एक बार विश्वामित्र अपनी विशाल सेना के साथ अपने राज्य के बाहर भ्रमण करने के लिए निकले। मार्ग में एक जंगल मिला जिसे पार करते समय उसने जो दृश्य देखा, उसे देख कर वह विस्मय में पड़ गये। उन्होनें देखा कि शेर और हिरण दोनों एक साथ ऐसे घूम रहे हैं जैसे वे दोनों परम मित्र हो। उन्हें ऐसा महसूस हुआ जैसे वहां चारों ओर प्रेम का वातावरण हो। थोड़ी ही देर में उसे मार्ग में एक आश्रम दिखा।
वह आश्रम ऋषि वशिष्ट का था। यह उनका ही तेज था जिसके कारण उस जंगल में खूंखार जानवर भी शांत स्वभाव के हो गये थे। वशिष्ट ने राजा का पूर्ण स्वागत किया और उसे बैठने के लिए आसन प्रदान किया। बातों-बातों में वशिष्ट को पता चला कि राजा के साथ एक बड़ी सेना भी थी। इस पर वशिष्ट ने राजा को उसकी सेना के साथ भोजन ग्रहण करने का आग्रह किया। राजा ने मन ही मन सोचा कि इस जंगल में यह ऋषि इतने लोगों को कैसे भोजन करा पाएंगे। मेरे साथ तो इतनी विशाल सेना और हाथी-घोड़े भी हैं, भला एक गरीब साधू इतना भोजन कहां से ला पाएगा। ऐसा सोच कर उसने वशिष्ट को मना किया पर वशिष्ट के बारम्बार आग्रह करने पर उसने आमंत्रण को स्वीकार कर लिया।
वशिष्ट के आश्रम में नंदिनी नाम की एक गाय थी जो कि कामधेनु की पुत्री थी। वशिष्ट को यह गाय इंद्र ने भेंट की थी। वशिष्ट नंदिनी के पास पहुंचे और उससे आग्रह किया, ‘हे माता! राजा विश्वामित्र अपनी सेना के साथ हमारे आश्रम में अतिथि बन कर आये हैं। उनका सत्कार करना हमारा कर्तव्य है। कृपया कर सबके भोजन का प्रबंध करें’।
कुछ ही क्षण में वहां स्वादिष्ट व्यंजनों का ढेर लग गया। दूध, फ़ल, सूखे मेवे, शहद, पकवान आदि जिसने जिस भी चीज की कामना की वह सामने प्रस्तुत हो गई। सभी ने डट के भोजन किया और सभी पूर्ण संतुष्ट हुए। स्वयं विश्वामित्र ने यह सब कुछ बहुत गौर से देखा और मन ही मन सोचा कि इस घने जंगल में वशिष्ट इतने उच्चकोटि के व्यंजन का प्रबंध कैसे कर सके।
जब यह जिज्ञासा राजा के नियंत्रण की हद पार कर गई तो उसने वशिष्ट से पूछा कि उसने इतने कम समय में इतने उच्चकोटि के भोजन का प्रबन्ध कैसे किया? इस पर वशिष्ट ने उसे नंदिनी के बारे में सब बताया। नंदिनी के बारे में सुन कर राजा के मन में विचार आया, कि इस जंगल में रहने वाले साधू को इस गाय की क्या आवश्यकता है? ऐसा सोच कर उसने वशिष्ट के सामने प्रस्ताव रखा कि वह उसे वह गाय दे दे और बदले में उसे जो भी चाहिए राजा उसे वह सहर्ष भेंट में प्रदान कर देगा। ऐसा सुन कर वशिष्ट बोले, ‘हे राजन्! यह गाय मुझे भेंट में मिली है। यह मुझे मेरे पूजन, यज्ञ, हवन आदि में सहायता प्रदान करती है। इसके अतिरिक्त यह मेरे अतिथियों की सेवा में मेरी सहायता करती है। यह मेरी एकमात्र संपत्ति है, मैं इसे आपको कैसे दे सकता हूं’?
वशिष्ट ने यह सुन कर कहा, ‘भला एक साधु के पास इतनी दुलर्भ चीज का क्या महत्व है। ऐसी दुर्लभ चीज तो एक राजा के पास ही होनी चाहिए। यह गाय आप मुझे दे दें’। वशिष्ट के पुनः इन्कार करने पर राजा को क्रोध आ गया। भला एक राजा इन्कार सुन भी कैसे सकता था! उसने मन ही मन सोचा की इस तरह याचना करने से कोई लाभ नहीं। यदि मैं यह गाय इस साधू से छीन भी लूं तो यह भला मेरा क्या बिगाड़ लेगा?
