Your eyes should get filled with tears when you are unable to see Him. If you are at such a level, if you have such an affinity towards your Guru, then consider you have achieved consciousness in life. You all should attain a stage where you should feel anxious if you can’t see your Guru for one week. You must feel uneasy and try to meet Him, you must feel that none of your work looks interesting and even the Guru should feel this uneasiness, why the disciple hasn’t come, what happened to him, he must have come by now. If one attains such a stage, then that disciple has reached the stage of consciousness.
And you people sometimes start chanting Hanuman Chalisa. Nothing significant will happen in your life by chanting this Hymn. You can perform yagna for the whole life pouring several kilograms of ghee or oil into the fire and chanting Lakshmi Aarti and your father and forefathers did the same and so can you! However, Lakshmi never came before your ancestors and will neither appear before you like this. Lakshmi can’t be pleased by chanting Aarti or pouring ghee, there is a separate method to appease Her.
That other path is the path of becoming conscious not a corpse. Your life is like a corpse, and you are bound within a small circle which includes your wife, your children, your mother and father and some twenty-twenty five thousand pieces of paper and that’s all. You have nothing apart from all these! You need to step outside of that small circle and step into this bigger one, which is the path of sadhanas; but for that you should have service towards your Guru.
If you feel that Hanuman Ji will help you win a lottery by an offering of some sweets of five rupees, then He will win a lottery for Himself, why for you? There was a temple of Lord Hanuman and separated one kilometer apart was a temple of Lord Ram. One person reached Lord Ram’s temple and started praying to Him, “Shri RamChand Kripalu Bhaj Man Haran Bhavbhaya Daarunam” and after that offered food to Him.
Lord Ram was appeased and appeared before him, “What happened my child?”
He said – My wife is lost. Lord Ram said – Look, this is not my department. One kilometer afar is a temple of Lord Hanuman. He looks after such cases. Even my wife was lost, and I couldn’t find her. He was the one who found her. You should also go to Him.
Here there are various departments. If you go to Lord Ram and seek his help to find your wife, then Lord Ram will not be able to help you in this case. You will have to go and seek Lord Hanuman’s favor. And if you go to Lord Hanuman and pray to Him to help, find a suitable match for yourself then He will reply that I am myself a bachelor. I couldn’t find a match for myself then how can I help you. We have segregated Gods and have assigned tasks to them. Thus, there is no advantage praying to Gods and giving them various offerings!
To serve means to serve with selflessness. There should be no selfish intentions behind that service. And you should serve and serve along with sacrifice, and sacrifice of something which is most dear to you.
If you have five kilograms of sweets and you offer one piece of it to someone, then that is not a sacrifice. If you have only one chapatti and you offer half of it to someone then that is a sacrifice. However, the sacrifice should only be made where it is worthy.
If you buy a kurta for me by sacrificing your money, then this sacrifice is worthless. This is because I already have fifty kurtas so your kurta will be useless for me. If you offer me sweets, then it is also a waste because I don’t eat sweets. If you offer me a box of sweets, then it is of no use for me.
Instead of that if you do some work related to society and all those people who helped in building this hall are getting a part of this holy deed. Even though I bought the land, yet all those people who helped in construction are liable to get some benefit from this…no matter it be the hundredth part or be it thousandth part, it is irrelevant. Something good is happening here, if I hadn’t bought this land, someone might have opened a bar here. However, it is good luck of those people who created this hall and sadhanas are being performed here.
Now if you add some more facilities here, then it is your sacrifice. It will be of more use for all those who come here and perform sadhanas. There is no use in giving me more clothes or offering money to me or offering any sweets.
To serve corresponds to that work which is done by you and is useful for the common man. You can yourself see that the board here is not good; I should go and get a good board for here. I am not saying this so that you should go and bring a board, this is just an example. You can look for such things around you, maybe in the temple of Goddess Santoshi or Goddess Jagadamaba, wherever you have a feeling of sacrifice and wherever there is a place worth sacrificing.
Serve, then sacrifice and then surrender oneself in hands of Guru. Surrendering means whatever we are today; we should surrender that feeling into the feet of Guru and completely get amalgamated within Him. Once you amalgamate yourself in Guru, you will be able to obtain everything in life. When the tumbler gets completely empty, then it can be fully filled. If your mind, your brain or your heart is filled, then I can’t write a new letter there, my preaching will go as a waste.
