If the entire ocean is converted into an ink pot and all the trees are used as pen and even if Goddess Shaardaa devotes Her entire life in writing your virtues, still it is impossible to inscribe all your virtues.
Lord Shiva is the God of Gods and is considered as the first God. As per ShwetaaShwetaropanishada in the beginning of this universe, there was darkness everywhere, there was no day or night, neither good or bad, but only the unwavering Lord Shiva (Rudra) existed at that time. As per Mahabharat, Lord Shiva has been termed as the one who is the creator of Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu. Due to this reason, He is also called as Mahadev, greatest amongst the Gods.
Lord Shiva loves to live in isolation, and He emerged as a Yogi. Lord Shiva is the king of all the yogis. His form is remarkable; His entire personality depicts something important. His long golden flowing hair is a symbol of His omnipresence, Ganges symbolizes demolition of sins, moon symbolizes elixir, snake in His neck represents death and on which Lord Shiva has attained full control and is thus known as MahaMrityunjaya.
The three marks on His forehead, Tripund, symbolizes the three nerves – Ida, Pingala & Sushumna. The third eye is the symbol of activated Aagya Chakra. The trident in his hand shows Lord Shiva can eradicate all the three sufferings of life – related to body, caused by Gods and troubles of society. Damru in His hands represent the sound of the Brahma, Kamandala depicts the centralization of entire universe, lion skin symbolizes keeping our mind under full control. His vehicle, Nandi, is the symbol of Dharma and as Lord Shiva sits on him, Lord Shiva is also called as Dharmeshwara. The ash on His body signifies mortality of this world.
The combination of Shiva and Shakti represents completeness. If we remove the symbol (ि ) from Shiva (शिव ), it becomes (शव ) meaning a corpse. In other words, Lord Shiva became complete only after getting united with Goddess Shakti, else He is just like a dead being. This amalgamated form of Lord Shiva and Goddess Shakti is known as ArdhaNarishwar. According to Shaiva philosophy, this represents the combined form of Brahma and soul and explains duality. In this form, the right half part of the body is of Lord Shiva and the left half is of Goddess Parvati.
On Shiva’s part, there exists long hair, garland of snake, snake earring, lion skin, trident etc. On Goddess Parvati’s part there exists crown, beautiful clothes, glittering jewellery, etc. Another form of Lord Shiva is HariHar, a combination of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. This is the symbol of nurturing and destruction and continuous development of human life. Lord Shiva contains the three virtues – in the form of Brahma He creates, in the form of Vishnu He nurtures and, in His Rudra form, He destructs. Combined form of all three is known as Mahadev. Due to this reason, He is termed as HariHar Pitaamaha. As per Atharva Veda, Lord Shiva is also known as HariHar HiranyaGarbha i.e. Lord Shiva is the unified form of Brahma, Vishnu and Sun. By just worshiping Lord Shiva, a person worships all the Gods and Goddesses. What all we see is Shiva, what all is happening is Shiva…this entire world has the essence of Shiva.
Even though He is Nirvikar (one who is calm, pure and without any vices), He is engrossed in the well being of this world that is full of vices (Vikar). He lives at the Uttang peak of Kailash mountains in Shankar Dham that is devoid of any problems, pain or sufferings. He is free from clutches of death and is the one who can help a person win over death. He is stable and pious, yet He is present in every atom of this universe. Due to this reason, Lord Shiva is omnipresent , He is Shankar and is Abhayankar.
The meaning of word Shiva is pious, welfare…Lord Shiva is ever eager to provide completeness to the devotees because Shiva can provide both Bhoga (worldly pleasures) & Moksha (nirvana). Shiva is Aughardani who instantly gets pleased by His devotees and provide them fearlessness. He is Ashutosha, the one who fulfill all the desires of His devotees. Due to this reason our holy texts have mentioned Bhogashcha Mokshacha Karastha Aeva for Lord Shiva. When Bhishma Pitamaha was asked about Lord Shiva, all he mentioned was
Ashktoham Gunaan Vaktum MahaaDevasya Dheematah |
Yo Hi Sarvagato Devo Na Cha Sarvatra Drishayate ||
Lord Shiva is omnipresent yet He is not visible, I am unable to explain the virtues of that Mahadev.
