Rambola (Tulsidas) was given the Virakta Diksha (known as Vairagi initiation) and got the new name, Tulsidas. His Upanayana was performed by the Narharidas at Ayodhya when he was just of 7 years old. He started his first learning at the Ayodhya.
He mentioned in his epic the Ramcharitmanas that his guru narrated him the Ramayana over and over again. He came to the sacred city Varanasi when he was just 15–16 years old and got the knowledge of Sanskrit grammar, Hindu literature and philosophy, four Vedas, six Vedangas, Jyotisha from his guru Shesha Sanatana at the Panchaganga Ghat in Varanasi. After his study, he came back to his birthplace, Chitrakuta by the permission of his Guru. He started to live with his family and narrating the story of Ramayana.
He got married to Ratnavali and he got too much attached to her. One day, he went out leaving his wife at home. When he returned he didn’t find his wife there, she had gone to her father’s place with her brother who visited in the absence of Tulsidas. This made Tuslidas very sad. He was unable to bear the separation. He just could not sleep and live without his wife. His passionate became so uncontrollable that he at once set out for his father-in-law’s house.
He walked a long distance in the dark, through wind and rain, just to be with her. On the way he found a swollen river in the dark. But he jumped into the river and swam across it. He mistakenly took a dead body for a boat to cross the swollen river. After crossing it he reached at his father-in-law’s home. But he found all the doors closed there.
Since his wife’s room was on the upper floor, he had to climb in order to reach her room. Thinking a python to be a thick rope, he scaled it and slipped into his wife’s room.
Wife awoke at that moment. Tulsidas Goswami said, I have had to walk ten miles, in order to reach you. He expected his wife to be happy to see him and hear him. But instead, she was so ashamed of his insane attachment to her that she replied, “Yamuna is full of flood. I cannot understand how you were able to climb the house” Tulsidas replied “Your love for me is so great that you threw a rope.” Ratnavali wondered to hear that. She had full confidence on her husband that he never lied. So she herself became anxious for knowing the reality behind that happening.
She said to her husband, “Show me the rope”. She lit a lamp to look the rope through which Tulsidas climbed and reached her room. Both were surprised to see the great enormous serpent hanging down instead of rope. Though, she thought that God blessed and saved the life of her husband, however she got too much annoyed with this act of her husband and said the following verse.
Asthi Charm May Deha Yaha, Ta Son Aisi Preeti,
Neku Jo Hoti Ram Se, To Kaahe Bhav-Bheet.
You have so much attachment with this body which is nothing but bones and flesh. You would have made a better life of yours if you had the same amount of love for Lord Ram. Her words pierced his heart in a moment. He didn’t expect such harsh though correct words from her wife to him. At that very moment, Tulsidas returned from her home and renounced the world to become a saint.
He started to wonder around in his life. His desire to see Lord Ram grew each day. He started to narrate Ramayana to the general public every evening. He also had a ritual to pour down the water left after his daily routine into the roots of a babool tree. A spirit used to live on that tree which got relieved from his sins by this act of Tulsidas. He was pleased and appeared before Tulsidas and asked for a boon.
To this Tulsidas replied, “I want to see Lord Ram.” The spirit replied, “This is not possible for me. However, the poor beggar who comes to listen Ramayana daily and is the last one to leave the place, is none other than Lord Hanuman. He can definitely help you to get a glimpse of Lord Ram.”
Tulsidas was extremely pleased to hear this. He eagerly started to wait for the evening. When evening came, Tulisdas started to narrate the verses of Ramayana. At the end, when everyone left after hearing the verses, Tulsidas got up and fell at the holy feet of Lord Hanuman and shouted that I know who you are so you cannot get away leaving me. Then, Lord Hanuman blessed him a lot. Tulsidas expressed his feelings in front of Hanuman that he want to see Lord Ram. Hanuman guided him and told him to go to Chitrakuta where you would really see Lord Ram.
After getting the instructions from Lord Hanuman, Tulsidas started to live in the hermitage at Ramghat in Chitrakuta. One day when he went for making the Parikrama of the Kamadgiri mountain, he saw two princes on the horsebacks. However, he could not recognize them. Later when he acknowledged that they were Ram and Lakshman by the Hanuman, he got utterly disappointed. On the next morning, he met Ram again when he was making sandalwood paste.
Ram came to him and asked for a Tilak with sandalwood paste, in this way he had a full sight of the Ram. Tulsidas was so happy that he forgot about the sandalwood paste. Then Ram the sandalwood paste Himself and applied on His forehead and also on the Tulsidas’s forehead.
Now Tulsidas was able to understand everything as he got enlightenment from Lord Ram. And all the knowledge that he gained from his Guru started to make sense to him. And then this verse aroused from his mouth.
Main Puni Nij Gur San, Suni Katha So SookarKhet,
Samujhi Nahi Tas Baalpan Tab Ati Raheun Achet.
And then, I heard the same narrative from my Guru in SukarKhet (Varaha Kshetra, currently Kasganj). I did not understand it then, since I had no knowledge in the childhood.
That is why a Guru keeps on giving knowledge to the disciple. He knows that the disciple might not be able to understand what he is being given now, but the day the disciple gets enlightenment, all the knowledge gained over these many years becomes significant and thus helps the disciple to reach the state which he really deserves in life.
Many a times, SadGurudev mentioned that you are not understanding the worth of the diksha that I am granting to you people. Saints and ascetics remain eager to attain such dikshas in life. They serve their Gurus for many years and then only they are able to receive such dikshas in life. And I am giving you people such dikshas against the wishes of such saints and ascetics just because I am hopeful that one day you will be able to understand the worth of these dikshas.
Due to this reason only Gurudev is granting Panch Mukhi Hanuman Diksha so that Lord Hanuman can help us too in our life, just as He helped Tulsidas to fulfill his wish. Gurudev will be granting this Diksha during the period of Hanuman th Kalp (i.e., 31st March to 10 May this year). Lord Hanuman is blessed with divine powers. He is an epitome of strength, wit, knowledge, disciple and humbleness. And due to these traits he became the favorite disciple of Lord Ram.
When Lord Hanuman can kill great demons, when He can challenge Ravana in his court, when He can cross the entire ocean in a single jump, when he can help Lakshman to get out from the mouth of death, then what can be difficult for him. A person who gets initiated by this diksha gets relieved from evil spirits, gets rid from illness and gains good health, his enemies will no longer trouble him and all the tasks taken by such person gets completed in time. Then what else do we need to lead a stress free life?