If you bring a completely empty paper before me, then you will be able to read out whatever lines of wisdom I put into it. If it is already filled with lies, hatred, tricks, jealousy then what can I put into it? Where can I put it? To surrender in the feet of Guru means that whatever I am, I am completely empty. I have lived my life and now I wish that you should teach me how to live a life, I am ready to become whatever you want to make out of me, you tell me how to do it. I will follow all your orders.
Then there is no use of the authority that you hold in society. It is useless that you are a millionaire or a famous personality. To surrender in the feet of Guru means that you are nothing now; you can’t surrender in the feet of Guru and yet carry an attitude of being a famous man or that you are a very wise person. This is not surrendering in the holy feet of Guru.
Surrendering means you are nothing, I am absolutely empty now, I don’t have any authority or money. Whatever there is, that is left behind at home; I am just a person standing in front of you to obtain your grace. When he gets these feeling, then he becomes a disciple after becoming a conscious man. Then only, he becomes a disciple, he doesn’t become a disciple from the beginning. First, the person is an anxious human, then the person becomes a conscious human and when all the three points of a conscious human appear in life, then only the person becomes a disciple.
In Sanskrit, a disciple means coming closer. A disciple comes closer to the Guru. Coming near is not to stand before him with horns locked together. Coming closer means coming closer eternally, your heart and my heartbeat should become coherent. This is known as coming closer to Guru.
When the disciple is on the third stage, he comes even closer to Guru. Coming closer means, he doesn’t have any thought of himself, then he doesn’t have any questions of doubts, then there is no doubt that the person standing in front of me is a normal man or a God. Then he is filled with just one thought and that is he is my Guru and Gurur Brahma, Gurur Vishnu and he is everything for me.
When he touches the holy feet of Guru with such thought, then he doesn’t see skin there. He then witnesses Haridwar there, he finds Mathura there and he finds Kashi there. His eyes get filled with tears when he becomes a disciple….. and then he learns the knowledge of surrendering oneself in the holy feet of Guru.
And when he reaches such a stage, the Guru grants him all the boon. There is no give and take relationship here. To get into the heart beats of the Guru means that we should get such close to Guru that our soul and His soul get amalgamated, His body and our body get amalgamated. Every moment there should be a thought about how I can please Him. This is because even the Guru’s body is yours now. If a thorn pierces Guru’s feet, then you also feel the pain. You should feel that even though you don’t have any pain, then why there is such an anxiety, something is definitely wrong. This can happen only if your soul gets attached to my soul. And when they get united, you will become a disciple.
Meera said, “Ankhiyan ki kari kothari”, I will create a room in my eyes, “Putali Palang Bichaaye” and will create a bed of my pupil in it.
“Ankhiyan Ki Kari Kothari Putali Palang Bichaaye
Palakan Ki Chik Daari Ke Piyu Ko Liya Rijhaaye ”
I will use my eyelids as a curtain to please my beloved. I wish this because when this happens,
“Na Main Dehkun Aur Ko Na Tohe Dekhan Deyun”
I will not be able to see anyone, nor will I allow you to see anyone else.
When Kabir reached such a state, he said, “Main to Ram Ki Bahuriya”. It is mentioned in Shishyopanishad that Guru and disciple are just like lovers. This is because the most pious relationship in this world is the relationship of lovers, much pious than that of mother-father or brother-sister or sondaughter relationship.
There is a freshness in this relationship; everyday there is a desire to meet the beloved. If for a single day the lover can’t see his beloved, he feels the entire day went in vain. He tries to console his heart. What could have happened to her, there must be some reason why she has not come today? Maybe she is sick or his parents must have stopped her…..her father is very cruel, I will twist his neck if I get a chance someday…she has not reached till now…I have asked her to meet at Cannaught Place, still there are five more minutes remaining, let me wait a bit more, she will definitely come. She is not at fault; her father is a big bastard….and you wait for her for next two to three hours. What must have happened, should I go to her home, what will happen if her father sees me?
He will still go and will try to get a glimpse of her and then will remain anxious for the entire night. Now there is no telephone, how can I call her? Mother always picks up the phone, this telephone can get freedom only if this old lady dies and the entire night will pass like this only. This anxiousness exists because this is the relationship of lovers. This is not a relationship between husband and wife – if you had your food then it is fine, if not have it tomorrow.
This happens…the same beloved for which you have spent so much time wandering around her for last two years, you were not even feeling lively without her and the moment you married, the love and that enthusiasm dies out…no attraction remains towards her….
