Her ten hands are holding scimitar, disk, mace, arrows and bow, lance, club, a skull and a conch shell. She is a Goddess with three eyes, She wears ornaments that covers Her body, and Her face is filled with the brilliance of blue diamonds. We offer our reverence to Goddess MahaKali, the one whom Brahma praised for protection from the demons Madhu and Kaitava, when Lord Vishnu was in sleep.
Long ago there was a king named Suratha, born of the Chitra dynasty, ruling over the whole world. He protected his people just like his own children. The king was attacked by powerful enemies & even in his own city, the king was robbed of his treasury & army by his own powerful & evil ministers. Deprived of his kingdom, the king left alone on horse into a dense jungle.
He saw there the hermitage that had many wild animals roaming peacefully along with the disciples of the sage. The sage welcomed Suratha & offered him to spend his time in the hermitage. Suratha agreed to the offer & started to stay in the hermitage serving the great sage. One day his thoughts were overpowered with his attachment towards his family & he started thinking, “I do not know whether the kingdom that was so well reigned by my ancestors is now well guarded by the evil ministers or not. Those who were my constant followers & received food, favors & riches from me, must now be penalised by the new king. Whether the treasure I gathered with great care is now being spent on useful activities or not.”
The king’s thoughts remain deeply engrossed in these feelings. Soon, the king found a man walking towards the hermitage & asked him: “Who are you? Why are you here? You look to be filled with grief & depression?” Hearing the king, the man replied, “I am a merchant named Samadhi & was born in a wealthy family. I have been thrown out of my home & all the possessions have been snatched away by my sons & wife. Wandering here, I am not able to think about anything else than about the know-how of my family members. How are they now? Are my sons living a good life or they are suffering?”
Listening to these words from the merchant, the king asked, “Why is your mind still so much inclined towards those people who have deprived you of your own wealth & have made you suffer so much in life?” The merchant said, “This very thought struck me the moment you said those words.
What can I do as I am not able to control my mind. I still bear a deep affection towards those who have driven me out of my home as a result of their greed for wealth. My sons have abandoned the love for their father & my wife has broken my faith. How it is that the mind is inclined for love even towards worthless people? What can I do get rid of the feelings of those unloving people?
The merchant & the king together approached the sage & after offering him their reverence, they sat down & shared the matter with him. The king said, “Great soul, I wish to ask you one thing & please shower your wisdom up on us. I am not able to control my intellect, my mind is afflicted with sorrow. Though I have lost the kingdom, I am still attached to all the people of my kingdom. And this merchant has been thrown out of his own house by his children & wife, yet he has a great affection towards them. Thus, both of us are exceedingly unhappy due to our attachment towards the people who have cheated on us.
Even though we are aware of our situation why are we still inclined towards those people?” The sage smiled & said, “Every living being in this world has identifies the objects by their senses. Some beings are blind during the day, & others are blind by night, some living beings are blessed to see both during day & night. Human beings are certainly blessed with knowledge, but they are not the only beings as even birds, animals & other creatures also possess the senses.
The knowledge that human beings possess are also present in birds & animals, and what they have, human beings also possess. Activities like eating & sleeping are common to both. Look at these birds, even though they possess knowledge & are themselves impacted by hunger but because of the delusion are engaged in dropping grains into the beaks of their young ones. Human beings are attached to their children because of greed for return help.
Do you not see this?
Even so human beings are trapped into the maze of attachment, through the power of Mahamaya, who makes the existence of the world possible. This Mahamaya is the Yoga nidra of Lord Vishnu, the Lord of the world. It is by her presence that the entire world is in an illusion. Truly, She forcibly draws the attention of even the wisest of human beings & throws them into illusion. She creates this entire universe, both moving & unmoving. It is She who, when favorable, becomes a boon-giver to human beings for their final liberation. She is the supreme knowledge, the cause of final liberation; She is the cause of the bondage of transmigration & the greatest of all the Gods.”
