Once a great Yagya was to be performed in the heaven and all Gods and Goddesses were participating in this divine event. All the thirty three crore Gods and Goddesses along with the nine planets were present. The sacred fire was lit up and Vedic rites were being performed. All the Gods and Goddesses were given seats as per their authorities.
However, it was Sage Narada who was given the seat below everyone else. This left Sage Narad a bit perplexed, and he felt insulted too. He asked Lord Brahma, “Even though I am your own son, why am I given such a lowly place to sit?” Lord Brahma said, “It is because you don’t have a Guru.”
Sage Narada always considered himself to be a great learned person and never searched for a true Guru. Thus, he didn’t have a Guru mantra. In other words, even though He keeps on reciting the names of God, he has never taken a mantra provided by a Guru at the time of initiation.
Realizing his mistake, he announced, “Whosoever I will see at dawn today, I will accept him as my Guru.”, saying so he left the ritual.
At dawn sage Narad saw an old fisherman walking with a net on his shoulder. Sage Narada rushed towards the fisherman and said, “You are the first person whom I have met at dawn. Thus, you are my Guru, kindly accept me as your disciple and initiate me.”
The old man looked at sage Narad astonishingly and said, “I am a poor fisherman. I catch fish and sell them in the market. You appear to be a Brahmin. How can a fisherman initiate a Brahmin? I don’t think I am worthy to be your Guru. Not only this, I have also never got initiation from a Guru and neither do I have any mantra to give you.”
Nevertheless, sage Narada continued to plead the fisherman. Seeking there was no way he can get rid of sage Narad, the fisherman agreed to be his Guru. Highly pleased by the acceptance, sage Narad requested from the old man to speak whatever was in his mind at that very moment and he will consider it as the Guru mantra.
The fisherman said “Hari Bol” and left for fishing.
Happily, sage Narada returned to the assembly and requested for a seat in front of the assembly as now he has both Guru as well as Guru mantra. The Gods and Goddesses couldn’t agree to Sage Narad’s claim and demanded to meet His Guru. Thus, sage Narada returned to the fisherman and told him the entire story and then requested Him to come with him. The old man said, “Disciple, I am too old to walk, and I am tired of my full day efforts. I can’t come along with you.” Listening these words from his Guru, sage Narad said, “I will carry you on my back to the place where the divine procedure is being carried out.”
Finally, sage Narada presented his Guru before the assembly & bowed down completely in his Guru’s feet. All the thirty-three Koti Gods and Goddesses were surprised how sage Narad can make an old fisherman his Guru. At that very moment the old man got transformed into Lord Shiva, who was also missing from this assembly earlier. Lord Shiva said, “As you have a Guru along with Guru mantra now, you will be given the first seat in the row to participate in this Yagya.”
There was no doubt left in anyone’s mind and sage Narad too understood the importance of Guru in life. In short, no matter what we attain in life, no matter how much wealth, prosperity, social status, power, authority we own, it is all negligible in front of Guru. Rather, they are all worthless if a person doesn’t have a true Guru in life. It is also important to understand what a true life is and how the Guru can guide us to understand the same.
The technique to understand the life, to have a complete harmony with life, the technique to learn this art, the technique to completely enjoy the life and to completely reach within oneself means meditation. Meditation means – when we get completely detached from the external world, we do not have any contact with the external world; the external world is just like a worthless piece for us. However, this is not possible normally.
This doesn’t happen because the human has two options before him, he has two thoughts, he is alive on the two philosophies – one thought process is the one which is generated by his brain and other is the thoughts that are generated by his heart.
Due to this reason all the saints and ascetics have unanimously said that one must gain control over the brain to understand this life. Devotion starts from the instance when the brain ends controlling a human being. Brain always pushes the person on the wrong path. It always frightens him, always creates a thought and produces such scenarios which mislead him. It builds mistrust for others because mistrust is the other name for brain. Brain is the one which feeds & nurtures the ego. Brain means I am something, I am a great personality, I am a knowledgeable person, I possess this capability, I have wisdom, I am educated, I am rich, I have consciousness, I possess all the worldly pleasures. Brain always encourages ego, nurtures it and doesn’t allow the heart to get control of the human. Brain can’t explain the essence of the human life; it can’t bring it to the state of consciousness.
Lalita was the best friend of Radha. Lalita had to take birth twenty-five times whereas Radha didn’t take a single birth. Both were best friends; both were very dear to Krishna. Krishna loved them equally, but what was the reason that Radha got the nirvana in the same life however Lalita had to take twenty-five births?
The main reason for this was that her heart had started to take control over her, her inner consciousness just had one thought that Krishna doesn’t love anyone else; if he loves her then he can’t love anyone else. It might be possible that he remains surrounded by gopis, however it doesn’t bother me. There can’t be hundreds of Radha and the reason for this was that she was in deep love with Krishna, so deep in love that she just used to see Krishna everywhere.
