Pitra Paksha : 1st Sept – 17th Sept
However, if we go through our ancient texts like Vedas, Purans, Upanishads etc. then we can gain a lot of confidence in this word. Guru is not alike any other common person and thus Gurutatva (the essence of Guru) itself becomes divine. All of these texts talk about our great Gurus and their significant contribution towards society.
The Guru may be in the form of Vishwamitra, who helped his disciple Ram, to defeat his enemy Ravana and eradicate the demons from this earth. The Guru may also be in the form of Ram Krishna Param who blessed his pupil Vivekanand with Divine knowledge, using which Vivekanand helped the Indians to regain faith in themselves and their religion. Two examples have been quoted here from two very vastly separated eras of our Aryan civilization; just to show how old is this Guru and Disciple relationship.
Mentioned below is one of Kabir’s famous sayings, where he has tried to narrate the greatness of Guru.
Guru Govind Dou Khade, Ka Ke Lagun Paaye,
Balihari Guru Aapne, Govind Diyo Batae
Here Kabir mentions the Guru to be greater than God. He says that when Guru and Govind (Lord Krishna) both appeared before him, he wasn’t able to decide as to whose feet he should touch. Then realising the supremacy of Guru, who enabled him to witness Govind, he touched his Guru’s feet.
Guru is one who fulfills both materialistic and non-materialistic wishes to his disciple. If you are an empty stomach and the Guru tries to teach you sadhana, then you will not be able to concentrate on the sadhana. Instead, your entire focus will be on the food only. Due to this reason, first, we need to eradicate poverty from our life by means of sadhanas. Once we are able to eradicate all the shortcomings of our life, then we can achieve totality in life…….this is necessary because we are living a materialistic life.
An ascetic doesn’t know the problems that we face in a household life; a man wearing saffron clothes can’t understand the situation when the daughter becomes 24 years old. He can’t understand the tension but you can understand that.
An ascetic can’t understand the hunger. This is because wherever he will stand and give his blessings, people will feed them ghee and various sweets. They are far healthier than us, their face isn’t pale. They have reddish cheeks and our cheeks are all deflated. None of these ascetics are dying out of hunger, all of them are living a healthy life and we are all pale. We are sad and full of tension, they are healthier because they are fed with food free of cost…and we have to put in lots of ef orts for the same. We barely survive by all our efforts.
Thus the meaning of sadhana is that what all shortcomings are there in our life…..if you have lots of diseases then no matter how many sadhanas Guru teaches you, you won’t achieve success in it because you won’t be able to accomplish the sadhana. Will you cough or perform the sadhana?
If you don’t have a son, still you won’t be able to perform sadhana because tension is there in your mind. If you have a grown-up daughter, again you won’t be able to concentrate. If the wife quarrels with her husband or the husband quarrels with the wife and even if you sit in sadhana with closed eyes…..then the wife will start shouting, “I already told you not to go there, you won’t get anything, they don’t teach anything out there. You are uselessly sitting here with closed eyes, are you going to the shop or not, what are you doing….and this will start the quarrel.
Thus it is the duty of the Guru to first solve the problems of his disciple by means of the sadhanas. If he is able to remove all these hurdles from your life, then only he is Guru, a person just delivering his sermons can’t be a true Guru….the problem doesn’t get solve like this and such a person is also not a Guru.
Guru is one who can understand your problems. Guru is one who can understand your pain. Guru is one who can relieve you from your miseries, who can teach you the sadhana, who can give you the mantra using which you can eradicate all your pains and shortcomings of your life.
You can’t get rid of your problems through your efforts. Had it been possible, you wouldn’t need Guru. If you could get free of all your debts or of your poverty then why would you need Guru, then what is the necessity of meeting the Guru? You have already invested forty-five years of effort in your life and you have already tried all other means.
You have tried for forty-five years and you know that the son doesn’t obey you. No matter how much you try to convince him, he will not obey you. If the son is not studying, then he is not studying. If there are quarrels between husband and wife, then they are there. If there is some disease then you have taken hundreds of medicine for the ailment but still, it is troubling you. Now if the disease is not getting cured by your and doctor’s efforts, then what is the solution for this?
