Shri Krishna Janmashtmi: 24 August
So, one fine day, all of them prepared their best delicacy and left to seek blessings from the great sage. However when they approached the river crossing with their offerings, they found the river was in flood and proved impossible to pass. They were extremely sad to see this and started to feel bad about their luck. Lord Krishna looked at His wives and pitied on them.
Nitya Upvasi (one who eternally fasts) said Lord Krishna and asked His wives to pray to the Ganges river: “Mother, if Sage Durvasa is a ‘nitya upvasi‘, please part so we may cross over to him”.
The wives of Krishna did so, and the Ganges River parted to let them cross onto sage Durvasa’s side. There, to their complete amazement, Durvasa Muni attacked on the entire pile of the food and ate all the 16,108 dishes leaving no remnants of the feast for any of his disciples. Looking at such an astonishing event, Lord Krishna’s wives started to murmur, “How can a person who fasts eternally can eat all this?” However, none of them dared to speak about it as they feared the short tempered sage.
The bewildered wives of Krishna then attempted to return to their husband Krishna. On their way back, they again found that the river was impossible to cross. This time Lord Krishna was not there to help them and they hardly trusted the words, “Nitya Upvasi”, would work this time as they have seen sage Durvasa galloping the entire feast.
Then they heard a voice, Nitya Brahmachari (eternal celibate). This time, Durvasa Muni gave them the mantra for praying to river: Mother Ganga, if our husband Lord Krishna, is a ‘nitya brahmachari’, please part so that we may be reunited with Him. The disbelieving wives somehow mumbled this prayer, and to their amazement the Ganges parted allowing them to return into the waiting arms of their husband Lord Krishna on the other side. Astonishingly, Krishna (the ‘nitya brahmachari’) remained very much the loving husband, and His wives were more bewildered than ever before.
Understanding good karma and bad karma is very difficult for the learned. To understand what is akarma, or how to become free from karma is even more difficult to comprehend. All actions performed with the mind on the Divine, without any sense of doer-ship, desire or expectation of fruit are actions of akarma (non-actions). Thus one who eats in that spirit, is a nitya upvasi and one who engages in conjugal relations with that attitude, is a nitya brahmachari.
The Lotus leaf remains in the water, but it never gets wet. The minute it is removed from the water, all the water trickles off, leaving none behind. All those who are centered on the Divine in a spirit of renunciation and devotion, allowing nature to perform its duties, are like Lotus leaves in this world and are not touched by it. Sinless and incurring no karma, they are situated in the Divine and eventually attain the Supreme.