Only I can be Radha and only I will remain Radha and if Krishna loves anyone then that is me only because he can’t love anyone else, this is not possible. Even if someone used to tell Radha otherwise, she used to reply that this is impossible. Krishna can look at others, but he can’t love others and the reason for this was that Radha had killed her ego, and the killing of this ego is killing of the control of brain over your body. Lalita had ego, even though she was the best friend of Radha, even though she was her childhood friend, even though Lalita accompanied Radha wherever she went yet the brain always had complete control over her. She always used to think that perhaps Krishna loves Radha more than me, he attracts Radha more towards himself when he plays flute. The control of brain never allowed her heart to take over her, Lalita was not able to completely reach into her inner consciousness and she had to second, third, fourth and in her twenty-firth birth she became Meera.
Then her ego finally disappeared and then she said, “Mera to Girdhar Gopal, Dusro na Koi”, meaning there is no one else for me, there is only a single God for me, only one thought, only one philosophy and that is, “Jaake Sir Mora Mukut, Mero Pati Soi”, I don’t know any other than Krishna. And then she was able to attain nirvana, then she was able to reach into her inner consciousness and then she was able to finally meditate.
I have intentionally presented this example before you. Intentionally because a man can attain nirvana in a single birth only….and this is possible through the means of meditation. If even a single trace of ego remains within himself, he needs to take twenty-five births. It is possible that he may get rid of his ego after two births, may be after three births and may be after twenty births.
Radha was able to remove her ego in a single life only and was able to attain nirvana; she was able to completely amalgamate herself with Krishna because where there is ego, there can’t be nirvana, there can’t be Brahma, there can’t be consciousness, there can’t be true joy.
Due this reason all of you are sitting here and when I am going to explain about meditation, the means to reach the state of meditation, then it is utmost important that I should explain you that you are nothing. There is no ego in your life, when you leave this ego that you are a man, when you get rid of this ego that you are a professor, you are rich, you are poor, I am very dear to my Guru, I am very much away from Guru, I love or do not love the Guru, I am a female or a male. The moment you get rid of all these thoughts, you will climb on the first step of meditation.
The first step of meditation is the first step to reach within because mind always looks control outside; it always creates the thought that pushes a human to look outside only. The moment our heart gets activated; that very moment our connection with the external world starts to break. Then you don’t find any outside thing before you, meditation is the second name of activating your heart. It is necessary to detach oneself from the external world to extend the first step on path of meditation.
You must understand that there is nothing outside; you must consider your presence to other negligible. If I am in front of you, then it should be only me who is in front of you. This is because I know you, not from this life only but from the last twenty-five births you have taken. I know that every time this ego takes control over you.
Every time I warn you, every time I explain you that I will take you to the nirvana in this very life and that this is my guarantee. However, the clause of this guarantee is when you completely get rid of your ego, when you completely end yourself. Who you are and how you look like is immaterial. This life is far beyond what you perceive it. To take a birth and then finally get cremated is not life.
Life is an unbroken chain which is tied with many lives. I am the witness of your last forty-fifty years, I have been with you, I am aware of all your activities and I have advised. This is not the first time you are sitting before me. Every time I have advised you to attain the totality of life by means of Sadhanas. Your coming generations will not remember you for what you were capable of, rather they will remember you by what you achieved in your life.
And to obtain something, you must lose a lot…you must lose your external affairs, external looks, external consciousness and external thoughts. And then when will you sit with your closed eyes without moving any part of your body, you will move towards the path of meditation.
You are yourself and I am in front of you. This is called Dwait (where there is knowledge of someone else) and mechanism to reach the state of Adwait (where only you exist) is meditation. Dwait because I am sitting in front of you and both of us are supplement of each other. Till the time you don’t amalgamate into me, till the time you don’t reach within your inner consciousness this Dwait will remain as it is. And the mind will misguide you as to how can this Guru take me to complete totality in life?
Brain will always misguide you that how Guru Ji can guide me to Brahma? It will provoke you what will happen by just closing your eyes? It will delude you that what will happen even if Guru Ji has asked me to sit for half an hour with closed eyes? This Dwait will exist, and it will vanish only when you take a big step to jump into the ocean.
Even I have jumped in the ocean without any hesitation, without any thought in my life. Even I have wife, son, daughter, relatives and everyone but I jumped in this ocean and have obtained pearls out it. I have obtained pearls and I experienced it because I don’t believe in any thing that I hear; I speak only what I have seen through my eyes.
One who dares to jump into the ocean can fetch pearls out of it, and one who just sits on the shore can, one who keeps on thinking to jump in the ocean but doesn’t do it, one who stops after just step even if the Guru provokes him thinking that he has a wife, son, relatives and what will they think? What will happen?
