Humans have existed on this planet since six million years and have evolved, built tools, created civilizations, adapted to their environment, and became the humans we are today. All these hundreds of thousands of generations that lived on this planet before we have given us something. The languages that we speak, the way we sit, technology – almost everything that we know today has been inherited from generations before us, even our own existence. If we owe Newton for the various laws of motion, don’t we owe something towards our ancestors who have provided so much to us?
In the current era, we have taken everything that we have today for granted. However, without the generations that existed before us, firstly we would not exist here and secondly, without their contribution, we would not have all the things that we have today. They saved their knowledge for us, they saved their possessions for us, and they saved the environment for us, which has given us the advantage of starting from some level instead of starting everything from scratch. As Einstein said, “I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.” This shows that he believed the weapons used in World War III would be so devastating that civilization as we know would be gone. What he means by this is all that we possess today will be wiped out and everything will have to be started from scratch. We can only think of the efforts and number of years that would be required to reach to the current level of civilization.
And due to this reason only, Indian culture has given importance to various festivals and each festival has its own significance in the life of the people. Similarly, a dedicated period of time has been kept aside when a person can remember his or her ancestors and perform special sadhanas to guide them to higher spiritual levels. This period is none other than Pitra Paksha.
The period of Pitra Paksha is that phase which was dedicated to appease and pacify our ancestors by our sages. However, the irony is that, we have forgotten this festival and those who observe this period, don’t follow the rituals properly. Today, there are hardly a few people who can properly guide us in this field.
When a person is about to die, then comes a phase when he or she reaches a state of sub-consciousness and Lord Chitragupta appears before him or her. The entire life of the person gets replayed before the eyes just like we see a movie. Based on the deeds a person has performed in the present life, his or her next life gets decided accordingly.
Most of the time, when the soul departs the body, the person remains engrossed in feelings like fear, hatred, deceit etc. and doesn’t remember God or thinks about oneself. It has been said that Ante Yaa Matih Saa Gatih i.e. the next life of a person depends upon the feeling the person has at the time of his or her death. If a person dies with a lot of unfulfilled wishes, the soul of the person don’t believe that he or she is dead. The body lies in front of the soul which keeps on looking at it in great astonishment and pain.
The reason behind this astonishment is that the person wanted to live more to fulfill the remaining desires. The soul needs a body to fulfill the desire and continues to roam around its dead body. When the body is completely burnt, the soul gets frustrated and starts to wander here and there to find means to fulfill the wishes.
Under such a situation, this soul needs the guidance of an able person, a SadGuru, who can guide it on the right path or help from the family members to perform some special sadhana procedures so that the soul proceeds ahead to the higher levels.
Souls can’t eat the materialistic food, they can just sense its fragrance. Similarly, they can listen to our words and can absorb the positive or negative vibes. Thus one must pledge in the name of the deceased family member and perform sadhana in their name to help them. The waves generated during the mantra chanting are directly received by the soul and guides it on to the path of higher levels. Such a soul then no longer wanders here or there and takes a rebirth quickly.
There are two special advantages of performing sadhanas related to our ancestors. First, we exist because of our ancestors as they are the ones who gave us this body. Thus we are indebted towards them. Thus if we perform sadhana and guide them to the next level, they get highly pleased with us and removes all sorts of troubles from our life.
Secondly, till the time the ancestor doesn’t get an opportunity for a rebirth, his or her wishes will remain unfulfilled. In such a circumstance, the soul keeps on searching for a human body to fulfill its desires. As we inherit a lot of traits from our ancestors, thus these souls can easily get their wishes fulfilled via us. Due to this reason, a person feels an increase in laziness, anger, lust, greed etc. but couldn’t understand this change in behavior.
Thus it is immensely important to perform special sadhanas that can guide our ancestors on the right path and help them get a rebirth. Such an action from our end will definitely appease them. The relieved person then starts making progress in each and every aspect of life. Such a sadhak attains success in anything he or she do. He attains success in sadhanas, gain enormous amount of money, luxuries are bestowed upon him, he earns name and fame in society etc.
