In our history there has not been another great ascetic like Shankaracharya who established four seats of spiritual energy in India. Also he wrote a great text called Shankar Bhashya. Readers were able to understand the Gita but very few are those who till date can claim to have grasped the essence of Shankar Bhashya. I have a wish to write the Shankar Bhashya in my own words in an easy language so that people could realise what Shankaracharya was trying to say. The coming generations did try to find the meanings of the words spoken by Lord Krishna but they could not get to the essence of the Gita. It is one thing to tell the meaning and another to get to the essence.
The words cannot express what the heart wants to say. When Lord Ram went to attend the Swayamvara of Sita, he was strolling with Lakshman and Guru Vishwamitra in a garden. Sita came there to worship Mother Goddess. Lord Ram looked for a moment at Sita and the famous saint Tulsidas wrote in a verse-
Jihvaa Binu Nein Nein Binu Vani
The eyes want to speak but also they cannot. The tongue can speak but it cannot see. The eyes are able to see a lot but as they cannot speak they cannot express the feeling in words. Similarly we have not been able to understand what Shankaracharya actually wanted to say through his work. I wish I find time to write the essence of this text and also of Gita. But that shall happen only when my Guru or the Lord wishes. But as a Brahmin I have true knowledge an consciousness and I feel very proud of my possessions. In fact the entire universe feels proud of this fact. Not just me the entire universe is proud that I possess such invaluable knowledge might turn into dust. I wish this knowledge to remain alive. Shankaracharya died at the age of just 32. He was so young and in these 32 years he faced so much tension and problem. And he died because of his disciple. His own disciple gave him poison and he died near Kedarnath.
And when he was breathing his last he said- Shishya (disciple) has become a dirty and hateful word. If a disciple kills the Guru he is not a disciple. It is a sin to curse a Guru. Even to think ill of a Guru is a sin. And a selfish disciple like Paadpadma killed his Guru Shankaracharya. There cannot be another more sinful disciple in this world. And Shankaracharya was much pained and he said- Shishya has become a curse.
I wish to change this. I want to prove that a disciple can be a very great person. Shishya is a very pious word. I want to prove it. It is not necessary that all disciples are like Paadpadma. May be there are a few selfish individuals but not all are same. I find pain reflected in the words of Paadpadma. Shankar died a very painful death. If he had remained alive for a few more years. If he had lived longer he would have written more texts like Shankar Bhashya. And then perhaps these words would not have poured out of his lips that Shishya is a corrupt word. But tor these thousands of years the word has remained a curse and I sincerely wish to change this, I wish to prove that there cannot be another word more pious than it. Shishya is like that heart beat of the Guru and I wish to get the true love of the disciples.
If your body touches my body then it is a great achievements for you. Not because I am a very great man. I am very ordinary. But after the death of Shankaracharya his Guru Govind paadaacharya said- Very fortunate are the people who get a chance to touch the feet of Shankaracharya. The Guru lived on but the disciple Shankar was dead. Govinda paadacharya was his Guru. Truly fortunate were the people more fortunate than even the Gods and Goddess who got a chance to touch the body of Shankaracharya, who were able to embrace him and feel his heart beats, who were able to link themselves to the soul of the Guru. There cannot be another person like Shankaracharya. This is because even an iron if it touches a Paaras (philosophers stone) turns into gold. If a piece of wood rubs with sandalwood it becomes fragrant.
Sometimes I feel whether I have done the right thing in becoming a Guru. I think whether I have done the right thing to come back to family life. Sometimes I feel very much perturbed. But then I think that this is the duty of my life. I had said earlier that those Rishis, Yogis and ascetic are useless who sit in caves. They should come here and burn in the fire of the world and give true knowledge to the people here. In jungles even wild animlals live and so do they. If they have accomplished great Sadhanas, what is the use of the same? If I call out then I am confident that thousands of disciples shall get up and come to me. This is because I have always given love in my life and I do not want any Dakshina for this. I do not want your wealth. I neither want clothes or jewels. I just need your love. There is no more valuable thing than love in life. And I wish to gift you Sadhanas and make you a great person. For this I want you to be near to me. If there is any elements of selfishness between you and me then I shall not be able to meet you.
I have a smile on my lips, I have a feeling in my heart that these are my disciples who shall come running to me when I call out to them. I know that they shall even sacrifice their lives for me. They are ready to do anything for me. I have had this experience many times in my life. I get to meet Shakaracharya form time to time in Siddhashram. I feel that he remains very much troubled in his heart. I ask him to write more texts because he has lot of knowledge. But he has been hurt and the pain is not going from his mind. Every time he tries to forget he remembers the pain. For example if someone cures you then the person might well leave but the mind shall remember the insult for many days and may be even life long. You shall feel why the person cursed you or why he did not give love to you.
