What is the cause of our sufferings?
All of us wish to become successful in life, all of us work so hard to make our life more meaningful, all of us wish to live a life of peace and harmony. However most of us are even unable to fulfill the daily needs, forget about the luxuries of life. What is the reason that even after all the hardships, even after our pious nature we have to continuously face defeat in life? What is it that can make us feel happy and content in life? What can a person do to achieve success in life? We all wonder what is the cause of our failures and above all the means to become successful in life.
The answers to all these questions lie in our past several lives. When Bhishma Pitaamaha was made to lie on a bed of arrows, he kept on wondering what wrong did he do for this suffering. He was a capable man and had the power to look back into past seven lives. He couldn’t witness any wrong deed in his entire past seven lives. One day when Lord Krishna came to meet him, he asked the cause of his misery. Lord Krishna then told him that he was a prince in his previous twenty fourth life and one day while roaming in the garden, he saw a snake. Looking at the snake, he took a spear and threw the snake on a babool tree. The thorns of the tree completely pierced snake’s body and it died entangled there only. It was this sin which appeared before him and pierced his body similarly.
This incident teaches us that whatever we go through, whether good or bad, is the cause of our past deeds. The nature evens out what all we did in any of our past lives. The ill deeds that we did, the sins we committed are the real reasons for all the problems we face in our life. Now most of us are not even aware of what sins we have committed in our present life only, forget about the past. The question that arises now is how to get rid of all these sins and live a harmonious life.
Only a SadGuru can help His disciples to get them rid of all their sins. He is capable enough to look into the past and see what all sins His disciples have committed in their past several lives and what are the means by which these sins can be evened. This can be done by chanting mantras related to various Gods and Goddesses, performing sadhanas etc. However all these means are time consuming and how many of us can claim that our mantra chanting is free of any imperfections, how many of us can be certain of achieving success in sadhanas? Whereas a SadGuru wishes to help His disciples to get free of all the sins as soon as possible because then only can he traverse on the path of enlightenment or Brahmagyana. Only a SadGuru can understand that a hungry man first needs food rather than any enlightenment. On the request of several disciples and looking at the current pathetic condition of human beings, SadGurudev Ji made up His mind to help all His disciples to get rid of their sins and thus enable them to fulfill their dreams. SadGurudev Ji selected one of the most highly ranked pilgrimages of Hindus, Rameshwaram, as it is one of the most pious places on this earth. Before proceeding further to the rituals, rules and regulations of attending this shivir, let us first understand the worth of this place.
As mentioned in the previous issue, it was the place where Lord Ram reached in the search of his wife Sita. Looking at the ocean in front of Him, he was left perplexed as to how he should proceed further and reach Lanka, the place where His wife was kept as a captive. Lord Ram first prayed to Lord Ganapati for attaining success in His endeavors. He also performed holy sacrifice in fire to make all the planets favorable for Him. Lord Ram was one of the greatest devotees of Lord Shiva too. He started to worship the Lord to seek His guidance. The Lord appeared before Him and asked the reason for His despair. Lord Ram told Lord Shiva the reason for His anxiety and Lord Shiva granted Him a boon by which Lord Ram’s army would be able to create a bridge connecting Rameshwaram and Lanka. Lord Ram was pleased by this and asked His army to create the bridge. This very bridge is known as Ram Setu or Adam’s Bridge crossing which Lord Ram and His army reached Lanka.
After defeating the demon king, Ravana, Ram returned back to Rameshwaram. Reaching on the shores of Rameshwaram, Ram met various great Sages for their blessings. Ravana was the grandson of Lord Brahma and thus was a Brahmin. Hence Lord Rama having killed Ravan attracted the sin of Brahma hatya (i.e. killing a Brahmin). The Sages thus advised Lord Ram to worship Lord Shiva to get rid of this sin as He alone can eradicate such a sin. Lord Ram worshiped Lord Shiva there along with His wife Devi sita and was thus freed from the sin of killing a Brahmin.
