The Badrinath area is mentioned to as Badari or Badarikaashram in Hindu Holy Books. It is a place blessed to the Supreme Lord Vishnu, particularly in Vishnu’s dual form of Nara-Narayana. Thus, in the Mahabharata, Krishna addressing Arjuna, tells “Thou wast Nara in a former body, and, with Narayana for thy companion, didst perform dreadful austerity at Badari for many myriads of years.” meaning that in your earlier life you as Nara and I as Narayana performed great penance at Badrinath for many years.
One myth has it that when the goddess Ganga was invited to run down to earth to help suffering humanity, the earth was unable to withstand the force of her descent. Consequently the mighty Ganga (Ganges) was split into twelve holy channels, with Alaknanda river as one of them. Another Myth says that Lord Vishnu was meditating in this region and beloved Lakshmi stood next to him shielding him from scorching sunlight and turned herself into a Badri called ‘BADRI VISHAL’ and Vishnu being her lord (Nath) this place was named as BadriNath.
The mountains around Badrinath are stated in the Mahabharata, when the Pandavas were said to have expired one by one, when they climbing the slopes of a peak in western Garhwal called Swargarohini, literal meaning “The Ascent to Heaven’. The Pandavas passed through Badrinath and the town of Mana, 4 km north of Badrinath, on their way to Svarga (heaven). There is also a cave in Mana where according to myth Sage Vyasa wrote Mahabharata.
The area around Badrinath was celebrated in Padma Purana as abounding in spiritual treasures. Badrinath was re-established as a main pilgrimage site by AdiShankara in the ninth century. In earlier days, pilgrims used to walk hundreds of miles to visit Badrinath temple. In recent time its fame has increased considerably. The temple in Badrinath is also a holy pilgrimage site for Vaishnavites. Badrinath is also gateway to several mountaineering missions headed to mountains like Nilkanta.
As per the Bhagavata Purana, “There in Badrikashram the supreme being (Vishnu), in his incarnation as the sages Nara and Narayana, had been undergoing great penance since time immemorial for the welfare of all living entities.” Badri denotes to a berry that was said to grow plentifully in that area, and nath means “Lord of “. This place has been a land of penance and not only great sages, Lord Vishnu, but even SadGurudev has performed penance here for many years and is thus a divine land for each and every disciple too.
SadGurudev Kailash Ji conducted Manjul Mahotsava shivir in year 2012 on this divine land. This was one of the greatest successful shivirs that has been accomplished in past several years. Looking at the remoteness of this location, it is even difficult to make arrangements for just ten people but by grace of Gurudev Ji, more than five hundred people attended this spiritual camp and all were amazed to be a part of this place.
This place is surrounded by natural beauty all around. The divinity of this place is that a person feels relieved of his sufferings by just reaching there. There is a warm water spring in the temple premises and taking a bath in it is not only extremely refreshing, it is also acclaimed to cure skin diseases. There is BrahmaKapal pilgrimage in the nearby location which has been highly acclaimed to perform the Pinda Daan (offerings to relieve ancestors from their unfulfilled desires and provide them a path so that they can get a rebirth). One can also perform small rituals under the guidance of Gurudev at this place to eradicate the sins or any ill-effects of Tantra Ritual that has been performed by your enemies.
As the water poured from the sky gets wasted in a dessert whereas the same water gets collected in a tank for greater use, similarly the divine energy poured by Gurudev too can’t be accumulated by everyone. One needs to get to a divine level to become capable to hold this divine energy. One needs many years of penance to reach to such a level but if a person gets initiated at any pious pilgrimage, the divine energy remains intact with the person and that is the reason why Gurudev keeps on arranging shivirs at these divine lands so that His disciples can get maximum benefits.
