There are two incidents that come before us related to the benevolent Lord. Long time back, there was a demon Hiranya-kashayapu who wished to defeat Lord Vishnu and for that he set out for jungles for penance. While he was in his deep penance, Indra attacked his kingdom and destroyed it. After several years of hard penance, Lord Brahma finally appeared before Hiranyakashayapu.
What he saw there stumped Lord Brahma. Hiranya-kashayapu was so deep in his penance that creepers had grown on him. Lord Brahma was touched with the devotion of Hiranya-kashayapu. He took some water from his Kamandalam and threw it on Hiranyakashayapu.
Slowly Hiranya-kashayapu got up from his trance. He looked at the God of Creation and bowed, ‘My Lord!’ Lord Brahma looked at Hiranya-kashayapu and said, ‘Arise son! Your penance is unparalleled! You can have any boon you wish!’ Hiranya-kashayapu bowed and said, ‘My Lord! I wish to be immortal.’ Lord Brahma looked unhappily at him and shook his head, ‘Son, all who are born have to die. I cannot change the laws of nature. Please ask for something else.’
Hiranya-kashayapu thought quickly and again bowed to Lord Brahma. ‘Lord, I wish for a boon.’ Lord Brahma gestured for Hiranyakashayapu to continue. Hiranya-kshayapu spoke in clear tones, ‘Lord I wish that I cannot be killed by any man, God or animal or any other creature created by you. Nobody should be able to kill me at day or night, in heavens or in earth, in the day or the night either inside the house or outside the house, or with any weapons.’ When Lord Brahma heard this he stayed still for some time. He knew that granting this boon was not good considering that Hiranya-kashapu had shown utter contempt for all other lives. But he also knew that he had no choice. He had to grant whatever was asked of him. Hiranyakashayapu’s penance had been very powerful. He said, ‘So be it Hiranyakashayapu! Your wish has been granted.’
Saying thus Lord Brahma vanished from there. Hiranyakashayapu overjoyed with the boon ran back to his kingdom. He was hurt to see that most of them were destroyed by the attack of Indra. To avenge himself, Hiranyakashayapu attacked Indra and the Devas were driven out of Devaloka. Hiranyakashayapu became the ruler of the Heavens. Hiranyakashayapu started to torment the humans and the Devas alike, but no one was able to raise a voice against him. It was at this time that his wife, Kayadu gave birth to a fine young baby boy – he was named Prahlad.
Prahlad was quiet different from his father. He was a strong devotee of Lord Vishnu and liked praying LordVisnu. While everyone was scared of Hiranya-kashayapu, all people loved Prahlad. Hiranya-kashayapu once asked Prahlad to come and sit on his lap. He lovingly stroked Prahlad’s hair, ‘Son! What a fine son you are! Tell me son, how are things going in your school? ”Father!’ Prahlad looked at his father lovingly, ‘I have learnt that Vishnu – the Dark Lord is the Ruler of the Three worlds and that if we are devoted to him, he will always be there for us.’ Hiranya-kashayapu got angry and sent for the boy’s teacher. When the teacher appeared, Hiranya-kashayapu yelled at the teacher.
However, Prahlad continued to worship Lord Vishnu. Hiranya-kashayapu got more and more furious as he heard this. Anger blinded him, he thought that this boy can’t be his son. Hiranyakashayapu called his men and ordered to kill Prahlad. The guards struck Prahlad only to find their blades breaking off even before it struck Prahlad. Bewildered they turned to Hiranyakashayapu.
Enraged he then ordered Prahlad to be bitten by poisonous snakes. However the bites of the snake did not affect Prahlad at all. He even tried to kill Prahlad with the help of a mad elephant and his sister, Holika, but all in vain.
