On one sunny morning, one of the king’s minister saw that a very beautiful boy on the top of a tree in a forest, attempting to cut the branch on which he was sitting. The minister said to himself, “He’s such a fool! Trying to cut off a branch of a tree while sitting on it.” The ministers laughed at him and told Vararuchi the amusing event he had witnessed. When Vararuchi heard this, a crooked smile appeared on his face, saying, “That stupid boy will be the perfect match for Princess Vidyottma.”
This was the perfect way by which all the dejected ones will be able to avenge their insult. The boy was thus dressed in exquisite clothing and sent to the royal presence after the minister & Vararuchi told them they will get him married to the princess. All that he has to do is remain quiet & don’t utter a word before her. The ministers wanted to conceal his stupidity & thus encouraged the boy to pretend as a sage who is right now engrossed in a Sadhana & can’t talk.
They brought the boy to the princess & explained that the sage could only express him self through gestures. The boy’s attractiveness led Vidyottma to think that he was a brilliant scholar.
The Princess questioned the boy by showing her one finger. The princess Vidyottma asked the boy, “What does this mean?” He quickly displayed his two fingers. The foolish boy thought she is ordering to poke his one eye. He thought if she will poke into my one of the eyes, I will poke her both the eyes. The Princess questioned the pundits over his message.
The scholars responded right away since Vararuchi had given them specialized training. “Our Silent Sage is answering to your question. You asked him, is the universe a single entity, Brahma? Our sage answered that the world is created by both Brahmam & Maya, so two fingers”
The princess was impressed. Then the princess asked next question by showing all her five fingers. She asked the silent sage the answer to her question. The foolish boy thought the princess is trying to slap him! So, he showed her a punch in his reply. Again, the princess asked the Pundits, “What the sage means?”
The pundits replied, “You asked the sage whether the Maya constitutes by only five senses. To this our sage replied by folding all his fingers that controlling all the five senses can lead to ultimate greatness.” Thus impressed, she agreed to marry the boy. Shortly after their marriage, a camel was growling outside their palace. When the princess asked her husband “What is that?”, she expected a wise reply. But Kalidas stammered to say the word camel in Sanskrit (ushtra). The princess understood that Kalidas was no learned man but a fool . Dejected, heartbroken and enraged, she drove Kalidas out of the palace after severely insulting him.
Dejected Kalidas wandered around, till he came to the bank of the river. He was about to give up his life when he suddenly saw some women washing clothes on the edge of the riverbank. He observed that the stones on which the women were washing the clothes, were smooth and rounded, while the other stones were rough and ragged. Suddenly, he thought if stones could be worn through and change their shape by being pounded upon by clothes, then why couldn’t his foolishness change, by being pounded upon by knowledge!
Kalidas thus grew determined to become the wisest and most learned man in the country, and to achieve this end he started his journey through the forest in search of a Guru. After many days of wandering without much food, tired Kalidas was able to find a great yogi, Kalicharan, meditating under a huge Banyan tree. He fell into the holy feet of the Yogi & begged for his blessings.
The yogi accepted Kalidas as his disciple & gave him Guru Mantra. He ordered him to recite the mantra day & night in the temple all alone. Kalidas as per his Guru’s instructions, went into the forest & engrossed himself in Sadhana for many days & nights. One night Goddess appeared before him in Her most fierce form but being ignorant about death Kalidas closed the temple’s main door. The Goddess asked him to open the door, Kalidas said, “O Mother! I will only allow you to enter if you bless me with divine wisdom and intellect.”
The mother blessed Kalidas & after that moment the foolish Kalidas became the greatest scholar of all time.
This story is just a small portrayal of what the Goddess Kali is capable of. It is equally important to understand the true form of mother goddess as a lot of myth exists in the society about her. The word “Kali” comes from the Sanskrit root word Kal which means time. There is nothing that escapes the all-consuming march of time. In Tibetan Buddhism Her counterpart is male with the name Kaal. It is partly correct to say Kali is a Goddess of death but She brings the death of the ego as the illusory self-centered view of reality.
Nowhere in Hinduism, is She seen killing anything but demons nor is She associated specifically with the death of human beings. It is true that both Kali & Shiva are said to inhabit cremation grounds & devotees often go to these places to meditate. This is not to worship death but rather it is to overcome the illusion that I am this body by reinforcing the awareness that the body is a temporary condition. Shiva & Kali are said to inhabit these places because it is our attachment to the body that gives rise to the ego. Shiva & Kali grant liberation by removing the illusion of the ego. This can be very easily underscored by what happens at the cremation grounds.
Of all the forms of Devi, She is the most compassionate because She provides nirvana or liberation to Her children. She is the counterpart of Shiva, the destroyer. They are the destroyers of unreality. The ego sees Mother Kali & trembles with fear because the ego sees in Her its own eventual demise. A person who is attached to his or her ego will never be able to appease Mother Kali. A true Sadhak, who engages in spiritual practice to remove the illusion of the ego, sees Mother Kali in Her most benevolent form – sweet, affectionate, & full of love for Her children.
