Shani Jayanti: 10-June
GridhraSthitam Traasakaram Dhanurdharam.
ChaturBhujam SuryaSutam Prashaantam,
Vande SadaaBhishtakaram Varenyam.
In our routine lives, there is a great importance of the kindness and the power of God Shani. Shani occupies the seventh place among the nine planets which govern the world. This is viewed as unlucky in conventional astrology. As per astronomy, the distance of Saturn from the earth is 9 crore miles. Its radius is about one billion and 82 crore and 60 lakh kilometers. And its gravitational force is 95 times higher than that of the earth. Planet Saturn takes 19 years to complete one revolution around the Sun.
Saturn’s gravitational power is more than that of the Earth’s. Therefore, when we think anything good or bad and make plans, they reach Saturn by the strength of its power. In astrological terms, the bad influence is considered as unlucky. But the results of good deeds are definitely good. Therefore, we must understand Lord Saturn as a friend and not as foe. And for bad deeds, he is Sade Saathi, disaster and an enemy.
There are several stories related to the birth of Lord Saturn. Foremost and accepted is the one in the Kasi Khanda of the ancient ‘Skand Purana‘ which is as follows.
Lord Sun was married to Daksha’s daughter, Sadnya. Sadnya could not tolerate the radiance of Lord Sun. She used to feel that by doing penance she could increase her brilliance. Or, by the power of her penance, she could diminish the glare of Lord Sun. From Lord Sun, she had three children. One was Vaivastahva Manu. The second was Yama Raj. And the third was Yamuna. Sadnya loved her children very much but was very upset with the radiance of Lord Sun. One day, she thought that she would separate herself from Lord Sun, go to her parents’ home and undertake great penance. And if there was any opposition, she would go far away to a lonely place and undertake great penance.
By strength of her penance, Sadnya created a ‘Chaya’, shadow, of herself and named her Suvarna. After handing over the children to Chaya, Sadnya told her that Chaya would thereafter play the role of womanhood and nurse her three children. She told her if any problem arose, she should call her and she would come rushing to her. But she cautioned her that she must remember that she was Chaya, not Sadnya, and nobody should know this difference.
Sadnya handed over her responsibilities to Chaya and went away to her parents’ place. She went home and told her father that she could not stand the radiance of Lord Sun. And therefore, without telling her husband she had come away. Listening to this, her father scolded her and told her that without being called, if the daughter returns home, both the daughter and her father would be cursed. He told her to go back to her home immediately. Then, Sadnya began to worry that if she went back, what would happen to the responsibilities which she had given to Chaya. Where would Chaya go? And their secret would be exposed. So, Sadnya went to the dense jungles in Kurukshetra.
She was fearful of her safety in the jungle because of her youthfulness and beauty. And she changed her form into that of a mare so that none can recognize her and started her penance. Elsewhere, the union of Lord Sun and Chaya begot three children. Lord Sun and Chaya were happy with each other. Sun never doubted anything. The children of Chaya were Manu, Lord Saturn and daughter Bhadra (Tapti).
As per the second story, the creation of Lord Shani was the result of Maharishi Kashyap’s great holy sacrifice. When Lord Shani was in the womb of Chaya, Chaya was so engrossed in penance of God Shiva that she did not care for her food even. She prayed so intensely during her penance that the prayers had a profound influence on the child in her womb. As a result of such a great penance of Chaya, without food and shade in the blazing Sun, the complexion of Lord Saturn became black. When Lord Saturn was born, Sun was surprised to see his dark complexion. He began to doubt Chaya. He insulted Chaya by saying that this was not his son. From birth itself, Lord Saturn had inherited the great powers of his mother’s penance. When He saw that his father was insulting his mother, Lord Saturn saw his father with a cruel gaze. As a result his father’s body was charred black. The horses of Lord Sun’s chariot stopped and won’t move. Worried, Lord Sun called out to Lord Shiva who advised Lord Sun and explained to him about what had happened. Lord Sun accepted his fault and apologized and thus regained his earlier glorious looks and the power of his chariot’s horses. Since then, Lord Saturn became a good son to his father and mother and an ardent disciple of Lord Shiva.