The king said, “Revered sage, who is that Goddess whom you call Mahamaya? How did she come into being, & what is her sphere of action? What is her nature? What is her form? How did she originate? I wish to learn all this from you.”
The sage replied, “She is eternal & what all we observe is because of Her & She incarnates in many ways. When She manifests herself in order to accomplish the purposes of the Gods, she is said to be born in the world, though she is eternal. Once Lord Vishnu was sleeping & changed his position when two terrible demons, Madhu & Kaitabha, manifested from the dirt of His ears & decided to kill Lord Brahma. Seeing these two fierce demons & Lord Vishnu asleep, Lord Brahma requested Yoga nidra, residing in Lord Vishnu’s eyes.
Lord Brahma said, “Dear Goddess, you are the nectar. This universe is borne by you & by you this world is created. You are the protector, & you always consume it at the end. You are the entire world. You are the creative force at the time of creation, You are the preserver at the time of nurturing, & You are the destructive power at the time of the dissolution. You are the supreme knowledge as well as the great ignorance, the great delusion, the great Devi & also the great Asuri.
You are the prime cause of everything, bringing into force the three qualities. You are the dark night of periodic dissolution. You are the Goddess of good fortune, modesty, intelligence, nourishment, & contentment. You possess sword, spear, club, discus, conch, bow, arrows, slings & iron mace, you are frightening & at the same time you are pleasing, You are more pleasing than all the pleasing things & exceedingly beautiful. You are indeed the supreme Goddess, beyond the high and low.
Even he who creates, sustains & devours the world, is put to sleep by You. Who is capable enough to praise your virtues, who have made us – Vishnu, myself & Shiva – take our forms? Dear Goddess, bring an end to these two devils – Madhu & Kaitabha, with your superior powers. Let Vishnu be quickly awakened from sleep & slay these two great demons.”
Listening to the outcry of Lord Brahma, the Goddess drew herself out from the eyes, mouth, nostrils, arms, heart & breast of Lord Vishnu & appeared before Brahma. When the Goddess came out of Lord Vishnu’s body, He suddenly got awakened & rose up and saw the two devils eager to kill Lord Brahma. Lord Vishnu fought with these devils for five thousand years, however the war was inconclusive. Under the guidance of Goddess Mahamaya, Lord Vishnu complimented the two demons saying they are great warriors & could grant them any boon. Under the delusion of great Goddess, the two demons became arrogant and considered themselves greater than Him. Thus, in pride they instead told Lord Vishnu for any boon. With a smile on his face, Lord Vishnu thus said, “You must both be killed by me now.”
The two demons then thought for a moment and told Lord Vishnu, “Kill us at the spot where the earth is not flooded with water.” At that time the world had not taken shape fully, because Brahma had not commenced his job of creation. The world was covered fully with water. So, the asuras had assumed that killing them where there was no water would be impossible. The Lord took the huge form of Hayagriva & pulled earth out of water and killed the two demons. Thus, with the help of Goddess Mahamaya, Lord Vishnu brought an end to these two demons.”
The sage then continued, “This is all an illusion created by Goddess Mahamaya due to which you people still feel inclined towards the people who have deserted you & have wiped you out of your worldly possessions. It is thus utmost important to appease the Goddess to bring an end to all the miseries of your life.”
The above story showcases how we human beings remain so connected with worldly pleasures & those whom we are attached to. All of us are under a great delusion as all those whom we consider as our own are actually nothing but an illusion. This illusion is so strong that a person alone can’t get out of this maze. We need the powers of Goddess to help us get out of our miseries, pains & sufferings as She alone can help us break this shackle.
Of all the forms of the Goddess, Goddess Kali is the most compassionate because She provides nirvana or liberation to Her children. She is the counterpart of Lord Shiva, the destroyer. Incarnation day of Goddess Kali is a great day to appease Her and get Her blessings in life. Goddess Kali is the one who possesses control over Kal or time. Any person who appeases Goddess Kali is also able to make the time favorable for himself.
