Presented below is an extract from SadGurudev’s divine discourse about Kriya Yoga and Samadhi. This extract is provided to help the disciple understand how they can rise spiritually in this world and reach to a state of Samadhi where they can attain real joy in life and become divine.
Even Lahiri Mahashaya had tried to explain Kriya Yoga, Vishuddhanand tried too. But Kriya Yoga is like an infinite ocean whose two banks can’t be brought together. To understand it, one must become infinite. I explain how one can first do Dharana & produce divine resonance within, that can lead one into Dhyan or meditation. If you try just once, you shall find that the resonance thus produced brings mental peace & fulfillment.
One feels that there is something else that one is missing in life. And if the resonance is produced daily for twenty days one realizes what true joy is. True joy cannot be obtained from the material world.
Why does a person try to have more & more possessions?
Why does he earn so much?
Why does he produce children?
Just to get happiness! And in search of happiness & joy, unfortunately he gets involved in activities that cause his downfall. The more he gets involved in such activities, the more he gets caught in the swamp of sorrows.
Giving birth to a child might be pleasurable, but to raise a child is a very tedious job. It is not so easy, there are several problems & tensions involved. And even after so much labor, it is not necessary that the children shall be obedient or caring. And even if they are, one might get comforts from them but cannot get joy.
Comforts are different from joy. A running fan is sure comfortable, but it cannot bring joy. If I am mentally perturbed, all my education, wealth, servants & comforts are useless. If a person is ill, weak or a heart patient, can wealth or property bring joy to him? These cannot generate joy in life. The source of joy is Sachidanand which is called Sat Chit Anand or the true joy of the soul.
Through inner resonance one can easily enter into Dhyan. Dhyan means a state in which one is unaware of even oneself, it is a state of thoughtlessness, it is forgetting of the self, it is losing all the senses.
In the Bible, Jesus said – True essence of life lies in becoming lost in the inner world. Totality of life means forgetting everything around & entering the self. But the followers of Jesus did just the opposite. They believe only in outer display. Mahavir said – Give everything to charity.
But his followers started to hoard more and more of wealth. What the masters said, their followers did just the opposite. This only leads to downfall in life. Even Mohammad has said a very wonderful thing in Kuran. He says – If you want to obtain joy in life then learn from the bees, from the ocean, from the river because they ever keep resonating & are hence filled with true joy.
But we have forgotten how to produce the resonance. All we can do is criticize others. All our texts & our Gurus, Ram, Krishna & saints said that the more one learned how to talk to the self & be lost in the self, more joy one would gain in life. I am using the word joy & not comfort. Comforts you can have by spending money, but you cannot have joy.
And the world of comforts is like a mire caught in which you shall be attracted by mirages of evil pleasures. Such a life has no meaning & aim, for comfort can never bring true joy. If they could, then there would never be problems, tensions & pain in life.
The first step towards attainment of joy in life is Dhyan or meditation. Sat Chit Anand! Anand or joy comes in the end, first one must make the heart & soul pure by adopting truth in life. Only through truth, can we control the mind & only then can we gain joy. If you observe carefully, you shall find that you are not trying to gain joy in life. You are not making any efforts in this direction. All you are trying to get are comforts. Comforts can’t bring satisfaction, joy, patience, sweetness, & love. We have forgotten how to have these in life, for we have forgotten the process of meditation. After Dhyan, the third state is Samadhi.
Rishi Yagyavalkaya has spoken a very beautiful verse about Sadadhi –
Chittam Pradev Vadataam Paripoornna
Roopam Chittam Kripaant Parime Vahitam Sadevam.
Aatmam Pramm Paramataam Parmev Sindhu
Siddashramod Varitam Prathame Samaadhi.
Samadhi means becoming free of attachment to comforts & becoming lost in true joy. Comforts only presents pleasures, comforts bring pleasure, pleasures bring disease & diseases leads to death. Comforts thus lead only to death. We should be able to banish fear of death talk with nature. Plucking a flower & putting it in a buttonhole cannot bring one closure to nature. Rather for that one must learn how to talk to nature. If we sit in the lap of nature & try to forget the self, then one can even learn to control the mind. This control can also be generated through inner resonance.
When the lotus of the heart blossoms, divine elixir starts to shower in one’s life. There is a source of elixir in the navel which makes life possible. As soon as the Sahastrar or the brain is fully activated, divine elixir from it diffuses throughout the body. The deeper one enters into Dhyan, the closer one gets to the soul. When one gets closer to the soul, one gets lost in Samadhi.
