Curiosity is the inherent nature of human beings and due to this reason he has a keen inclination to notice everything happening around him. It is this curious nature of a human being which has led to the discoveries and inventions of several things. During the ancient human civilization, human beings started to notice that the heavenly bodies follow a defined routine. They started to notice that the sun rises at a certain time and also sets at a certain time. He also observed that distance between sun and earth keeps on reducing and increasing which leads to weather changes. He also started to notice the importance of time and found that there are some special times within a day which are very much suited for starting any new thing and there are time slots which must be absolutely avoided.
On gaining the knowledge of time, our great sages segregated the complete one day time (twenty four hours) into several time intervals. These great sages named these times as Mahendra Kal, Rahu Kal, Amrit Kal etc. and presented to the common public for their benefit.
However, on gaining more insight into these time slots, these sages observed that there are two days in a year which doesn’t have any ill impact of inauspicious time. These two days are VijayaDashmi and Akshaya Tritiya. Any task, whether it is related to starting a new business, or inauguration of a shop, or marriage etc. can be done on Akshaya Tritiya. The entire twenty four hours of this day are auspicious and are free from the ill effect of any inauspicious time.
Akshaya Tritiya has been highly praised in all Hindu religious texts. The word Akshaya in Hindi means undiminishing i.e. anything done on this auspicious day remains as it is and forever with the person. There has been a tradition of buying gold on this day. The reason behind this is that gold has been related to prosperity from the very beginning. Since, anything gained on this day is believed to stay with that person forever, they bought gold and the prosperity is assumed to stay forever with the person. The present era is materialistic in all sense and hence this thought got consolidated over the period of time.
However, Akshaya Tritiya is not only related to gaining prosperity. What is the use of that prosperity if it brings danger to our life? What is the use of that prosperity, if we can’t enjoy it? If we are suffering from any major illness and have become bed ridden, then again what is the use of that prosperity? In our ancient Hindu texts it has been clearly mentioned that Akshaya Tritiya is one such day on which any sadhana can be performed. And a person can perform as many sadhanas as he wishes to on this day. As said earlier, even the positive effect of the sadhana will get associated with the person performing this sadhana and will always stay with him or her.
Akshaya Tritiya is also the birthday of Lord Parasurama, who is the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. On this day Veda Vyas and Lord Ganesha began to write Mahabharata. Not only Hindus, even Jain texts have highly praised Akshaya Tritiya. Jains celebrate this day to celebrateTirthankaraRishabha’s ending of oneyear fast by consuming sugarcane juice poured into his cupped hands. In Jain and Hindu calendars, some days of the month are absent and some days become extra, but Akshay Tritiya is one day which is never “absent” from the lunar calendar.
On this day the Treta Yuga began and the river Ganges, the most sacred river of India, descended to the earth from the heaven. It was on this day that Goddess Annapoorna was born. Kuber received his wealth and position as the custodian of wealth and property with Goddess Lakshmi on this day, by praying to Lord Shiva at Shivapuram. In Mahabharata, Yudhishthira received the Akshaya Patra on this very day, using which he used to serve food to all the needy people in his kingdom.
It is on this day that poor Sudama, the best friend of Krishna, visited Lord Krishna to greet Him after He became the King. With nothing to offer, Sudama took with him Poha (puffed rice) and offered it to his friend and never discussed his poverty though he intended to. On his return, he found his hut changed to a palace. In more recent history, Adi Shankara recited the Kanaka Dhara Strota on this day for the sake of the poor couple who had nothing to offer Him but their only available gooseberry.
One thing to take into notice is that even any ill deed done on this day gets associated with the person forever. It is on this day that Dushasana, Duryodhana’s brother, tried to unveil Draupadi at the royal court where Krishna protected her. This misdeed of Dushasana led to the greatest disaster in the Indian mythology and we all are aware of the results. So, one must refrain from doing any ill deeds on this day.
General public gets involved into donations, arranging pujas at home etc. on this day. However, a conscious sadhak leverages this opportunity by performing at least one sadhana on this day. One must try to get initiated on this day by reaching into the holy feet of the Guru and pray to Him to grant a diksha. If due to some unavoidable circumstances, a person can’t reach into the holy feet of the Guru, then he must try to get initiated by a photograph on this day. An initiation is the spiritual power given by a SadGuru to His disciples which He gained over the period of time by performing several sadhanas. It is definitely a blessing, a rise in fortune to get initiated on this day because even the power of the initiation remains forever with the person.
Definitely this day is a boon for each and every individual. It is our fortune that we have taken birth on this divine land whose ancestors have identified such auspicious times for us. It is definitely our duty to take advantage of such great and auspicious days to fulfill our desires rather just wasting this day and cursing and crying on our fate for anything which is yet to be achieved in our life.
