This news was good enough for Shyam to make him curious enough to head towards the mountains. One day he finally left to see those saints and on his way he heard someone calling his name from the top of the mountains. His curiosity even grew stronger as who could be this person who is calling him by the name. He was relatively very new to this place and how can someone living on this mountain call him by his name. So he started to climb up the mountains. The day was about to finish and the evening was just approaching, yet Shyam was anxious to fulfil his curiosity. Eventually he came up to a clean and well-kept cave at the top of the mountain. A tall, radiant, divinely figured saint was standing there. It appeared as if this divine figure was standing here to greet him.
Laughing warmly, the saint told Shyam, “I was calling you. I am the one who gave this thought to your officer to transfer you to this place.” He asked Shyam to follow him into the cave. Pointing to a mat, the saint asked, “Do you recognize this mat”? Shyam was dumbstruck at this question and the more he looked at the smiling face of the saint, the more the place appeared acquainted to him. The saint touched Shaym’s forehead and caressed it with affection. Suddenly it appeared to him as if he has awoke from a deep sleep. He could now realize that it was his own place of Sadhana and the mat belonged to him. How familiar this cave was! And how extraordinary was this great saint standing close to him, he was none other than this Guru. It all came back to him – how he became an ascetic and his Guru guided him to get absorbed in sadhanas in this very place. Later he left his body. Overwhelmed by remembering all this, Shyam collapsed in the holy feet of his Guru and immediately begged to receive complete shelter in him. Gurudev’s tranquil words of consolation and solace brought some relief to Shyam.
Though he didn’t want to return to his family life after realizing the truth about him, however upon his SadGuru’s instructions, he returned back to his Ranikhet office. He began attending various meets organized by his Guru. Administering medicine and proper nutrition and gradually bringing Shyam to a pure and healthy state, the saint sat him down on his own mat and initiated him in the rare and priceless path of Kriya Yog. The dust and dullness of consciousness disappeared and the radiance of divine knowledge appeared. His initiation was complete!
This was not only a sacred moment for him but also for the humankind. It was beginning of recovering the lost treasure. So many thirsty men and women would now find a place to quench their yearning with the rejuvenating water of life. That holy moment was a hidden event, unseen by people in an undiscovered and secret cave. For beings praying for shelter, for the distressed and desperate, for the sincere seekers, the powerful seed of the tree that would give them shade in the future was planted with the greatest care and love.
Pure and sanctified Shyam sat on the sacred mat and began to ascend the different levels of Pranayam Kriya Yoga, experiencing world of different wonders. The outward bound senses were withdrawn and rested within; he became immersed in beatific awareness. How time disappeared, where was the office, where was his domestic life? Coming out of his meditation, he straightaway fell in his Guru’s feet and begged to remain in this Divine presence, forever. The SadGuru lovingly embraced his disciple and said to him that he would still have to fulfil his worldly duties for a few more years and he has to flourish the Kriya Yoga in this world. Knowing his responsibilities, Shyam reverently bowed down in his Guru’s feet and orders. He asked how and when can he meet his Guru again. To this the Guru replied, “Whenever you will think of me, I will be there!”
This disciple was no other than Shyam Charan Lahiri, also popular in history as Lahiri Mahashaya. He was a great yogi and is now a saint of Siddhashram. Initially his Guru had put severe restriction on whom to initiate. He had permitted Lahiri Mahashaya to initiate only those people who has obtained certain high qualities in the Kriya Yoga Sadhana. He also guided him that only those who is willing to give everything into the holy feet of Guru should be revealed the secret of this Sadhana. The compassionate heart of Lahiri Mahashaya cried out to his SadGuru, “If You have bestowed your grace upon me, then I beg for you to bestow even more grace for all people, without any distinction, that they may also be blessed with this rarest Sadhana. Listening to such words from his disciple the SadGuru said, “So shall it be.” He said that the aspirant shall give at least 5 rupees as a symbolic offering of physical penance.
Returning back to his domestic life, Lahiri Mahashaya used to mainly talk about the sages he met in the mountains, about his Guru and his amazing powers. However most of the people around him used to consider it a lie. One day while he was having a discussion with his friends, they openly disagreed to his views and points. They asked him that if there is something like this, then they will believe it only if he proves it to them. Listening to their words, Lahiri Mahashaya asked everyone to go out of the room and to leave him alone for some time. Then he meditated to his Guru and the Guru appeared before him. When Lahiri Mahashaya told his Guru that he has called to prove his friends about his Guru’s ability, the Guru first got annoyed. However, when Lahiri Mahashaya told him that he was sorry for his deed and just wanted to prove his existence, the Guru became ready to come in front of his friends.
Looking at another person coming out of the room perplexed Lahiri Mahashaya friends, yet they thought that may be it is a ghost. So to again correct them, some sweets were prepared and was offered to the Guru. The benevolent Guru accepted the food and the remaining was distributed to all. Then the Guru finally disappeared saying to Lahiri Mahashaya that from now on, he will appear only when Lahiri Mahashaya will need him. Later Lahiri Mahashaya became a great Guru and was the key member in flourishing the Kriya Yoga and keeping it alive for the benefit of all the human kind.
