Tara, UgraTara, EkJata, Akshomya, Dharini, NeelSaraswati, Pingavarnaa – are the various adjectives of Goddess Tara. As per legacy, no major difference exists between Goddess Tara & Goddess MahaKali. The name NeelSaraswati came into existence due to occurrence of a special event in the life of Goddess Kali. Due to this reason, Goddess Kali & Goddess Tara are worshiped as a single entity in the states of Bihar & West Bengal.
There is a temple related to the form UgraTara in Saharsa district of Bihar & just few kilometers from the Rampur Haat station in West Bengal, exists the famous Temple of Goddess Tara, Tara Peetha – located near the highly violent cremation ground & is associated with the life of famous Tantrik Vaamkhepa.
Goddess Tara is not just the one who resides in cremation ground. She is the remover of all the troubles & is thus symbolically linked to the creation ground as one gets rid of all the troubles after reaching the cremation ground (at the end of life). In other words, this also shows the significance of Goddess Tara in life as one can get rid of all the troubles of life by worshiping Her while being alive. Performing sadhana or worship of Goddess Tara bestows a sadhak with both Riddhi & Siddhi. The Shastras have explicitly mentioned that an accomplished sadhak of Goddess Tara gets a Tola (around 11 grams) of gold every morning along the bedside.
The nine forms of Goddess MahaLakshmi – Vibhuti, Namrata, Kanti, Tushti, Keerti, Siddhi, Pushti, Srishti & Riddhi can only be attained after gaining success in Goddess Tara sadhana.
It is a fact that nothing can keep a Yogi bound at a place. However, there was something special about Tara Peetha that enchanted a Yogi. When the Yogi reached here, there was just a hut, that too without any door – air, jackals, dogs & everything and everyone had no restrictions in entering or exiting this hut. There is no surprise in observing a Yogi staying at cremation ground. When the loneliness of the mind becomes so dense, then sadhak makes up his mind to live in cremation ground only.
This was the place of Mother Goddess Tara & the Yogi was none other than Vamakhepa. The place was energized by the Goddess & was filled with jackals, dogs, vultures, Brahma Rakshas, spirits etc. A person who never got peace at any time in his life had finally reached here and was finding some solace.
Dogs were fighting among themselves for every piece of the remains of unburnt dead body & were making loud noises, vultures were flapping their wings sitting on the branches of the trees & the fumes emerging from the almost cold pyres were saying as if we are going to assimilate the remains of this body into the air. Someone might find these scenes most disturbing & for others it might be the most peaceful view.
This Yogi was none other than Vamakhepa, a great Tantrik who is still famous in the eastern part of India, mostly in Bihar & West Bengal, for his most astonishing stories. There are several stories related to the deep love between Mother Goddess Tara and Her mentally challenged son, Vamakhepa. This mentally challenged son was never accepted by the society & was tortured throughout. In his wander, the place that struck him most was this Tara Peetha. For him, the fumes from the burnt bodies were like that of Dhoop (incense), blood was like vermillion & bones were like flowers – it appeared to him as if everything around was a place of worship.
But worship place of whom – Lord MahaKaal or the Goddess who is sitting over MahaKaal, Goddess Tara or the sadhak who has left everything behind and has come to this place for eternal peace. The word Khepa means disoriented, and Vamacharan was given this adjective because he was dim-witted since birth and remained occupied within himself. Who knew this dim-witted person would become a great yogi & people would come from distance to just get abused by him!
Not only did Vamakhepa was unable to leave this place, Mother Goddess Tara too never left this place. Two great personalities existed on the land of West Bengal – Shri RamKrishna Paramhansa & Vamakhepa.
Both had a lot of similarities in their lives. Both were devotees of Mother Shakti, both used to fight, get angry or appease the Mother Goddess and both were true ascetics. It is said that Vamakhepa used to slap the idol of Mother Goddess if there was a delay from Her end saying, “When you know I don’t eat without you, then why do you delay?” And then the idol of Mother Goddess used to consume the food.
There was no special time allocated for worship, it could be 2 AM at night of 3 PM at day. He used to offer two flowers to Mother Goddess & the rest to himself, if he had to put on a mark, he used to do it on his forehead, would wear the garland himself & would eat the holy food himself…he had no consciousness that he & Mother Goddess Tara were two different entities. And most probably, even Goddess Tara never understood him different than Herself.
The way RamKrishna Paramhans assimilated Goddess Kali within himself, similarly, VamaKhepa was able to assimilate Mother Goddess Tara within himself & due to this reason they worshiped themselves considering the Goddess is present within. It is also a fact that at times Vamakhepa was also punished by Mother Goddess. It was seen several times that he was jumping within the temple & shouting out, “I won’t repeat it again”, and there were marks of stick emerging on his body.
There is hardly any sadhak who can perform the sadhana of UgraTara on this energized Tara Peetha. Sage Vashishtha was the first to perform the sadhana of Mother Goddess Tara and established PanchMundi hermitage here. Later, Vamakhepa transformed it into Lakshmundi hermitage with his efforts. Truly, Vamakhepa is a legendary yogi who is still remembered by a lot of sadhaks, people & yogis with a lot of reverence. Vamakhepa was able to attain all this by the grace of Mother Goddess Tara.
Solar eclipse is a specially energized time to attain superior Dikshas like MahaVidhya Dikshas. The sadhak must humbly request the Guru to get initiated with such divine Diksha. The aura during the eclipse period is such that the divine energy provided by the Guru easily gets absorbed as well as retained by the disciple & hence it becomes easier for the disciple to gain success in even MahaVidhya sadhanas.
However, appeasing the Mother Goddess in Her one of the Ten Mahavidhya’s form is not a child’s play. One needs pious heart, good karmas and a determination to attain the grace of Mother Goddess & to live a life of fulfilment. Keeping this in mind and out of pure love towards His disciples, SadGurudev will be initiating the sadhaks with Tara MahaVidhya Diksha to help them gain the necessary merits to successfully accomplish this sadhana & fulfil all their wishes.
Out of love, Gurudev will also be granting Tara MahaVidhya Yantra with this Diksha that is energized by the secret Naayayaasar procedure. Even though the Goddess is termed as the one who lives in cremation ground, one can easily include the worship of Goddess Tara in daily life via this yantra. Once the sadhak obtains such a yantra & places it at home, the sadhak need not perform any difficult & time consuming sadhana of Goddess Tara. This yantra assimilates all the 360 powers of Goddess Tara within itself and is as effective as the Tara Peetha.
It is difficult to attain various yantras in one’s life & it is even more difficult to worship & maintain them daily. Given the hasty life we all are living today, it would be difficult to find a few sadhaks who can daily worship a few hundred yantras. On the contrary, this yantra contains all the auspiciousness, just placing and worshiping this yantra can bring in all the good luck, prosperity & happiness in the life of the sadhak.