ऐसा सोच कर उसने अपने सैनिकों को आज्ञा दी कि इस गाय को रस्सी से बांध कर घसीटे हुए ले चलो। राजा की आज्ञा के अनुसार सैनिकों ने नंदिनी को रस्सी से बांध दिया और उसे खींचने लगे। जब यह दर्द असहनीय हो गया तो नंदिनी रस्सी को तोड़ कर दौड़ते हुए वशिष्ट के पास पहुंची और रक्षा की याचना करने लगी। इस पर वशिष्ट ने हुंकार करते हुए अपने तप बल से सैंकड़ों सशस्त्र सैनिक प्रकट किये और उन्होंने विश्वामित्र की सेना को क्षण भर में ही समाप्त कर दिया।
निराश और क्रोधित विश्वामित्र अपने महल वापस पहुंचे और अपने सौ पुत्रों को आज्ञा दी कि वो जाएं और जा कर वशिष्ट को पराजित करें और उस गाय को ले कर आएं। वशिष्ट विश्वामित्र के पुत्रों के आक्रमण से अत्यंत क्रोधित हुए और उनके इस क्रोध से एक भयंकर ज्वाला निकली जिसने उन सबको जला कर राख कर दिया। यह खबर जब विश्वामित्र तक पहुंची तो वह शोक में डूब गए पर उनका क्रोध अब भी शांत नहीं हुआ था। विश्वामित्र ने मन ही मन सोचा कि वशिष्ट के तपोबल के कारण ही मैं अपनी सेना और अपने पुत्रों को खो बैठा हूं। हमारा सारा शौर्य बेकार ही था उसके सामने। मुझे भी वशिष्ट की तरह ही तपस्या करनी चाहिए और उसी के समान बलवान बनना चाहिए। ऐसा निश्चय कर के विश्वामित्र अपना राजपाट छोड़ कर जंगल की ओर निकल पड़े।
विश्वामित्र ने हिमालय पहुंच कर एकांत में एक स्थान ढूंढा और उसने भगवान शिव को प्रसन्न करने के लिए अपनी तपस्या शुरु कर दी। हजारों वर्जों की कठोर तपस्या के बाद भी भगवान शिव प्रसन्न नहीं हुए, पर विश्वामित्र ने हार नहीं मानी और निरंतर कठोर से कठोर तपस्या करते रहे। एक दिन अंततः भगवान शिव प्रसन्न हुए और उन्होंने विश्वामित्र से वरदान मांगने के लिए कहा – विश्वामित्र की प्रसन्नता का कोई ठिकाना न था।
‘हे प्रभु! मुझे धनुर्विद्या का गूढ़तम ज्ञान प्रदान करें। आप मुझे उन श्रेष्ठतम तीरों के बारे में ज्ञान दें जिसका ज्ञान यक्षों, गंधर्वों और महर्षियों के पास है’। भगवान शिव ने विश्वामित्र को ऐसा ही वरदान प्रदान किया और लीन हो गए। शक्ति के नशे में चूर हो कर विश्वामित्र ने मन ही मन सोचा कि अब मैं उस वशिष्ट को सबक सिखा कर रहूंगा। अब मैं अपने पुत्रों और अपने अपमान का बदला लूंगा। ऐसा सोच कर वह वशिष्ट के आश्रम की ओर चल पड़े।
जब विश्वामित्र वशिष्ट के आश्रम पहुंचे तो उस समय वशिष्ट अपनी पूजन में निमग्न थे। दूसरे कई ऋषि उनके पास बैठे अपनी पूजन कर रहे थे। अपनी शक्ति के मद् में चूर और अपने विजय पर निशंक, विश्वामित्र वशिष्ट की ओर दौड़ पडे़। सभी ऋषि खतरे को भांप कर भय से इधर-उधर भागने लगे। उनके चीख-चित्कार से वशिष्ट का ध्यान भंग हो गया और उन्होंने विश्वामित्र को सामने पाया।
वशिष्ट ने शांत चित बैठे हुए चारों ओर देखा। उन्होंने देखा कि उनके शिष्य और ऋषिगण विश्वामित्र के प्रहार से घायल हो गए हैं और भय से इधर-उधर भाग रहे हैं। उन्हें देख कर वशिष्ट ने उन्हें शांत हो जाने के लिए कहा और अपने योग-दण्ड को अपने सामने स्थापित कर दिया। अब विश्वामित्र वशिष्ट के बिलकुल समक्ष आ गए थे। उन्होंने वशिष्ट पर अपना पहला बाण छोड़ा। पर यह क्या, आश्चर्य, घोर आश्चर्य! दण्ड ने उस बाण को निगल लिया।