It involves three states. In the first one should produce inner resonance. This is done by blowing on a conch shell or chanting the mantra Soham for as long as the breath lasts. Resonance of 32 minutes is said to be complete. Very highly accomplished Yogis can hold breath for 32 minutes. In the beginning, a person can produce resonance for a minute or two. But slowly the duration can increase, one doesn’t have to go to school to learn this process. Just through chanting of Soham, one can change the whole body.
Through this process, Yogis can assume seats in mid-air. When Bharthari wished to accomplish Soham Sadhana, his Guru said – For the sadhana, you should choose a spot which is pure. He searched for such a place on the whole earth but could not find it. Hundreds of civilizations had come up & perished on the earth & there was no spot where spittle, blood had not been shed. He was confused & did not know what to do.
So, Bharthari said to his Guru – I couldn’t find any spot on the whole earth which is absolutely clean.
The Guru said – There is only one alternative, & this is to accomplish the sadhana seated in midair. Through inner resonance, one should produce intense energy that could make the body light & help it float up.
How is this possible?
This sure is possible if one could produce an inner resonance for 32 minutes. Success actually depends up on you.
Through Kriya Yoga, such a resonance can be produced. You just try & if you fail then you can criticize me. I shall be responsible. But to try is hard & you won’t try it. It is easy to criticize & that you shall. To criticize others does not need courage, it in fact denotes fears & we have made it a habit to criticize others.
We should first practice what we preach. We should produce a very intense resonance that could generate a lot of heat inside. When heat is generated in an airplane, such a massive structure easily rises into the air. If the heat escapes through a vent, the airplane won’t be able to rise.
There are no less than 10 openings to the body & energy keeps escaping out of them. You have never seen a person dying. It is an experience in itself. When the person dies, then the energy within escapes from any of the ten openings. The ten openings are – two eyes, two nasal openings, mouth, anus, sex organ, navel & the two ears. Energies keep pouring out of these ten openings. It is because of flow of energy that a person can see or listen something. And when a person speaks, energy comes out in the form of sound waves. Naturally, the energy keeps pouring out.
But if the entire energy of the body is concentrated & not allowed to escape out, a vehement force is generated. Generally, the energy escapes because the Lord has not provided us with plugs that could stop these openings. Hence, when one has become skilled in producing out resonance for thirty two minutes, one should close all the ten openings and start inner resonance. This is the second stage and when resonance is produced having all the ten openings closed, the heat inside will not be able to escape & it shall be trapped inside. The process of producing energy through inner resonance & damming it inside is called Cheitanya Kriya. This is the first step towards Samadhi.
How is Cheitanya Kriya accomplished? Cheitanya means to activate the soul & the Chakras of Kundalini, it is not necessary to activate each Chakra separately. All Chakras can be activated at the one go. Activation of the Kundalini involves the following steps. First Bhasrika is performed, i.e. one breathes very fast & deep for a few minutes. Thus, Muladhaar Chakra is activated first & then Swadhistthan is activated followed by the other Chakaras. But sometimes something might go wrong. If the energy doesn’t get channelized properly & it strays from its right course, the person can become mentally disbalance. But through Kriya Yoga, not just one Chakra at a time, rather all the Chakras are activated at a single go. This is called complete activation of the Kundalini power or the activation of Sahastrar. And this is possible only through the Cheitanya Kriya.
But how to close all the ten openings? I am explaining the practical process to you. For closing the ten openings, the ankle of the left foot is positioned under the anus & then one sits on it. The right foot is positioned near sex organ. This is a very comfortable position & one does not tire even if one sits thus for ten hours. With the two thumbs close the two ears. With the two forefingers, close the eyes. With middle fingers, close the nostrils & with ring and small fingers close the lips. Then start inner resonance. Try this for a minute. When you can do it for five minutes, you can ask someone to slide a scale under you & it shall easily slide through. I can guarantee this, you can try for yourself. If you try sincerely, your body shall start to rise into the air.
Samadhi means a state which is attained when all the ten openings are closed & inner resonance is produced. When this happens, one enters into Samadhi. To make the body light so that it rises into the air is called Samadhi. For Samadhi, it is necessary that all Chakras of the Kundalini are activated. Samadhi means activation of all Chakras, activation of the inner consciousness & being completely cut off from the outer world. A person in Samadhi seems to be in deep sleep.
