In Sanskrit, Durga means “a fort” or “a place that is difficult to conquer”. Goddess Durga is sometimes referred to as Durgatinashini, which literally translates into “the one who eliminates sufferings.” She is the Mother Goddess & protector of all human beings. She has nine manifestations & is the main deity of the Hindu religion. The Goddess is also known as Triyambake, or the three-eyed Goddess. Her left eye represents desire & the right eye represents action. Her third eye represents knowledge. She is usually shown riding a lion or tiger, representing strength & fierceness.
She also holds weapons & is said to control the divine energies. Each weapon has a symbolic important & are as mentioned below:
Goddess Durga symbolizes the divine forces known as divine power that is used against the negative forces of evils. She protects her devotees from evil powers & safeguards them. Goddess Durga is the combined form of powers of Goddesses Lakshmi, Kali & Saraswati. Durga, also called Divine Shakti, protects mankind from evil by destroying all sorts of evil forces – negative energy & short comings like jealousy, arrogance, anger, greed, hatred etc.
Life means new surprises each moment & one never know when a friend would turn into a foe or some person might assume a hostile stance. And if one wishes to launch a new venture one must remain cautious of the mischief makers bent on causing trouble in the works. What more it might not even be an obvious enemy that one is up against. Posing as a friend could be an enemy, eagerly waiting for a chance to stab one in the back.
One might well succeed in warding off the attacks coming from expected sources, but many catch one unawares & leave one struggling to keep life going on smoothly. Even if one is equipped with a daring spirit, one can possibly take on at most two or three foes at a moment. A series of attack coming from several sources instead of proving to be hearty competition could mean loss of precious time, energy, money & even health and life.
It would also be sheer naivety to expect such hatred & jealousy to spring up only at one’s workplace, for even one’s home, family or circle of relatives could turn into a battleground. It is not uncommon to see a brother lust after one’s blood, or one’s life partner turn into a predator on trivial issues. Things take a plunge for the worst when these very close ones start to opt for low tactics like black magic, false lawsuits & physical attacks.
Life becomes fraught with worries, constant fears, ill health & loss of wealth due to such negative influences in life. In such situations, the only possible path for the person is seeking divine help. Sadhanas alone can help one overcome such persistent foes, for Vedic rituals are a wonderful source of Shakti or divine power which not just fills one with physical strength & stamina rather also strengthens one mentally & spiritually.
Undoubtedly, there is nothing which can be accomplished without the essence of power in this world. Due to this reason, the sadhanas of Goddess Shakti is recommended for everyone in life. Even the Trinity Gods – Brahma, Vishnu & Shiva have the various Goddesses as their significant part. These Goddesses are the one who help them carry out their tasks efficiently.
The Indian spiritual texts have given a special place to Goddess Shakti & have even mentioned that without Her presence, Lord Shiva is just like a corpse. Bhagwatpad Shankracharya has mentioned in his work, Saundarya Lahri, that if Lord Shiva is not supported by Goddess Shakti, He will not be able to move. Shakti is the spirit of Lord Shiva; similar to the way a dead person can’t move, Lord Shiva will become stagnant.
Goddess Durga is omnipresent & can provide any boon to Her devotees. She is the one who can remove all the problems & troubles from our life. She is incomparable to anyone & is the epitome of greatness. She possesses the powers to both destroy as well as nurture. On one hand She can kill the demons & on the other hand She takes care of Her devotees & sadhaks just like a loving mother.
There are certain auspicious times during which it is easier to appease the mother Goddess & one such time is Gupt-NavRatris. When the Mother Goddess is Herself wishing to fulfil all the desires of the sadhak, then all that sadhak need is to follow the correct procedure to obtain Her blessings during these days. She is the one who provides all the worldly pleasures to the Gods. Great sadhaks & sages have appeased Her & were able to witness the ParBrahma by Her grace. Even Lord Ram performed Shakti Tatva sadhana of Mother Goddess to win over Ravana.
Presented below are two sadhanas related to Goddess Shakti which should be performed during this auspicious time to gain the blessings of the divine mother. Sadhaks can perform one or both the sadhanas on need basis. Both these sadhanas can be started from any day of the Navratri. If possible, try to accomplish them on the very first day & continue to chant one round of the mantra during the entire Navratri duration for best results.
