Suddenly a shadow started to approach him quickly and it brought a smile on the face of Bhishma. The person reached near Bhishma with his elegant walk and now his face was clearly visible under the light of the lantern burning near Bhishma. The person was none other than Lord Krishna, who was wearing yellow robes and was looking brilliant. The three lines rising from his forehead were showcasing His greatness and divinity.
“Pranam Pitamah!”, Lord Krishna offered his respect toward Bhishma.
“Pranam Gurudev!”, Bhishma replied by joining both his palms.
Lord Krishna was not expecting these words from Bhishma.
“Yes Janardan! Now please have some mercy on me, don’t create more illusion before me. I am already defeated and dusted, why are you further hurting me.”, said Bhishma.
Lord Krishna didn’t say anything. “O Lord! You will remain silent; you won’t speak up? I will never find an opportunity you talk to you again in such a solitude. Please speak up!”, requested Bhishma.
Lord Krishan still didn’t say anything.
“Does it mean you have still not forgiven me? Looks like the sin of me keeping silence when Draupadi was attacked is still with me and even now my Guru is annoyed with my misdeed….”, tears came in the eyes of Bhishma.
“No, no Pitamah! You were serving Hastinapur at that time.”, said Lord Krishna. “You are taunting dear Lord!”, said Bhishma in repentance.
Again, there was a silence.
“Perhaps you are right, I would have been happier if you protested the act of Dushaashana….anyhow, let’s leave it. Please let me know why you have called me. I am standing before you, you can give me any command.”, said Lord Krishna.
“No commands Gurudev…..no commands. Right now, I am not Pitamah but your disciple and I am praying to you.”, said Bhishma.
Again, there was a silence. “Your wish!”, said Lord Krishna after some time.
“O Vasudev! I am near my death, I have lived my entire life with piousness and utter disciple, I have gained divine knowledge yet….”, Bhishma took a pause. “Yet what?”, asked Lord Krishan.
“Yet there are still many doubts in my mind, I still feel incomplete. I have studied Vedas, Shastras, Mimaansaas, still there is an emptiness within me. Is this the destiny of my life, am I going to die like this?”, a pain arouse in the words of Bhishma.
“Even though I am near to such a divine being like You, I still feel as if I have not been initiated in life. It looks like I am the most unfortunate one….Dear Lord! If you are pleased on me, then please bring an end to my doubts. This will give me peace and I will die happily. Please tell me the secret of Diksha, why it is considered the best? Why is it necessary? And if you find me the right candidate, please initiate me….”, requested Bhishma.
“You are wounded and very weak, you should not talk much, you need rest…”, replied Lord Krishna.
“Oh! My misfortune, dear Lord has yet not forgiven me. What a sinner I am, who has fallen from the eyes of the Lord who has the most sacred heart, who is ever ready to help His devotees, who removes all the sorrows of His devotees!”, tears flowed out of the eyes of Bhishma.
“Bhishma, you know I am hurt when I see tears in the eyes of my devotees. Cheer up, I will clear your doubts.”, said Lord Krishna.
“Bhishma, undoubtedly, you are among one of the best personalities in the current era. You are a great warrior and a learned man, you are virtuous too, yet you are incomplete. Do you know why?”, asked Lord Krishna.
“No, my Lord! This is what I want to know.”, said Bhishma.
“You are known as a great warrior, undefeatable, everyone acknowledged your achievements. Even though you are an epitome of sacrifice, you have practiced the most difficult celibacy throughout your life, yet you are forced to ask me what the reason behind your emptiness is. Do you have any answer, son of Ganges?”
Bhisma joined both his palms and spoke with full reverence, “Vasudev! I can’t take it anymore. Please tell me reason behind my emptiness. I feel so helpless in life.”
“Because you never attained Guru in your life and thus you an uninitiated. This is the reason behind all your sorrows and due to this you feel emptiness in life. You have mastered several aspects of life; however, you left the most essential part of it. I am astonished how a learned man like you can make such a mistake. You were unable to understand that to nourish a plant healthy, one just need to water the roots instead of watering all the leaves.
It is Guru Diksha that helps a person to grow in all the aspects of life. The person gains knowledge to differentiate between right and wrong. Then such a person can’t tolerate any action towards the dignity of other persons too.”, said Lord Krishna.
Tears continued to flow from the eyes of Bhishma hearing these harsh words from Lord Krishna.
“Deeyate Iti Diksha” i.e. what is given is Diksha. After getting initiated, a disciple’s body automatically gets filled with the penance, auspiciousness, knowledge, brilliance and braveness of the Guru. Then, such a disciple doesn’t have to wander around in this world to attain these virtues.”, Lord Krishan continued.
“All the knowledge gets poured within the disciple. Then there is no need to study Vedas and Puranas. He gets liberated from all the karmas even after doing all the deeds. The biggest boon is such a person doesn’t have to reborn in any inferior form but rather takes rebirth in the form of human being only.
And if the disciple has a strong determination and is fully devoted towards the Guru, then such a disciple can even reach to the greatest level of spiritual world, Siddhaashram, and can freely roam around there.
Diksha is the only way by which a disciple can attain success, wealth, prosperity, valour, health, happiness and attraction. Along with this, Diksha can help the disciple to reach to the highest level of spiritualism, to attain full control over mind and soul and reach to the level of Paramhans.
What all should I say Bhishma, Diksha is the Vedas, Upanishads, Gayatri, Omkar, religion and nirvana. Thus, a person must leave all other deeds and take refuge in the Guru and get initiated from Him.”, said Lord Krishna.
Then Lord kept quiet for a moment and strongly hit Bhishma’s chest with His right toe. Bhishma at once reached into the state of ecstasy, it appeared as if a divine energy entered his body and all his pores got energized. On opening his eyes, he found Lord Krishna smiling before him.
“Bhishma, you are initiated now! Now you can continue to stay on this arrow bed without any pain. All your doubts and emptiness has been burnt now and you have become pious and conscious. Now, you are as pure as a gold purified in fire. You will be able to leave your body whenever you want and can come with me to Siddhaashram. I am blessing you.”, said Lord Krishna.
“I am blessed Gurudev!…I am blessed”, cried Bhishma out of joy. Lord Krishna quickly turned back, He had to prepare Pandavas for the next day’s battle.
The dawn was approaching …however, the light within Bhishma was thousand times more brilliant that that of the approaching sun.
