Once there was a disciple who really wanted to attain something great in life. One day he went to his Guru and prayed to Him, “Gurudev, I want to make this life worthy. I want to do something which will make you proud and give me satisfaction in life. I don’t want to waste this precious life in which I am able to have a human form and am blessed with a great Guru like you.”
The Guru was pleased to listen to those words from his disciple and He gave Narayana mantra along with the idol of Lord Narayana. He also shared the secret mantra with the disciple and guided the disciple about the Sadhana procedure. The Guru told the disciple that if he sincerely worship the Lord, he will be able to get success in the Sadhana within two months.
The disciple waited for the auspicious day to arrive as told by his Guru. Then came that day from which he had to start the Sadhana procedure. The disciple was very pleased and internally motivated to attain something great in life. He started to worship the Lord sincerely by lighting ghee lamp, incense sticks, chanting the mantra before the idol etc. Soon two months was about to elapse and expecting positive outcome of his efforts, the disciple was super excited by thinking of getting a glimpse of Lord Vishnu.
However, to his utter disappointment, Lord Vishnu didn’t appear before him on that day. The disciple had full faith in his Guru and thus he continued his Sadhana. However, it appeared that Lord Vishnu had made up His mind to not to appear before the disciple.
The disciple continued the procedure for the next four months and then one day he finally quit. He went to his Guru and told him about all his efforts. The Guru smiled and consoled the disciple and said that he can try Lord Shiva’s Sadhana as Lord Shiva is a very simple God and He even ignores any shortcomings in the Sadhana. The Guru offered the disciple an idol of Lord Shiva, yantra, rosary and the secret five lettered mantra of Lord Shiva and shared the minutest details of the Sadhana. The disciple got some relief and consoled himself that may be I made some mistakes in the Sadhana due to which I didn’t get the expected results. This time, I will perform the Sadhana with more cautions and will certainly get success in it.
He removed the idol of Lord Vishnu and placed Lord Shiva’s idol over that place. Just above the place where he was worshipping, there was a slot in the wall. He took Lord Vishnu’s idol and ignorantly kept it within the slot. He started to worship Lord Shiva this time with full faith by following the Sadhana procedures of chanting the mediation mantra, lighting ghee lamp, incense sticks, chanting the mantra before the idol as per his Guru’s instructions. However, just like the last time, Lord Shiva also didn’t appear before the disciple by the end of Sadhana duration. The disciple still continue to perform the Sadhana, yet he didn’t get any success.
He didn’t lose any hope in the Sadhana and continued the Sadhana procedure sincerely for the next few months. Just like last time, one day he made up his mind to quit the Sadhana. Dejected by his failure, he went straight to his Guru and told him about his failure. The Guru once again smiled and consoled the disciple and said that he shall try Goddess Kali’s Sadhana as She is a quick pleasing Goddess in the Kaliyuga.
The Guru offered the disciple an idol of Goddess Kali, yantra, rosary and Her secret mantra along with the minutest details of the Sadhana and also initiated him with Navaarna Diksha. Even though there wasn’t any enthusiasm left in the disciple, yet he agreed to perform the Sadhana as he had full faith in his Guru and came to his home after getting all the details of the Sadhana.
The next day, he replace Lord Shiva’s idol with Goddess Kali’s idol. Just like before, he kept Lord Shiva’s idol next to Lord Vishnu’s idol in the same slot. He started to worship Goddess Kali this time with full faith. Then one day, he found that the smoke of the incense stick was going up and both the idols of Lord Vishnu and Shiva were surrounded by this smoke. The disciple thought, “These Gods are of no use. I worshipped each one of them for six months and they didn’t appease on me. And look at them now, they are inhaling the fragrance of the incense stick which I have burnt to appease Goddess Kali. Looks like they don’t want me to get success in this Sadhana too.”
Thinking of the consequences, the disciple got up quickly, took both the idols, covered the noses of the two Lords with a cloth and sat back to continue his Sadhana procedure. He was about to begin the mantra chanting, then he saw three divine figures before him. Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva and Goddess Kali were standing before him and there were clothes tied on the noses of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Lord Vishnu said, “We are pleased with your devotion. You may ask for a boon.” Perplexed, the disciple said, “I had sincerely worshipped both of you for six months but you didn’t appear before me. Now that I have removed your idols and tied clothes on your noses, you appear before me and granting me a boon. I don’t understand this.”
Listening this, Lord Shiva replied, “Till now, you were considering us just a piece of metal and not Lords. You worshipped us, meditated us, offered foods to us, but you never thought that we are alive. Today, when you tied clothes on our noses so that we don’t smell the fragrance of the incense stick, this was the first time you considered us alive and this is why your Sadhana has successfully completed today.”
The disciple was left with tears in his eyes. He was able to get success in all the three Sadhanas. He left to meet his Guru and offered his gratitude towards him. He fell into the holy feet of his Guru and prayed, “O Gurudev! You are truly great. You have made me witness Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu as well as Goddess Kali today. I will remain indebted towards you for my entire life.”
The Guru smiled and said, “It is due to the Navaarna Diksha with which I initiated you. By the means of this diksha, you were able to relate to them. Earlier, you were only considering them idols, but by the means of this diksha and mantra chanting, your consciousness developed and you started to consider them alive and nearby yourself. You are really a good disciple. I bless you a great life ahead.”
The disciple grew up to become a great Guru of his time. All this became possible by the means of devotion towards Guru, mantra, Sadhana and the Lords. His inner consciousness got awakened by means of Navaarn Diksha which made him realize that merely worshipping Gods and Goddesses will never help him in fulfilling his dreams.