And then people start looking for a new beloved. Now she has become a wife, now what’s her use? She will complain that you come so late from the office, and you will reply that I have loads of work in the office. I have not signed any contract to come home at five in the evening. She is the same beloved for whom you had such great feelings. She will say she has not eaten the food and you will reply that there must be a stomach ace that you have not eaten the food. Go and visit a doctor or take a medicine…. now all that attraction has died out. There can be no attraction between husband and wife.
Due to this reason, I have said that the highest relationship in this entire universe is that of lovers and the same relationship should be there between Guru and disciple. Something like this should happen if a time of 3 pm was given for the meeting and if due to some reason the meeting can’t be held then there should be an anxiety. The disciple should try to look for the Guru.
However, this state can only be attained after attaining all we have wished for in life. How long have you wished to live such a pathetic life where there is no difference between an animal and us? What is the significance of attaining Guru in life if we die as a normal being, struggling in every aspect just like any other common person.
There is no difference between a true disciple and a Guru as a true disciple completely amalgamate oneself in Guru. As Guru Gorakhnath once said, Ghat Ghat Gorakh, Ghat Ghat Meen i.e. Guru GorakhNath and His Guru MatsyendraNath are not separate. Wherever the disciple is, the Guru remains with him. How can a Guru remain far from His disciple, Guru never boasts about Himself, He never claims about His existence without the disciples. This is the specialty of Meen or Gurudev.
Talks, visiting places hold no significance to such disciples as
Jiske Piv Pardesh Basat Hain, Likh Likh Bheje Pati,
Mere Piva More Hiya Basat Hain, Main Kahi Aati Na Jati,
i.e. people send letters to their lover who stays far away from them; however, I don’t send any letters because my lover resides within my heart.
Once Guru Nanak Dev Ji was on His journey along with His disciples and decided to take a rest. A Sufi saint was residing very near to their halt location. The disciples of both thought that it would be great if their Gurus about something great by means of their discussions. Both the parties tried their best and a meeting was arranged between the two Gurus. However, when the Gurus sat in front of each other, they just kept on looking at each other with a divine smile on their face. After about an hour, Guru Nanak Dev Ji said, “How beautiful thoughts you have shared with me.” The Sufi saint replied, “Your explanations were also great.”
Great saints communicate like this only. They don’t speak anything, yet they teach a lot. Gurudev too doesn’t speak out so much, but what He tells us is crisp and clear and goes direct into our heart.
Instead of advertising Himself, He has tried to get deeper into the hearts of His disciple to make us understand that you are Gorakh and I am your MatsyendraNath. Gurudev have put a lot of efforts for His disciples.
He has nurtured all of us like flowers and has irrigated us with His sweat. He has given us a unique blend of both softness as well as courage so that we can offer our love to the needy ones and can stand tall in front of all the evils of society.
Gagan Mandal Me Aundha Kuan, Tahan Amrit Ka Basa.
Sagura Hosi So Bhar-Bhar Piya, Nigura Jaaye Piyaasaa.
i.e. there is a well of elixir in this body (the Sahastraara Chakra) and the one who has a Guru drinks this nectar without any bounds. However, a person who doesn’t have a Guru remains thirsty and dies, remaining deprived of this elixir.
When a disciple completely amalgamates Guru in oneself, his body starts to emit the same fragrance as that emitted by the Guru’s body and the joy of disciple is that when the Guru walks, the disciple walks; when the Guru speaks, the disciple speaks; when the Guru laughs, the disciple laughs; eating drinking, sitting and roaming around all starts to happen with Guru. The disciple starts enjoying decomposing one’s smaller existence and becomes a part of that greater existence called Guru.
The incarnation day of Guru is not any normal festival. This is the day when the Guru came to this planet just for His disciples. He took birth as a human being and went through all the trouble some processes defined by society just for us, He took all these pains and suffering just for us, He took all our troubles and problems with a smile on His face just for us. A true disciple understands that even the Guru wishes to meet all His loving disciples on this great day so that He can bestow His love, His affection on His disciples and fulfill their wishes.
Thus, it is our obligation towards our Guru to visit and greet Him on this great day and offer our reverence in His holy feet. It is our duty towards our Guru to attain something worthy in life, to become someone great so that He feels proud of us, to bring a smile on His face and to celebrate this day with love, with joy and with sacredness.
