For every person the definition of joy is different. Everything in this is taught by our family and society and it is on this basis that we define joy in life. From one generation to the other the thoughts are carried forward. Some think joy is in having a beautiful home, for others eating good food is most joyous, someone else feels joyful by wearing nice and expensive clothes and to some joy lies in jewelry. Some think true joy is in having a beautiful life partner and children. Some think that being good in the eyes of others is the real joy of life. But these definitions are not your own. You have adopted a view point which you have been taught by this world, by your parents and by your society.
And those who taught you this, those who gave this knowledge to you, knew what they were doing. They wanted to limit your thoughts to a restricted area so that you will not become independent in your life but rather to follow their preaching as were told to you. A family man cannot think of a change in his life because right from his childhood he has been told that this is the only way of life. Once, a meeting took place and very eloquent high sounding speeches were made. All pledged that they would not back out even if the police fired at them.
But the next day hardly a fourth of the original crowd gathered. I asked them- Just yesterday everyone had pledged so solemnly. Why have all not turned up? One of them who was just about to sneak away said- I am a family man. If something happens to me what would happen to my children? Who will look after my family? It means being a family man is being a handicap. It restricts one’s thoughts and actions. A family man becomes self centered. He avoids trouble and fights even at the cost of bearing with injustice.
He says – I am courageous, but my family responsibilities forces me to stay away from trouble! What is true joy or Anand? If one feels an inner satisfaction and happiness on doing something then one is experiencing true joy. True joy comes from within and not because of a praise by some other person. How many times have you felt like taking off your clothes and getting soaked in rain? But the very next moment you curb your thoughts, worry about what people might think about you. And all you do is silently watch through your windows the rain pouring on to the earth. You are forced to kill your feelings and on daily basis you crush so many thoughts to death.
And because you stop the joy from within to pour forth, you start to seek it outside. I receive many letters daily saying- Gurudev, please do not go back to Siddhashram yet. We still need you. I say to them- Fine I shall stay back now. But when I finally leave will you go with me? If you wish to go with me then you shall have to make efforts right from this moment. You shall have to put all you have at stake to go with me. One of the disciples said- Gurudev, let me build a house for my children first then I will do as you say. Some other disciple said- Let me marry off my daughter then I shall be free of all tension. Then you can take me anywhere. Right now I have lots of things to do in my life. You are all like mere puppets and you dream of going with me!
If you wish to go with me you shall have to change your outlook. You shall have to banish the thoughts which are there in your mind. You shall have to achieve the state of thoughtless mind. Only then shall you be able to experience true joy in life. Only then shall you be able to go where I lead you. Only then shall I be convinced that this disciple is finally ready and is no longer a coward!
I shall know then that this disciple has realized his power, his goal, the source of true joy and now he can be given some important work to do. Now great thoughts can be put in his mind which shall touch his heart rather than create a turmoil in his mind. To sow the seed of joy!
I have kept sowing seeds of true joy in the hearts of my disciples in my whole life . Many tried to assess the worth of these seeds. Some thought that through these seeds they would be able to fulfil all their hoes sky high, they went on wishing for more and more.
Very few realized that the seeds that Gurudev has given us are meant to be sown in the heart. They realized that the divine experiences which they have had through the Guru are to be treasured and enjoyed. They realized that real aim of life is not to wander about meaninglessly. They realized that true joy is in the words of Gurudev and in his thoughts. These disciples have assumed big duties in life and always remain immersed in an ocean of joy.
They work selflessly. They are fully devoted and they never think they are giving or taking anything. It is still not too late for you people. A feeling of purity and sacredness has started to emerge from within. The society had filled you with the garbage of useless wishes, hopes, thoughts and feelings. In such a corrupted medium the seeds of love cannot germinate. First you have to get ride of all these garbage that you have accumulated over all these years of your meaningless life. You have to create a state of pure and thoughtless mind. When this happens, all paths to the highest state shall by themselves open up before you.
I gift you dreams!
Dear disciples! I do not want you all to experience the pain that I have gone through in my life. I wish to give you joy that you can experience and cherish in your life. I wish you to have spiritual experiences that I have had. I wish these experiences to be permanently etched up on your hearts. I wish that you could gift these experiences to others. I am not asking you to leave your family life.
I wish to change your outlook towards life so that your thoughts could be concentrated on the goal of attaining the true form of joy in your life. I wish you feel and laugh heartily. I wish a joyous smile shall play on your lips. I wish you enjoy each moment of life. I wish that you know what is the essence of life. I wish you lead a life according to your own wishes. Only then shall my efforts bear fruit.
I am not asking you to break the rules of society or become completely overwhelmed by them. All I wish is that you should make each moment of this life, gifted by the Lord, worthwhile. I wish that you do not spend your life only in tasks which might well bring only material comforts but no joy. We do not have to prepare a caravan or set out on a long journey. We have to travel inwards. In this journey there shall be moments which shall make you thoughtless and these moments shall be most fruitful. When you shall be sharing this joy with others you shall have to face arguments and criticism. People will try to hurt you but do not get perturbed. When you have decided at heart and not with your mind then just go on traveling on this path singing, laughing, smiling, dancing like Meera.
Still a lot to be done!!!
The work that we have started has yet to expand a lot. Many people will come and join this movement. Meditation and Yoga centers shall be set up. People shall sit together and have divine experiences.
This process has already begun. All are devoted to this task. But there sure are very few disciples who are fully devoted and who understand their responsibilities. I am asking you to look into your heart and soul and not in your mind, then you shall see that I am eagerly waiting to take you in my arms. One can attain such a divine level by conscious efforts and by the grace of Gurudev only.
And it is the point where Shishyam Poornam Diksha comes into picture. This diksha is a must for each and every individual who wishes to attain the true joy of life, who wishes to not only get a glimpse of revered SadGurudev but rather wants to assimilate Gurudev in the heart. A person needs to get initiated with this diksha and follow the procedure mentioned by Gurudev to attain such a level. Gurudev can sow a seed in our heart. It is our responsibility to give proper nutrition to this seed so that it may grow up to a big tree under which hundereds and thousands of disciple can sit under the shade of this tree. It is truly our fortune that we are blessed with such a Guru in life.
Guru is not a physical form. Guru is energy, the medium through which the great knowledge flows in to the disciple. If one considers the disciple to be an ice-cold stone and knowledge to be boiling hot water, then the Guru pours this hot water onto the cold stone gradually, drop by drop, until the stone cracks with the heat. Guru takes full responsibility of the disciple, monitors him every second. Guru literally carries the disciple on to the journey of evolution. He is not someone who does sweet talk or makes arbitrary promises to gain your support. A Guru needs nothing from you; it is the disciple who needs Him. He is just like a mirror that will shows our true self and helps to elevate ourselves, provided we really want to rise in life.
The first sign of a Guru is detachment. As soon as a person comes in the proximity of the Guru, the person starts experiencing detachment from unworthy materialistic things – an indication that we are in the right place. Rudryamala, describing the qualities of a Guru, mentions that He has no drawbacks, is free of vices, with impeccable character, follows dharma and spiritual practices and is devoted to His Guru.
A Guru follows what He talks. He possesses phenomenal energy, radiance and attraction. A disciple experiences this glow and attraction in the Guru’s company and feels divine.