The solution is that you should have the correct Guru, one who understands your problems and who himself has achieved totality in life. If he himself is incomplete, then what can he give you? One who himself is desirous of getting five rupees from you, how would he give you completeness in life?
If I expect that you should give me ten rupees, then how come I can make you compete in life? If I am a beggar, then what can I give you? I must myself be successful in the sadhanas.
I am saying so because sadhana is the only mean by which we can remove all the problems from our life. The shastras emphasizes on a single shloka, on one thought processes only –
Poorvai Mataam Poorna Madaiva Tulyam,
Gyaanorvataam Paritam Bhavatam Sadaiva.
Chintyovameva Bhavatam Paripoorna Poornam,
Poornom Twadaam Bhavata Poorna Madaiva Poornam.
Sadhana is the means by which we can achieve totality in life by chanting the mantras related to various Gods and Goddesses. We can obtain wealth by performing Lakshmi Sadhana and we can become knowledgeable by the sadhana of Goddess Saraswati. We are humans and we can’t achieve totality in life with the help of humans, we need some divine powers for the same.
It is not necessary to be acquainted with the Gods for performing a sadhana. You can chant mantras related to Gods, but Gods aren’t familiar with you also. You of er something to Lord Ram but he is not familiar with you and you even don’t know this. There should be a relationship in between you both, you can dissolve water in water, oil in oil.
You can build up a relationship with the means of sadhanas, both of you will get familiar with each other. Due to this reason, only this shloka includes the mantra related to Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess Saraswati, Lord Shiva. If you can chant this mantra every day and with complete devotion, it will definitely reduce the gap in between you and the Gods.
Definitely they are complete and due to this reason they are called, they are called Lakshmi, they are called Saraswati, they are called Shiva, Vishunu, Brahma. The reason they are called so is that they possess completeness in whatever core they possess. When the gap will reduce, you will be able to achieve whatever they possess.
We can easily get some thousand rupees from a multi-millionaire. Lakshmi herself is a multi-millionaire, she is the owner of the entire worldly possessions. We can obtain wealth from her, but only if we can reduce the gap…..and we can do that by the means of sadhanas. Sadhanas mean chanting of mantras and mantra chanting means selection of the words which Gods can understand. If I explain you something in Chinese or some other foreign language for half an hour, you won’t understand a single word.
Three situations will come before you while traveling on this path. First is that you should have the intent to serve your Guru. If you can’t serve Him, you can’t walk on this path. Serving is the base of traveling on this path and you have no services towards your Guru’s feet. You can’t see the Ganges in your Guru’s feet, you just witness feet there and by just seeing the feet, you can’t attain consciousness in life.
Your eyes should be filled with tears when you are unable to see Him. If you are at such a level, if you have such an affinity towards your Guru, then consider that you have achieved consciousness in life. You all should attain a stage where you should feel anxious if you can’t see your Guru for one week. You should feel uneasy and try to meet Him, you feel that none of your work looks interesting to you and even the Guru should feel this uneasiness, why the disciple hasn’t come, what happened to him, he must have come. If one achieves such a stage, then that disciple has reached the stage of consciousness.
And you people sometimes start chanting Hanuman Chalisa. Nothing significant will happen in your life by chanting this Hymn. You can perform Yagya for the whole life pouring several kilograms of ghee or oil into the fire and chanting Lakshmi Aarti and your father and forefather did the same and so can you. However, Lakshmi never came before your ancestors and will neither appear before you like this. Lakshmi can’t be pleased by chanting Aarti or pouring ghee, there is a separate method to appease Her. That other path is the path of becoming conscious not a corpse. Your life is like a corpse and you are bound within a small circle which includes your wife, your children, your mother and father, and some twenty-twenty five thousand pieces of paper and that’s all. You have nothing apart from all these! You need to step outside of that small circle and step into this bigger one which is the path of sadhanas but for that, you should have service towards your Guru.
If you feel that Hanuman Ji will help you win a lottery if you make Him an offering of some sweets of five Howdred rupees, then He will win a lottery for Himself, why for you?
There was a temple of Lord Hanuman and separated one kilometer apart was a temple of Lord Ram. One person reached Lord Ram’s temple and starting praying to Him, “Shri RamChand Kripalu Bhaj Man Haran Bhavbhaya Daarunam” and after that offered food to Him. Lord Ram was appeased and appeared before him, “What happened my child?”