Now he got so angry that he went to kill the boy himself. He said to him, ‘You say your Vishnu is everywhere?’ He yelled, ‘Where is your Vishnu now? Is he is this pillar?’ Hiranyakashayapu yelled loudly. Prahald looked at his father straight in the eye, ‘Yes father! Lord Vishnu is everywhere.’ Enraged Hiranya-kashayapu striked the pillar and was left stunned to see that the pillar shatterd into pieces and a ferocious figure emerged from the pillar. What is that? It has the face of a lion and the body of the man.
Hiranya-kashayapu hastily stepped back, looking at the half man-half lion form. It jumped upon Hiranya-kashayapu and grasped His hands. Hiranya-kashayapu struggled against grip, but it was of no use. Lord Narasingh took him and dragged him to the threshold of the door [neither inside nor outside the house] and placed him on his lap [neither sky nor the earth] and there killed Hiranya-kashayapu with his claws [without weapons], at twilight [neither day nor night].
After killing Hiranya-kashayapu, Narasingh let out a loud roar and sat on Hiranya-kashayapu’s throne. All the Asuras escaped from there seeing the ferocious beast. Even the Devas were afraid to go near Narasingh. However unafraid, Prahlad went forward. ‘My Lord! You have come to protect me. I knew you would come. ‘Yes son! I came for you , said Lord Narsingh.
Adi Shankaracharya & Lord Narsingh
Narasingh is also a protector of his devotees in times of danger. Near Sri Sailam, there is a forest called Hatakesvanam, that no man enters. Shankaracharya entered this place and did penance for many days. During this time, a Kapalika, by name Kirakashan appeared before him. He told Shankaracharya that he should give his body as a human-sacrifice to mother Kali.
Shankaracharya happily agreed. His disciples were shocked to hear this and pleaded with Shankaracharya to change his mind, but he refused to do so saying that it was an honor to give up his body as a sacrifice for Kali and one must not lament such things. The Kapalika arranged a fire for the sacrifice and Shankaracharya sat beside it. Just as he lifted his axe to severe the head of Shankaracharya, Lord Narasingh entered the body of Padpadam, devotee of lord Narasingh and disciple of Shankaracharya. He then fought and killed Kapalika. Shankaracharya soon composed the powerful Lakshmi-Narasingh Karavalambam Stotra in front of Lord Narasingh.
The above two incidents explains us that Lord Narsingh is not only a granter of wisdom and faith but also a granter of fearlessness in life. He is the one who can Himself appear before His devotee and thrash their enemies or He can even enable His devotee by appearing within them and thus enabling them to become NarKeshri in life. Below Sadhana is one such Sadhana by which a person can himself become a form of Lord Narsingh by placing Him within the body and thus gaining all the traits of Lord Narsingh.
Sadhana Procedure:
Perform this sadhana on Narsingh Jayanti i.e., on 20-May-2016, or on any Tuesday after 9 pm. Take a bath and get into fresh red clothes and sit on a red colored woolen mat facing West. One needs a NarsinghYantra and Narsinghi Rosary.
Worship the yantra with vermillion and rice grains. Now light an oil lamp and just chant one round of the mantra below. One must chant the mantra with slightly loud pronunciation and in a bit angry mood, just like lion roars.
One might feel extremely energized during the sadhana procedure, some might feel getting over raged, which just indicates that the sadhana is heading towards success. If someone wishes to get rid of some specific issue or wishes to win over an enemy, then write the name of that person with lamp black on a piece of paper and place it below the yantra prior to mantra chanting. Drop all the articles in a river or pond after completing the sadhana. One can also perform this sadhana in groups, however each member must use separate sadhana articles.
A powerful and wise man neither attacks someone nor accepts someone’s attack. A lion normally stays calm, however when enraged possesses the power to even destroy the entire jungle. Similar to that, an accomplished sadhak of this sadhana attains the power to destroy even his most powerful enemies just like Lord Narsinga destroyed Hiranyakashayapu. The real beauty of life is when we possess that power all our oppositions just surrender before us by hearing our single roar i.e., by just our single fierce glance.
It is mandatory to obtain Guru Diksha from Revered Gurudev before performing any Sadhana or taking any other Diksha.