Considering these two events, we can surely conclude that this holy place not only helps one to get rid of his most unforgivable sins, one can also fulfill one’s wishes in this very place. However, the catch here is that one should be free from all their sins to get success in any sadhana or mantra chanting. So, SadGurudev Ji has decided to grant both these boons to His beloved disciples. He would be granting Sakshi Vinaayaka Ganpati Diksha and Kaal Bhairav Shaktipaat Diksha in this shivir. Along with these, worship of Lord Shiva in the form of Parad Shiva Lingam would also be performed. There would be an arrangement of Yagya (holy sacrifice in fire) also.
Let us understand the importance of all these activities planned by SadGuruDev Ji first. Lord Ganpati is the God who grants wishes to all His devotees and fulfill their desires. Thus attaining diksha related to Lord Ganpati makes a person capable enough to fulfill his desire. Lord Kaal Bhairav is the one who helps His devotees get free of all the fears, He helps one get rid of all the black magic and thus helps a person to live a life free of all the tensions. Lord Shiva, as mentioned earlier, would be worshiped to help us get rid of all the sins that we have committed in our present as well as past several lives. Performing the holy sacrifice will help us to make all the planets favorable for us.
If one looks carefully at all the rituals mentioned above and join all the dots, a clear image will pop out showing that Gurudev Ji is inclined to make His disciples perform all the rituals that were performed by Lord Ram on His daunting task to defeat the demon Ravana and bring back Goddess Sita.
Let us also take a look at the other aspects of Rameshwaram. As mentioned in the last issue also, it is among the four most holy pilgrimages of Hindus. Sankaracharya, who was himself an incarnation of Lord Shiva, gave this place such high designation. Of all the four Dhams of Hindus, Rameshwaram is the only one which is situated in the Southern part of India. This temple has been developed in phases over past thousand years and is a masterpiece of arts and architecture of India. Anyone of us who has even minimal interest in history must be aware of it. The town has been changed many hands; main amongst them were Cholas, Jaffna Kingdom, Allaudin Khilji, Pandya Dynasty, Vijayanagara Empire, followed by some other rulers who ruled the town for a very short while before British East India Company directly took over it and made it a part of Madras Presidency. The Rama Setu bridge is some 30 Km long and was supposed to be passable on foot till 15th century after which a storm deepened the channel. Some of the major attractions of this place are as mentioned below.
‘Ramanathaswamy’ literally means ‘the Master of Rama’ which refers to Lord Shiva, which the temple is all about. There are two ‘lingam’ inside the temple; ‘Ramalingam’ by Devi Sita built by sand and ‘Viswalingam’ brought by Lord Hanuman from Kailasha (abode of Lord Shiva) and installed by Lord Rama. Temple tanks, hall of 1000 pillars, and several other shrines in the temple attract millions of pilgrims every year.
The southernmost tip of Rameshwaram is knownas Dhanushkodi, where Kothandaramaswamy temple is located. The place was often ruined by cyclones but never displaced a single stone of the temple and of faith, thus. The place is where Vibhishana, brother of Ravana surrendered to Lord Rama. Enchanting location makes this a place to visit .
Lord Hanuman, Lord Adivaraha, Lord Narasimha, Lord Hayagriva and Lord Garuda are the five faces that were revealed by Lord Hanuman at the sacred site, where the present day temple stands. Another attraction of the temple is floating stone used for building temporary Sethu Bandhanam to reach Lanka.
There are 22 tirthams whose water is considered to be very pious. It is mandatory to have a bath with the water of these tirthams prior to paying a visit to the Rameshwaram temple. Apart from these 22, there are several tirthams around the temple. A few among them are mentioned here.
Agni Tirtham – This place is famous for its curative properties.
Ram Tirtham (Gandamadana)- worshipped by many communities of south India.
Lakshman Tirtham – Built inside Rameshwaram to give the brother of the Lord the place he rightly deserved helping his brother in the holy war against Ravana.
Jatayu Tirtham – Commemorates the memory of Eagle God who assisted Lord Rama in his fight for Devi Sita.
Kaveri and Jada Tirtham – This place is meant to worship for God Kapardikeshwar and a Peepal tree representing all the deities.