He said – My wife is lost.
Lord Ram said – Look, this is not my department. One kilometer afar is a temple of Lord Hanuman. He looks after such cases. Even my wife was lost and I couldn’t find her. He was the one who found her. You should also go to Him.
Here there are various departments. If you go to Lord Ram and seek his help to find your wife then Lord Ram will not be able to help you in this case. You will have to go and seek Lord Hanuman’s favor. And if you go to Lord Hanuman and pray to Him to help you to find a suitable match for yourself then He will reply that I am myself a bachelor. I couldn’t find a match for myself, then how can I help you.
We have segregated Gods and have assigned tasks to them. Thus there is no advantage to pray to those Gods and give them various offerings.
To serve means to serve with selflessness. There should be no selfish intentions behind that service. And you should serve and serve along with sacrifice, and sacrifice of something which is most dear to you.
If you have five kilograms of sweets and you of er one piece of it to someone, then that is not a sacrifice. You have only one chapatti and you offer half of it with some then that is a sacrifice. However, the sacrifice should only be done where it is worthy.
If you buy a kurta for me by sacrificing your money, then your sacrifice is worthless. This is because I already have fifty kurtas so your kurta will be useless for me. If you offer me, sweets, then it is also a waste because I don’t eat sweets. If you offer me a box of sweets then it is of no use for me.
Instead of that if you perform some work-related society and all those people who helped in building this hall are getting a part of this holy deed. Even though I bought the land, yet all those people who helped in construction are liable to get some benefit from this…no matter it is the hundredth part or be it thousandth part, it is irrelevant. Something good is happening here, if I wouldn’t have bought this land, someone might have opened a bar here. However, it is the good luck of those people who created this hall that sadhanas are being performed here.
Now if you add some more facilities here, then it is your sacrifice. It will be of more use for all those who come here and perform sadhanas. There is no use in giving me more clothes or offering money to me or offering any sweets.
To serve corresponds to that work which is done by you and is useful for the common man. You can yourself see that the board here is not good; I should go and get a good board for here. I am not saying this so that you should go and bring a board, this is just an example. You can look for such things around you, maybe in the temple of Goddess Santoshi or Goddess Jagadamaba, wherever you have a feeling of sacrifice and wherever there is a place worth for a sacrifice.
Serve, then sacrifice, and then surrender oneself in hands of Guru. Surrendering means whatever we are today; we should surrender that feeling in the feet of Guru and completely get amalgamated in Him. Once you amalgamate yourself in Guru, you will be able to obtain everything in life. When the tumbler gets completely empty, then it can be completely filler. If your mind is completely filled, if your brain is completely filled or your heart is completely, then I can’t write a new letter there, my preaching will go as a waste.
If you bring a completely empty paper before me, then you will be able to read out whatever lines of wisdom I put into it. If it is already filled with lies, hatred, tricks, jealousy then what can I put into it? Where can I put into it?
To surrender in the feet of Guru means that whatever I am, I am completely empty. I have lived my life and now I wish that you should teach me how to live a life, I am ready to become whatever you want to make out of me, you tell me how to do it. I will follow all of your orders.
Then there is no use of the authority that you hold in society. It is of no use if you are a millionaire or you are a famous personality. To surrender in the feet of Guru means that you are nothing now; you can’t surrender in the feet of Guru and yet carry an attitude of being a famous man or that you are a very wise person. This is not surrendering in the holy feet of Guru. Surrendering means you are nothing, I am absolutely empty now, I don’t have any authority or money. Whatever there is, that is left behind at home; I am just a person standing in front of you for obtaining your grace.
When he gets these feelings, then he becomes a disciple after becoming a conscious man. Then only he becomes a disciple, he doesn’t become a disciple from the beginning. First, he is an anxious man, then he becomes a conscious man and when all the three points of a conscious man appear in his life, then only he becomes a disciple.
In Sanskrit, a disciple means coming closer. A disciple comes closer to the Guru. Coming near is not to stand before him with horns locked together. Coming closer means coming closer eternally, your heart and my heartbeat should become coherent. This is known as coming closer to Guru.
