He approached an old disciple, Bhai Gurdas, who was offering the holy food and requested him to give him the holy food. However, Bhai Gurdas was short tempered and used to use harsh words. Even after getting feedbacks several times from Guru TegBahadur Ji to speak softly and sweetly with others, there was hardly any change in his behaviour. Thus, out of his instincts, he harshly instructed the farmer to go behind and wait for his turn. The farmer tried to explain his situation and told him that he was in hurry and must catch his moving cart. He requested Bhai Gurdas to make an exception in his case and give him the holy food.
The farmer’s clothes were dirty, his turban was in a mess and his hair was falling down. Bhai Gurdas got annoyed and shouted, making signs with his right hand: “You dirty man! Why are you jumping like a bear over me? Didn’t I tell you to go back and wait for your turn?” With the movement of his hand, a small portion of the holy food fell on to the ground. The farmer collected that small portion, touched it to his forehead and consumed it with full devotion and ran to catch his cart. Soon, after this incident Bhai Gurdas passed away.
A few years later a juggler with a bear appeared before Guru Govind Singh Ji. He asked Guru Ji to allow him to showcase his skills and entertain everyone around. Guru Govind Singh Ji allowed the juggler for performance in which the bear performed well. Even the juggler himself was surprised to note that the bear was very happy and had satisfied everyone with his show. The son of Bhai Gurdas, Bhai Kirtia, who was now in service of Guru Govind Singh Ji, was also witnessing the performance and was jumping and laughing loudly.
Towards the end of the performance Guru Ji turned to Bhai Kirtia and asked him, “Bhai Kirtia, do you not recognise the bear?” Bhai Kirtia looked confused and said, “Guru Ji, how can I recognize it? It is a bear I have never seen before.” Guru Ji smiled and said, “Bhai Kirita, it is your father, Bhai Gurdas!” Guru Ji then narrated the entire life of Bhai Gurdas and told them how he didn’t give proper attention to the farmer and the farmer cursed him, wishing him to be a bear in his next life. Upon hearing this, everyone fell silent. Everyone was sad and looking at the condition of his father, Bhai Kirita started to cry. All the disciples then requested Guru Govind Singh Ji, “How is it that a man who had served the Guru for his whole life, instead of being liberated was punished in such a terrible way?”
Guru Ji proceeded to explain that Bhai Gurdas had made the mistake of seeing the farmer as a normal person and judging his personal identity, based on his outlook. Guru Ji stressed the importance of love and respect for everyone. One shall never hurt anybody and must serve everyone unconditionally without any personal identity. The disciples petitioned Guru Ji to do something to abolish the curse and liberate the soul of Bhai Gurdas. Moved by the requests of his disciples, Guru Govind Singh Ji asked for some freshly made holy food which was offered to the Guru Ji and was then first given to the bear. The moment the bear ate the prasad, it instantly passed away and was liberated of the curse.
This small incident shows how much important it is to follow the preaching of the Guru. Even after serving Guru for the entire life, if we can’t imbibe His preaching, at the end we will be left empty handed and might have to take a birth in a lower state. There are hundred thousand million species on this earth and one among those species is human being. There are more than seven billion human beings and only few lucky ones get blessed with the presence of Guru in life. We are among those fortunate people who are blessed with Guru in life and 21st April is the day when our beloved Gurudev incarnated on this planet to guide us in life. This is the day to show our love towards Him and to show our gratitude towards Him.
If we put a piece of salt in an empty tumbler, it occupies only a limited space. And, if we put it in a tumbler full of water, it gets dissolved in water and becomes one with it; gives up its limitation, and spreads itself in the water, making it all salty. In other words, we can say that to the extend itself, the piece of salt gives-up its limitation of name and form by getting dissolved in water. Similarly, though the mind is said to be limited, yet the more it gives up its limitation by identifying itself or being one with the unlimited ocean of its realself, the Guru, the more the disciple is able to develop unlimited powers. It means that the mind will then develop power to express itself in unlimited ways. Similarly, if a disciple wants to develop unlimited powers within himself, he will have to identify himself and try to be one with the Absolute, the unlimited source of Power and Energy, the Guru.
And that is the reason why it is a must to assimilate the Guru in one’s heart. That is the reason why disciple must meditate on the form of Guru. That is the only reason why a disciple must worship the holy feet of the Guru. All these are necessary to attain that divinity in life after which even the Yogis have said, “Neti-Neti” i.e. nothing is left beyond that point to be achieved in life. A person can attain such divine sphere in life by means of Guru Hridyasta Staphan Diksha. When the Guru gives this Diksha to the disciple, the Guru Himself comes directly into the heart of the disciple and rest is then up to the disciple as to how he wishes to keep the Guru in his heart. A true disciple then never lets the Guru get out of his heart and doing so he himself becomes united with the Guru and thus, he can assimilate all the powers of the Guru.
What can then remain unfulfilled in life when the Guru, the epicenter of all that is visible or invisible resides within ourselves? Guru is the source of all the Siddhis, chakra activation and even the Gods are desirous to attain human life so that they can uplift themselves under the guidance of such great Gurus. Blessed are we who have the luxury of such a great Guru in our life. It is all up to us whether we want to understand the true meaning of life and attain greatness or to live a life just ordinary.