There are both positive as well as negative influence of Lord Saturn in our life. A malefic Saturn brings following short comings in life:
1. The person might get bankrupt or face huge financial losses.
2. The person becomes lazy and is hardly able to use his wisdom.
3. Such person waste their time in useless activities.
4. He finds pleasure in harming and insulting others.
5. The person becomes selfish and cunning.
6. Such a person remains dissatisfied in life.
7. Such person speaks foul words.
8. Life of such people is full of troubles and failures.
People generally treat Lord Saturn just as a fearful God, however, as mentioned earlier, He is the one who gives proper justice to our deeds. All those who have done good deeds in life are favored by Lord Saturn and those who did misdeeds are punished by the Lord. On one hand where Lord Saturn is associated with various sufferings, losses in business, disgrace, betrayal, enemies, jealousy etc., He is the one who can grant great success, name, fame and prosperity in life too. Following are the advantages of a benevolent Lord Shani:
1. A person becomes organized, hard worker, sober and an eloquent speaker.
2. The person gains success quickly.
3. Such a person can easily identify the real trait of any person.
4. A person becomes confident, strong will powered, cautious and a clever businessman.
5. Such a person takes a keen interest in spirituality.
6. Such person gains success in whatever field they choose in life.
The world of Sadhanas is so great that our ancestors have found a solution for every problem. There are means to appease unfavorable planets too by the power of Sadhanas. Presented below is one very powerful Sadhana of Lord Saturn which has been highly praised in ancient texts to appease Lord Saturn and get boons from Him.
One needs Shani MahaYantra and Black Hakeek rosary for this Sadhana. Get up early in the morning on the day of Shani Jayanti (a person can also perform the Sadhana on any Saturday also) and take a bath. Wear fresh black cloth and sit on a black mat facing North. Take a wooden plank and cover it too with a fresh piece of black cloth. Place a picture of revered SadGurudev and offer water, rice grains, flower petals, vermillion etc. Light an oil lamp and an incense stick. Now chant one round of Guru Mantra and seek the blessings of Gurudev for success in Sadhana.
Next place Shani MahaYantra in front of Gurudev’s picture. This yantra is energized with special mantras and is useful for the entire life. One point to take care of is that each member of the family must have their yantra for performing the Sadhana. Now offer black sesame seeds and some jaggery on to the yantra. Now chant Shani Strotra 11 times.
Konashtha Pinglo Vabhruh Krishno Raudrontako Yamah,
Saurih Shanischaro Mandah PippalaaDena Sanstutah.
Etani Dasha Naamaani PraataRutthaaya Yah Pathet,
Sahnishchara Krita Pida Na Kadaachit Bhavishyati.
If a person finds it difficult to speak out the above hymn, one can instead recite the following ten names of Lord Saturn.
(1) Konashta,
(2) Pingal,
(3) Vabhru,
(4) Krishna,
(5) Raudra,
(6) Antaka,
(7) Yama,
(8) Sauri,
(9) Shanishchara,
(10) Manda
Dhwajini Dhaamini Chaiva Kankaali Kalah-Priya,
Kalahi Kantaki Chaapi Ajaa Mahishi Tunangamaa
Namani Shani-Bharyah Ya Nityam Japati Yah Pumaan,
Tasya Dhukhaani Nashyanti Sukham Saubhaaya Medhate.
Recite the following names of Lord Saturn’s wife 11 times if you have recited the names of Lord Saturn above.
(1)Dhvajini,
(2) Dhaamini,
(3) Kankaali,
(4) Kalah-Priya,
(5) Kalahi,
(6) Kantaki,
(7) Ajaa,
(8) Mahishi,
(9) Tunagama
If a person chants Shani Strotra and Shani Bharya Strotra (or their names) 11 times every Saturday, the person remains free from the unfavorable effects of Saturn and is instead blessed with the positive effects.
Place the Shani Yantra at a safe place or in your worship place. It is fine if a person misses out on performing the above ritual once. However, the person must try to repeat the procedure on all the Saturdays which brings all sorts of pleasure, wealth, fortune, name and fame in life. Not only this, the person remains away from forthcoming troubles in life.
