As mentioned earlier, not all the spirits are bad spirits just like not all the human beings are bad. This is also a fact that life doesn’t end when our soul departs from our body. A different life exists beyond this life on earth which is even more powerful than our current life, which can have more impact on our life and is beyond the control of normal human beings. All the hurdles of this earthly life, all the control of this life gets removed in that life and the person gets transformed into an energy particle. The Hindu philosophy mentions that the body of a human being consists of earth, water, fire, air and sky. When a person dies, the soul gets relieved from the body and thus gets rid of the earth component due to which no significance of gravitational attraction exists and the soul is free to roam around.
Our complete life is controlled by different types of energies and we don’t have any control over them. This is the reason why a person is not able to live a life that he or she wishes to live. One can’t be put into the category of a happy person if he or she is rich. There might be several shortcomings in the life of such a person, he or she might be suffering from various diseases. Can’t this be possible that the way we keep our vehicle under our full control, we can keep our life under such a control? Wherever or whenever we wish, we can turn our life into that direction. And above all, we can identify who are the persons who care for us, who are those who are envy of us and are planning to harm us and how to destroy their evil plans.
Ancestors hold enormous power because they are not tied within this body. They are true form of energy and siddhis. When favorable, they can tell about the issues a person is going to face in near future, they can guide onto a path which has less or no troubles, they can help up to perform those tasks which can bring success and fame in our life. They can create a magnetic aura around us. They can bring harmony in our life. Nothing is impossible for them; only thing that is required is to appease them.
However, if they are unsatisfied, they can bring a havoc in the family. The reason behind such a behavior is the fact that they need salvation from this form and it is only the family members who can relieve them. Within their lives, they might have knowingly or unknowingly done bad karmas and the only possible way to get over these karmas is to go through all the tortures of being in this spirit phase. Another easier way exists; but for that one needs an able Guru, a Guru who has the power to relieve such poor souls from the tortures they are suffering from and alleviate there pains.
Pitra Paksha is the ideal time designated by the Hindu Shastras to offer Tarpan (oblations) to the departed ancestors in a family. It is said that the ancestors residing in the Pitraloka (the world of the departed souls) are permitted to visit the Bhulok (earth) especially during the Pitra Paksha in a year to accept the oblations given by their descendants. The offerings made as appropriate as prescribed in the Shastras are believed to appease them and win their blessings for the family.
Year on year, Pitra paksha occurs during the Krishna Paksha (waning phase or dark fortnight of lunar month) of Bhadrapada month just before the start of Navratris. Srimad Bhagavad Gita says the body is perishable, but the soul is deathless. In fact, the soul is never born or dies. It is eternal and immortal. Neither the five elements nor any force on the earth can destroy it. However, it wears the shell of physical body and therefore needs to experience the cycle of births and deaths. After giving up its earthly figure, the soul temporarily takes refuge in the Pitraloka until it gets another body to continue with the cycle.
Those souls residing over there feel hunger and thirst for which no material food can be of any use. They need to rely on the Tarpan that is offered by their descendants or family members they left behind on the earth. Therefore oblations to them are necessary to help them out and win their blessings. While it is customary to perform shradh for them year on year on the month and date on which they left their bodies, annually, Pitra Paksha is the right time specially designated for the ancestors to visit the families they left behind to accept the offerings they are given.
Our Hindu texts have set apart sixteen days just to serve our departed ancestors. On these different days, people must offer oblations to their departed family members. The most important day of these sixteen days can be termed as the day of Sarva Pitra Amavasya. This day is useful to pay oblations to all the ancestors who died on Amavasya as well as for all those who departed on any other day. If one does not know the date on which some member of their family died, one can perform the Tarpan on this day. Also, this is the ideal time for providing Tarpan to those for whom yearly oblations are missed out.
There are few people in this world who feel all this is useless and are some traditions created by the Brahmins just to feed themselves. However, it is not true. All our holy texts mentions the importance of Pirta Paksha. One of my acquaintance too belonged to such a category. He was a professor and was an atheist. He never believed in God and His presence. One day, his wife died and he didn’t even perform the necessary procedures like last rites for his wife considering them useless. It was merely a few weeks when he started to feel a presence of his wife in the house.
One night while he was asleep, he felt someone was sitting on his chest and was choking him. Out of breathlessness and fear, he woke up and saw the spirit of his wife. She was in great anger and asked him to perform her last rites. That person didn’t need any further proof about the presence of other beings in the world. The very next day, he met a Brahmin who used to deal with the last rites and requested him to help his wife to get relieved. The Brahmin arranged a puja in his house and that night the wife again came in his dream and thanked him for the holy procedures performed by him to relieve her.
This small incident tells us about the importance of what all has been mentioned in our ancient texts and they are not just fake stories. What all has been mentioned is for our own benefit and it is up to us to either take full advantage of it or ignore this knowledge. It is a fact that until a person remains indebted under the ancestors, the person can’t attain true success in life. If the deceased ancestors don’t get completely satisfied, they start interfering in the life of their children. The reason behind their interference is just to bring the attention of their offspring towards the fact that they need salvation from the spiritual world. They do so by bringing pain, hurdles, diseases, loss of wealth etc. in the life of their offspring.
Under such a circumstance, a person can’t conclude the real reason behind such a turmoil in the life. He can’t make out why all his efforts are going in vain, why he is facing these many hurdles in life, why there is a continuous loss in the business, why there is no peace of mind for him, why his house has become a quarrel ground and why the children don’t obey him. All these traits can be attributed to unsatisfied ancestors.
On the other hand, if the ancestors get appeased, they can bring a rise of fortune in the life of their offspring. They can bestow name, fame, popularity, success, wealth and what not in their life. Thus it is of utter importance to appease the ancestors and help them in their journey towards salvation. Presented below is a Sadhana that can help our ancestors to get relieved from their sufferings and to satisfy them.
Sadhana Procedure:
One needs Pitra Mukti Yantra, Prayan Gutika and Divya rosary. This Sadhana must be performed early in the morning on any day during the Pitra Paksha. Take a bath and get into fresh white clothes. Sit on a white mat facing south. Take a wooden plank and cover it with a fresh piece of white cloth. Light a ghee lamp and incense sticks. Now place a picture of revered Gurudev and worship Him as per the rituals mentioned in Dainik Sadhana Procedure book.
Next, place Pitra Mukti Yantra in front of Gurudev’s picture and encircle the yantra with Divya rosary. The sadhak should write the name of the ancestor for whom this procedure is performed on the yantra with vermillion ink. If the sadhak wants to perform the procedure for all the ancestors, the write “Sarva Pitra” on the yantra. Worship the yantra and rosary with vermillion, rice grains, flower petals etc. and place Prayan Gutika over the yantra.
Then chant one round of Guru Mantra followed by 11 rounds of the mantra below.