विश्वामित्र की क्रोध का कोई ठिकाना ही न था। उन्होंने एक के बाद एक कई अस्त्रों से वशिष्ट पर प्रहार किए, पर सब व्यर्थ। उनका हर वार बेकार ही गया और सभी को दण्ड अपने में विलीन करता चला गया। विश्वामित्र की निराशा का कोई अंत ही न था। तब उन्होंने मन ही मन कहा- दिघ बलं, शस्त्र बलं, ब्रह्मतेजो बलं, बलं। अर्थात ब्रह्म तेज के आगे सभी शस्त्र बल निस्तेज हैं और केवल वही बल सही अर्थों में अपनाने योग्य बल है। दुःखी पर दृढ़ होकर विश्वामित्र पुनः तपस्या करने के लिए निकल पड़े। इस बार उनका लक्ष्य भगवान ब्रह्मा को प्रसन्न कर उनसे आर्शीवाद प्राप्त करना था।
विश्वामित्र ने पुनः कठोर तपस्या करनी प्रारम्भ कर दी। सैकड़ों वर्ज बीत गए पर भगवान प्रत्यक्ष न हुए। फि़र भी उन्होंने हार नहीं मानी और अपनी तपस्या में तल्लीन बने रहे। विश्वामित्र की कठोर तपस्या से अंततः भगवान ब्रह्मा प्रसन्न हुए और उन्हें आर्शीवाद देते हुए बोले, ‘हे राजा विश्वामित्र! मैं तुम्हारी तपस्या से अत्यन्त प्रसन्न हूं। आज मैं तुम्हें राजऋषि की उपाधि प्रदान करता हूं।
पर विश्वामित्र का लक्ष्य तो कुछ और ही था। उन्हें तो बह्मऋषि बनना ही था। उन्होंने अपनी कठिन तपस्या जारी रखी। एक हजार वर्षों की कठिन तपस्या के बाद भगवान ब्रह्मा पुनः प्रसन्न हुए और उन्होंने विश्वामित्र को ऋषि की उपाधिा प्रदान की। पर विश्वामित्र अपनी तपस्या से एक क्षण के लिए भी अडिग न हुए, उन्हें अपना लक्ष्य जो प्राप्त करना था। कई हजार वर्षों की तपस्या के बाद भगवान ब्रह्मा पुनः प्रसन्न हुए और उन्होंने विश्वामित्र के सामने प्रकट हो कर कहा कि तुम अब महर्जि बन गए हो। इस पर भी विश्वामित्र दुःखी नहीं हुए। उन्हें अपने आप पर पूर्ण भरोसा था और अपनी सफ़लता पर भी।
उन्होंने अपनी कठिन तपस्या जारी रखी। इस काल में उन्हें अनेक कठिनाइयों और परीक्षाओं का सामना करना पड़ा। उनकी कठिन तपस्या से पूरे ब्रह्माण्ड में हलचल होने लगी। स्वयं देवराज इंद्र ने उनकी तपस्या को भंग करना चाहा पर उनके हाथ निराशा ही लगी।
अंततः भगवान ब्रह्मा सभी देवताओं के साथ विश्वामित्र के समक्ष उपस्थित हुए और उन्होंने विश्वामित्र को ब्रह्मऋषि का पद प्रदान किया। पर विश्वामित्र को यहां भी संतुज्टि न थी। उन्होंने सभी देवताओं से आग्रह किया कि वह इस पद को तभी स्वीकार करेंगें जब स्वयं वशिष्ट उन्हें ब्रह्मऋषि से संबोधित करेंगें। देवताओं के निवेदन पर वशिष्ट ने विश्वामित्र से कहा कि अब आप वास्तव में ही एक ब्रह्मऋषि हैं।
इस प्रकार विश्वामित्र ने अपनी कठोर तपस्या और आत्मबल से एक राजा से ब्रह्मऋषि बनने तक का मार्ग पूरा किया। अपने काल में वो श्रेष्ठतम ऋषि थे और उनकी श्रेष्ठता इसी बात से जानी जा सकती है कि स्वयं भगवान विष्णु ने भगवान राम के रुप में जन्म ले कर विश्वामित्र से दीक्षा प्राप्त की और अपने जीवन में एक श्रेष्ठ व्यक्तित्व बने। दृढ़ इच्छाशक्ति, आत्मबल, जीवन में आगे बढ़ने की ललक, अभय जैसे गुणों से विभूजित होने के कारण ही विश्वामित्र के व्यक्तित्व को आज भी भारतवर्ष की श्रेष्ठतम विभूतियों में गिना जाता है।
