Diksha on the occasion of MahaShiv Ratri
Long, long ago a brahman decided to offer a feast for his ancestors and bought a goat to sacrifice. “My boys,” he said to his students, “take this goat down to the river, bathe it, brush it, hang a garland around its neck, give it some grain to eat and bring it back. Today I am going to sacrifice this goat for my ancestors.”
“Yes, sir,” they replied and took the goat to the river. While they were grooming it, the goat started to burst out laughing. Then, just as strangely, it started to weep loudly all of a sudden. The young students were amazed at this behavior and asked the goat “Why did you suddenly laugh and why do you now cry out so loudly?” “Repeat your question when we get back to your teacher.,” the goat answered.
The students hurriedly took the goat back to their master and told him what had happened at the river. Hearing the story, the master was left astonished. He himself asked the goat why it had laughed and why it had wept.
“In times past, the goat began, “I was a brahman who taught the Vedas like you. I too sacrificed a goat as an offering for a feast for my beloved ancestors. Because of killing that single goat, I have had taken 500 births and my head has been cut off 499 times in my previous lives. I laughed aloud when I realized that this is my last birth as an animal to be sacrificed. Today I will be free from my sin. On the other hand, I cried when I realized that, because of killing me, you too, may be doomed to lose your head five hundred times. It was out of pity for you that I cried out.”
“Well, goat,” said the brahman, “in that case, I am not going to kill you and will free you.” “Brahman!” exclaimed the goat. “Whether you kill me or not, I cannot escape from death today. I am destined to die today and get free of my sins.” “Don’t worry,” the brahman assured the goat. “I and my students will guard you and ensure that no one will kill you.” “You don’t understand,” the goat told him. “Your protection is weak. The force of my evil deed is very strong and the fate has already been written. Nothing can change that now.”
The brahman untied the goat and ordered his students to follow the goat and protect it. After the goat was freed, it began to graze. It stretched out its neck to reach the leaves on a bush growing near the top of a large rock. At that very instant a lightning bolt hit the rock, breaking off a sharp piece of stone which flew through the air and neatly cut off the goat’s head. A crowd of people gathered around the dead goat and began to talk excitedly about the amazing accident. rawing a lesson from the incident, admonished the crowd: “If people knew that the penalty would be rebirth into sorrow, they would cease from taking life. With this explanation of the Law of Karma the God instilled in his listeners the fear of hell. The people were so frightened that they completely gave up the practice of animal sacrifice. God further instructed the people in the precepts and urged them to do good.
This small story tells us that it is our karma which decides a lot about our current life. We can see around that there are people who are very successful, who are bestowed with fortune even though they are not very hard working. We can see smart people around us who gets things done much quickly than the other people around. We can see that few people have been blessed with a great financial support whereas some of us even find it difficult to manage the very basic necessities of life. We can see that there are few people who are blessed with very sharp mind whereas some of us have to put very conscious efforts to even learn small things.
This is all because this entire universe is governed by the law of karma. Sometimes we see that a person have to suffer from major diseases like cancer due to alcohol consumption . Such situations are still manageable through proper medication. The reason behind this is that the person knows the reason behind his misery. On the other hand, none of us are capable enough to look into our past lives and conclude the reason behind our misery. In such situation, only a Guru can bless and set his disciple free from all the sins.
However, this is not an easy task. The Guru has to take over all the sins of His beloved disciple on Himself and thus removes the burden of sins from the life of the disciple. This process ensures that the disciple lives a blessed and successful life, however this process also means that the Guru has to bear the burden of all the sins that the disciple has committed in his previous lives. This process sucks out a lot of energy out of the Guru and is a very painful process for Him.
Lord Shiva and Guru
It has been mentioned in the holy texts that Guru-disciple relationship was started by lord Shiva and Guru is the form of Lord Shiva himself, if a person sees any difference between Guru and Lord Shiva is a great sinner. Lord Shiva is the only God who lives a life of a yogi as well as a complete householder.
He has a wife, two great sons Ganpati and Kartikeya, He has lots of Ganas to follow his orders and yet He is found in graveyard. This trait of His can be seen in Guru too. A Guru may be surrounded by lots of flashy things, yet he never gets soaked within these worldly things and always remains busy in the betterment of this world as well as his disciples.
MahaShiva Ratri and Guru
MahaShiva Ratri is the day when Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati got married. It has been mentioned in Purans that during one of the marriage ceremonies, Lord Shiva was asked to recite the name of His Father. Lord Brahma stood up and said I am His father. Then Lord Shiva was asked to recite the name of His Grandfather. On this, Lord Vishnu stood up and said, I am His grandfather. Then Lord Shiva was asked the name of His great grandfather. No one among the Gods could standup now. After seeing everyone dumb stuck, Lord Shiva said, I am the great grandfather of everyone sitting here.
This incident proves that Lord Shiva is the God who existed before the creation of this entire universe. Lord Shiva is the one who is associated to Simplicity, Forgiveness, Greatness and the one who bestows fortune to His followers. Lord Shiva is the one who fulfills all the desires of His followers. And the best day to appease Lord Shiva is MahaShiva Ratri only. One can perform any sadhana on this day and get success in them.