And there are people who give true love. They do not meet me for months together but in their eyes their hearts the feeling remains same. It might be your compulsion that you are not able to meet me. Sometimes you have a problem and you are not able to come to me. There are compulsions in life. I well understand that. But this does not mean that one should forget and give up all feelings. You have been born for a Guru and I have been born in order to rise you to a level higher than even the Guru. It is the greatest duty of my life and this is my wish. There should be no difference of gap between you a n d me. If even then, space are between you and me then we can shove even them away and meet each other. Time cannot prevent us form meeting each other. But there should be a sense of duty, a determination to do this. One does not have control over time but we shall go on meeting each other. Last night too I visited Siddhashram and I saw the pain of Shankaracharya. Even after so many year there is a pain on his face.
I said to him I wish to change your feelings for a disciple. I want to prove that a true disciple is capable of sacrificing everything he has. I shall show this to you. I have assured him. I told him that there sure were corrupt disciples in his times and they sure are there today too. I do not say that there is no poison today in the world. There sure is but there is elixir too. May be there are some 15 or 20 bad disciples but there are thousands who are mad after me. They are ready to sacrifice themselves and all they have. They are ready to give up everything. I have seen it so many times. This is my good fortune that I stand with you today. I am a link between you and the deities. I can take you to them and I can help you gain their blessings. I want to take you to that point in life from where you could go to Siddhashram and see it.
Saafalya Roopam Bhavatam Shriyamvei
Gyaatam Sadaam Poornn-madev Tulyam
Deergho Vataam Sthool Taneiv Roopam Shthir
Madaam Va Guruvei Cha Shabdam.
In this verse Shankaracharya has revealed a very great fact which we need to understand. He has said that there is no difference between a Guru and success in Sadhanas. Where there is the Guru there is success in Sadhanas too. The difference arises when there is a gap between the Guru and the disciple. And Shankaracharya says that if there is such a difference then the Guru should remove it. The disciple does not know that there is such a difference or how it can be removed. Shankaracharya says that it is the duty of the Guru. He has tried to tell the duty of the Guru. He has not said theat there is a duty only for the disciple. He has said that it is the duty of the Guru that if the disciple makes mistakes in Sadhanas then………..
And in the present age it is well possible to make mistakes in Sadhanas. Suppose I ask you to stand on your toes and perform a Sadhana without touching the heels to the ground and then when you do the Sadhana you touch the heels two or three times. Then it sure is a mistake. If a Sadhana rule says that the heel should not touch it must not. It shall take time to raise the heel. To raise the whole foot from the ground it shall take time. It is but natural for the disciple to make mistakes. Because he is not linked to the should this is bound to happen. It is not possible to form this link all of a sudden. It is the duty of the Guru to give him success. He should surely do this. If he does not you cannot force him but he should. He should if the need be hit the disciple or love him but he should surely at every cost give him success. This is the duty of the Guru. Even if he hits there shall be a love in it. Even if he curses there shall be a love in it, a sweetness that is rare. He never hits or scolds in anger. Kabir say-
Guru Kumhar Shishya Kumbha hai Gadi Gadi Kaade Khot.
Bheetar Bheetar Sahaj Ke baahar Baahar Chot.
Even a small pot has to be hit when it is being prepared. The potter hits if from outside but gives support form within. Very slowly and carefully he gives it a shape. He gives support from within. I too keep supporting you from within but outside I appear to scold and hit at you, but even my scolding has love in it. I do not feel any happiness when I scold you. But I do want that you should have success in your life. Yesterday itself Shankaracharya was saying that the Guru should surely give a Manta to the disciple but after that it is also his duty to give success then he becomes frustrated. He does not complain that me Mantra is wrong or that he has committed some mistake but he feels hurt that he has not succeeded.
And then the disciple becomes confused but he does not say anything to the Guru. But it is the duty of the Guru to Step forward and say that he should forget about his shortcomings and mistakes and go on because he is there to give success in spite of his mistakes. I want to give you total success and prove it to the people that the Mantras and the Sadhanas are true. If someone asks you to tear a cloth then anyone can do this. There is nothing great in this task. It takes no time to tear a piece of cloth. But why should I waste my energy in this task? But a dog can only bark! It cannot chant a Mantra. Even if you try to make it will not chant. It is useless to try teaching it. Yesterday Shankaracharya was saying to me to give the disciples and Sadhakas knowledge that there should not remain any shortcoming in their Sadhanas. If there is a shortcoming it shall be there. But to still give success is something of a paradox. I want a situation that you should be able to get success whether or not you speak out the Mantra correctly.
What should be done to have such a situation?
This is a very tough task. If I ask you to stand in a particular posture and you bend your knees after just eight rounds of Mantra chanting saying that just eight are enough when actually ten are required then you cannot get success. You might think that it is impossible to fly in the sky through there power of Mantras. You might well consider this impossible. And your thoughts make you doubtful. Lord Hanuman never had any airplane When he reached Lanka he was not flying in a jet. He just flew like a bird. How did he do this? Either the ancient texts are false or we are wrong. Even through an airplane one can fly. But one can fly without any aid too. Just fifty years ago the saint of Varanasi, Vishuddhanand, showed how one could do this. But after this he never sat back in peace. Any disciple who came to his home would ask him to show the amazing feat. He thought that he had made a mistake that he had shown his powers.
I always give the most precious pearls. Sadhanas are the treasure of your life. I bless you.