When the disciple is on the third stage, then he comes even closer to Guru. Coming closer means he doesn’t have any thought of himself, then he doesn’t have any questions or doubts, then there is no doubt that the person standing in front of me is a normal man or a God. Then he is filled with just one thought and that is he is my Guru and Gurur Brahma, Gurur Vishnu and he is everything for me.
When he touches the holy feet of Guru with such thought, then he doesn’t see skin there. He then witnesses Haridwar there, he finds Mathura there and he finds Kashi there. His eyes get filled with tears when he becomes a disciple….. and then he learns the knowledge of surrendering oneself in the holy feet of Guru.
And when he reaches such a stage, the Guru grants him all the boons. There is no give and take relationship here. To get into the heartbeats of the Guru means that we should get such close to Guru that our soul and His soul gets amalgamated, His body and our body gets amalgamated. Every moment there should be a thought about how I can please Him. This is because your body is definitely yours, but even the Guru’s body is yours. If a thorn pierces Guru’s feet then you should also feel the pain. You should feel that even though you don’t have any pain, then why there is such anxiety, something is definitely wrong. This can happen only if your soul gets attached to my soul. And when they get united, you will become a disciple.
Meera said, “Ankhiyan ki kari kothari”, I will create a room in my eyes, “Putali Palang Bichaaye” and will create a bed of my pupil in it.
“Ankhiyan Ki Kari Kothari Putali Palang Bichaaye
Palakan Ki Chik Daari Ke Piyu Ko Liya Rijhaaye ”
I want to please my beloved by this. I wish this because when this happens,
”Na Main Dehkun Aur Ko Na Tohe Dekhan Deyun”
I will not be able to see anyone and neither I will allow you to see anyone else.
When Kabir reached such a state, he said, “Main to Ram Ki Bahuriya”. It is mentioned in Shishyopanishad that Guru and disciple are just like lovers. This is because the most pious relationship in this world is of lovers, much pious that mother-father or brother-sister nor son-daughter relationship.
There is freshness in this relationship; every day there is a desire to meet the beloved. If for a single day the lover can’t see his beloved, he feels the entire day went in vain. He tries to console his heart. What could have happened to her, there must be some reason why she has not come today? Maybe she is sick or his parents must have stopped her…..her father is very cruel, I will twist his neck if I get a chance someday…she has not reached till now…I have asked her to meet at Cannaught Place, still there are five more minutes remaining, let me wait a bit more, she will definitely come. There will be no fault of her, her father is a big idiot….and you wait for her for the next two to three hours. What must have happened, should I go to her home, what will happen if her father sees me?
He will still go and will try to even get a glimpse of her and then will remain anxious for the entire night. Now there is no telephone, how can I call her? Mother always picks up the phone, this telephone can get freedom only if this old lady will die and the entire night will pass like this only. This is because this is the relationship between lovers. This is not a relationship of husband and wife, if you had your food then it is fine, if not have it tomorrow.
This happens…the same beloved for which you have spent so much time wandering around her for the last two years, you were not even feeling lively without her and the moment you married her, the love and that enthusiasm dies out…no attraction remains towards her….
And then people start looking out for a new beloved. Now she has become a wife, now what’s her use? She will complain that you come so late from the office and you will reply that you have loads of work in the office. I have not signed any contract to come home at five in the evening. She is the same beloved for whom you had such a great feeling. She will say she has not eaten the food and you will reply that there must be a stomach ace for why you have not eaten the food. Go and visit a doctor or take a medicine….now all that attraction has died out. There can be no attraction in between husband and wife.
Due to this reason I have said that the highest relationship in this complete universe is that of lovers and the same relationship should be there between Guru and disciple. Something like this should happen that if the time for three pm was given for meeting each other and if due to some reason the meeting can’t be held then there should be anxiety. He should try to look here and there for the Guru. There is an abusive word in Rajasthan, Nigura (meaning someone without a Guru), one who doesn’t have a Guru, his life is useless. if you don’t have a Guru, who will guide you in your life and also after your death. I bless that you may meet a true Guru in your life, may you achieve totality in your life so that you become divine and complete. I bless you once again from the depth of my heart.