How will it happen? Such a person can’t jump in the ocean. He takes birth in duality and dies in duality and it is the worst death that one can get. There is no major difference between the death of a dog and the death of such a person. The only difference is that the dog is thrown into the crematorium and such a person is carried to the crematorium on four shoulders.
The main aim of life is to attain the state of Adwait and this state means that there should be no difference between you and me. And I am using the word ‘me’ because I am your Guru. If you are a drop then I am your ocean and that drop must get mixed into the ocean, one needs to completely amalgamate in the feet of his Guru.
And I am speaking all this because you must become a seed, and when you will become a seed, then you can take a form of a shady tree afterwards. However, this is possible only if the seed is willing to get inside the earth. If the seed says that I don’t want to get buried in the earth, then the seed can’t get transformed into a tree.
And if it surrenders itself to the earth then certainly it will germinate and later it can become a shady tree under which thousands of persons can come and sit.
Even I was a seed, I got buried in the earth, I left my existence, I didn’t even think that I am a Brahman, my father is a rich man, I have a wife, son, I didn’t even think what will happen in the future? I just had one thought that I must burry myself within the earth…. I buried myself in the earth and I am a shady tree now under which thousands of disciples can rest now. They come and take rest, enjoy the shade.
Where there is day, night will follow. A coin has two faces, it is not possible that where there is happiness, happiness will always remain there, it is not possible. Misery will follow the happiness whereas bliss is always followed by bliss. Bliss is never followed by death, tensions can’t follow, hurdles can’t follow….and all this is possible by the means of meditation only.
I have not called you here to make you cower in front of the Gods and Goddesses; or to fold your hands in front of them. I am explaining you that how you can get rid of this cycle of birth and death within this life. I am explaining you that it is not advisable to take birth again and again. This is so because every time you take birth, you don’t even know where you are taking birth.
Sometimes you take birth in good surroundings and sometimes in worst. You take birth in excreta and then you grow-up and then with a lot of pains I hold your hands again. Then you start to gain some consciousness and then I explain you that this is not the correct way to live a life. Then I explain you how you can get rid of all this by the means of meditation.
Then for a moment a surge gets generated in you and it simultaneously gets subdued. Again, this wealth, majesty, husband-wife surrounds you and you forget yourself and this is an act of your brain. You can’t reach to this stage of meditation until you get rid of this brain, this ego.
You need to put conscious efforts to reach to the stage of meditation because this is the only means to reach to this stage. Now when I take you towards the path of meditation, towards immortality, then you have to detach yourself from the external world, you need to feel that no one is in close proximity to you, you are not tied to anyone, and you are free of all the ties and are floating without any constraints in the ocean.
One can become Divine by practicing meditation, one can become God by means of meditation. I am trying to explain you that you don’t have to look forward to Gods for their help, you don’t have to bow before them, you don’t have to chant their mantras, you don’t have to stand before like a dwarf before them. I am not saying that you stand below than the Gods. I am narrating the words of the Great Rishi who said
Poornamadah Poornamidam
Poornaatpoornmadachyate.
Poornasya Poornamaadaaya
Poornmevaavashishyate.
“ I am complete and want to amalgamate in the completeness”…..and I am explaining you that you are complete. All of you are standing before me to attain completeness.
What is important is that you should be standing at the point from which you need to jump. The moment you jump you will reach the ocean and the ocean is waiting for you with its arms open wide to hug you and to amalgamate you within because I am always with you.
When there is thunderstorm, I am with you in its noise, I am there with you when the cuckoo sings, my smile is present in the blooming rose. When you look anywhere, I am behind that thought. When you will get fully immersed in me, you will be left with only one thought that you must become complete in your life.
Now the question that arises is where to get immersed?
I am standing before you with my both arms opened. I am reminding you that you are drop of water and your entity is no more than that. Your life is similar to a drop of water that fells on a hot pan and the drop evaporates in fractions of seconds. In this way you won’t be able to achieve totality in life and such life holds no value and doesn’t have any aim.
If you want to attain true joy in life, you will have to learn the way to amalgamate yourself, you will have to learn the way to immerse your soul into that of your Guru, you will have to completely forget yourself and when you find such alive Guru in your life….those people are fortunate who attain an alive Guru in the life.
There are several dynasties that didn’t get Guru in their life. They got fraud Gurus, fraud saints, those who had the intention to plunder them but none who can guide them onto to the correct path in life, none who is there with them for several lives…such fortune happens once in a blue moon.
Guru may come anytime in front of you in your life and then two cases are there that may take place. First is that you cross the Guru and move ahead in life and the second is that Guru proceeds on his path and crosses you. If you are conscious, you will stick to your Guru’s feet and live your life as per his will.
We are all blessed with a divine Guru in our life. We are all blessed with the love and affection that our Guru showers on us. May this Guru Poornima bless all of us with the devotion, love and attachment towards our Guru and may all of us become capable to fully understand the essence of Guru in life!
