. This becomes the basis for deep emotional and even physical attachments to our friends and spouse. Attachments were considered as deadly to the prospects of Self-realization for the soul. That is probably why the ancient rishis (enlightened seers) classified second and seventh houses as maraka houses (houses that bring death or death like suffering to the native in their periods). It is the desire and attachments (second and seventh house) or lust (eighth house) which cause the soul (Sun) to incarnate on the dense earthly plane and suffer the experience of death ultimately.
The next planet is the Mercury, which rules the third house of Gemini and the sixth house of Virgo in the Kaalpurush horoscope. This is the planet which bestows the benefit of the reasoning power of the intellect on our mind (the Moon). Using the Mercury’s intelligence our mind (Moon) is able to get what it desires or lusts for. Too much lust brings disease (sixth house of Kaalpurush horoscope)!
In that process of chasing, getting and satisfying its desires, our mind becomes loaded with more and more karma which makes the soul heavier and heavier. All these karmas will need to be shed by the soul in its future births on Earth for it to be liberated. This is the lesson that the Moon (our mind), the lord of the fourth house in the Kaalpurush horoscope, needs to learn.
More it gains proficiency in dealing with the terrain on Earth, more proud the jeeva (the embodied person) becomes. This pride is the sign of Leo, the fifth house in the Kaalpurush horoscope, ruled by Sun (this is the reflection of the Sun as the soul, on the mirror of the Mind or Moon, which is experienced as pride or ego).
Jupiter, the lord of the Sagittarius, ninth house of spiritual wisdom and Pisces, twelfth house of liberation or ‘moksh’ in the Kaalpurush horoscope bestows the spiritual illumination to the Moon. It teaches the mind to reduce and ultimately eliminate its desires for the earthy things and to satisfy its hidden hunger for God or the Self, which alone can liberate it from the misery of repeated births and deaths (liberation is signified by the sign Pisces, the twelfth house of the Kaalpurush horoscope in its highest vibration).
Saturn, the lord of Capricorn, the tenth house, and Aquarius, the eleventh house in the Kaalpurush horoscope, helps the mind by instilling in it the self-discipline of asceticism, and virtues of karma yoga through selfless service to society (which the tenth and the eleventh houses represent in their highest sense) in order to gain the required purity of the mind for spiritual illumination or enlightenment.
This completes the entire cycle of the Moon from darkness (new Moon) to enlightenment (full Moon). From a completely dirty mirror or mind in Aries, Taurus, Libra, Scorpio etc., the Moon becomes spotlessly clean and shining full Moon after the spiritual illumination in the divinely purifying waters of the Revati nakshatra in Pisces, after being initiated and trained by the Sadguru (Jupiter), and guided, purified and cooked by the disciplining fire of tapas or asceticism (Saturn).
If we look at the placement of the Moon in the chart, all the conjunctions and aspects that it receives, the planets sitting with Moon or in the previous or the next sign to it, the placement and strength of its nearby planets etc., it tells us about the basic nature of the native. The attitude, whether it is optimistic or pessimistic; happiness level; resilience and emotional stability in the face of the changing environment; relationship with mother and other elderly ladies in the life; how trustworthy the native is, or the quality of character; connection with family members, immediate family and mother land and also about health, wealth and prosperity.
It is the Moon or the mind only that needs to be enlightened by becoming a full moon. Just as the moon changes shape and size every day, our moods also change very frequently. The whole purpose of human life is to be happy, and Moon is the planet responsible for how we feel in general.
If the Moon is the lord of a kendra and is placed in a kendra, and having favorable Jupiter, Mercury and Venus, it gives the native a very pleasant and resilient nature along with health, wealth and luck. Women play a great role in his success.
The placement of Jupiter with respect to Moon is very important because Jupiter represents higher and spiritual knowledge, and Moon is the mind. A well placed Jupiter in a kendra from Moon forms the famous Gaj Kesari Yog, one of the most auspicious Raja Yogas in astrology. This yoga makes a native educated, happy, kind, popular among friends and relatives, lucky and wise. Jupiter’s protection is always available to the native throughout life. Jupiter affected Moon is also a very auspicious indication signifying Jupiter’s benign influence on the native. It ensures good education, character, divine protection and luck as well as spiritual progress in life unless adversely affected by other malefic planets.
Of course, for more detailed results of the Moon’s placement in a specific chart, many more things need to be seen. However, we can now see why Moon is considered so important in the Vedic Astrology. Every planet is able to influence us only by influencing our mind or Moon first. Only a happy and peaceful Moon can allow us to have a happy and peaceful life. A powerful Moon along with Jupiter can negate many adverse influenced coming from the other planets.

Lord Ganpati is the possessor of all the knowledge, wisdom, intelligence and wit. Performing sadhana of Lord Ganpati during Lunar Eclipse can thus help a person gain all the above aspects in life. Who wouldn’t love, adore, revere and worship such a deity, for He takes away all of our troubles, problems, pains, afflictions and even poverty in life? There may exist a hundred different sects across all over India, yet when it comes to launching some venture all differences disappear as they choose first and foremost to supplicate to the dear Elephant-God, Lord Ganesh for His divine grace that would ensure success and fulfilment. No wonder an ancient text states –
Abheepsitaarth Siddharyartham Poojito Sah Suraasureih,
Sarva Vighna Harastasmei Gannaadhipataye Namah.
The Lord is the fulfiller of all the wishes. His grace removes all obstacles and impediments. He is the Divine Purveyor of true knowledge, success in life, prosperity and all the spiritual powers. Thus all Gods, humans and even demons bow to Him.
What more He has numerous forms and one may choose to worship any of them – the Lord in a child form having a weakness for laddoos, in a furious form He is a terror for the enemies, in a pleasant form He is ready to bestow all boons of life and so on.
Besides these many forms, there are a variety of rituals some based on Mantra, some on Strotas and still some on Tantra. Though their efficaciousness cannot be doubted, yet complex and lengthy process makes them difficult. if not impossible, for a common man to accomplish.
However there is a form of Lord that assimilates all benefits of His other forms and this sadhana of His is so simple that even a child could achieve success in it effortlessly. This one day ritual would consume not more half hour yet manifest amazing results could virtually transform one’s life and ring in a new phase of prosperity, affluence and success.
Maha Ganpati Sadhana is the wonderful ritual whose chief boon is riddance from generations of poverty. For a middle class family person this could be the golden opportunity of striking it rich, that he or she might have been looking for. To those acquainted with religious rituals this should not come as a surprise, for Ganpati worship has always formed an important part of Lakshmi Sadhana.
Actually Lord Ganpati’s blessings are capable of bestowing both Bhog (worldly pleasues) and Moksh (spiritual attainments) on an individual. Sadhana of Mahaganpati aims at neutralising all sins and evils of one’s past lives so as to make one eligible for enjoying wealth, prosperity and all pleasures in life to the fullest, thus paving the way for total fulfilment and ultimately spiritual elevation.