Now you might ask – Will the body go on rising when it is in Samadhi? No, this is not so. At the most one can rise four feet into the air by this method. Of course, if one can rise four feet, one can rise forty feet or even a mile. But for that the resonance has to be very fast. The more intense the resonance, the higher one shall go. And when the resonance is decreased, the body shall descend.
Now you might ask – Does one remain aware in Samadhi when to increase or decrease the resonance. Samadhi means activation of the inner consciousness. Sure, you are cut off from the outer world. But when this happens, a light appears within which pours forth from one’s countenance & physical form. You might have seen the aura shown in the pictures of Lord Ram & Krishna around their faces. If such an aura can surround their faces, then it can also appear around your face too, because you are divine too. Only you have to realize it. When the joy from within starts to pour out, those present around are left amazed by what they see. They see an attractive face, large bright eyes & a divinity around the physical form.
In Samadhi, one becomes fully conscious. What more, one doesn’t even need oxygen. Frogs hibernating under the earth do not need oxygen. They remain trapped thus without oxygen for six months & they remain alive. Why do we have to breathe in so much oxygen? Because we perform so many activities. We move around, do things that requires energy. This is why we need oxygen. If the energy within is preserved & not used, then the oxygen present inside the body would be enough to sustain life. One can enter into Samadhi for two days, two years or even for five hundred years.
And the next stage of Samadhi is called Amrityu or immortality. Samadhi can be of several years and the more the years, the more one lives. To make the whole body active, to activate all Chakras & to tap the elixir that is present in the navel region this is the very process which is called Cheitanya Kriya.
Through this process, a resonance can be created permanently. Through this, one can sit in midair & enter Samadhi. When this happens, a light is produced within. Then a radiance appears on one’s face. You shall never see sorrow or pain reflect from the eyes of Lord Krishna. There exists a joy that is reflected in his eyes. It is because there is a light within. To generate such a light, there is the process of Samadhi. It is a very easy activity in which no mantra is chanted.
But if you want to experience true joy, you shall have to try this activity. For totality in life, you shall have to adopt this process. The Guru can only show you the right way. It is then up to you to follow it. You can only lead a horse to a water hole. You can only show the water to it & ask it to drink. But if it refuses to do so, what can you do?
You listen to a Guru & then you return home. After six months, you are back with new problems. The Guru had shouted for four hours on Kriya Yoga, what about it? Guruji, Kriya Yoga is good. But please tell me how to run my business.
You are caught in useless activities that can only lead you into sorrows. What you sow is what you reap, what can the Guru do? The Guru can only lead you to activities that can bring you totality. To perform those activities is up to you.
The activity that leads to totality is called Kriya Yoga. It is the first step that leads to Siddhashram, the divine land of greatest Yogis. This very process is also called Siddhashram Sadhana & it sure can lead to totality in life. If you read the book written by Lahiri Mahashaya, you will find a mention of Kriya Yoga in it. And he has said that he had to go about a lot in search of a Guru who could give Kriya Yoga Diksha. He said that he had to face so many challenges & he was subjected to so many tests. His Guru tested him in every possible way & only then did he give him Diksha.
And because Shyamcharan Lahiri could pass those tests, I still remember his name although I forget the names of his sons. I still remember the name of Ma Anandmayi. Great are those individuals whose names remain etched in my memory.
There are many paths that lie open before you. Suppose you are forty years old right now, even if you try your best, you cannot rise to the level of Birla in earning money. Neither can you rise as high as Tata. In the Luni village, there is man who has nineteen children. He had twenty four but five died. Still, he has nineteen children and you cannot even beat him.
Millions have followed the materialistic path, but they remained unaware of the path that leads to totality. Very few people are bold enough to tread on to the path of spirituality. But if you follow this path, you can be famous worldwide. You can help thousands of individuals spiritually & you can achieve totality in life.
Even if you devote just half an hour daily, it would be a great service to the Guru & yourself. A Guru can expect at least this much from you. The Guru doesn’t want a Dhoti or Kurta or some money from you. All he wants is daily practice of Kriya Yoga for at least half an hour. This is the only Guru Dakshina he expects from you.
I bless you all that may you rise in your life, may you be able to awaken all your Chakras & attain divinity. I bless you all again from the depth of my heart.
