Paramhans Yoganand was a great disciple and sadhak. What all he attained from Swami Yukteshwar Ji is unparalleled and a glimpse of the same can be obtained by reading his book Autobiography of a Yogi. Presented below is an extract from the same great book that shows the significance of Guru in the life of a disciple.
“Gurudev, I am back”, my face was filled with shame while speaking out those words.
“Let’s go into the kitchen and see what all is there to eat”, said Shri Yukteshwar Ji in a very simple tone. It was as if I was meeting him after just a couple of hours instead of after several days.
“Gurudev, I went out of hermitage leaving behind my duties and it must have made you angry. I thought you will be very annoyed with me.”
“No, not at all! Anger is generated only due to unfulfilled wishes. I don’t expect anything from others; thus, their actions can’t be against my wish. I don’t use you for my benefit, I find happiness in your happiness!”, said Yukteshwar Ji.
“Gurudev! I have just heard of divine love till now, however I could feel that love now in your divine form. In this world, if a son doesn’t complete the task given by his own father, the father gets annoyed. However, there is not a minutest anger towards me even when I left the hermitage with so many uncompleted tasks. It must have caused a lot of trouble for you.”
Our eyes met and tears emerged from our eyes. I got filled with eternal bliss, I was already aware that divinity existed within my Guru and now I could feel divine love getting poured within myself.
After several days, one morning I went into the empty room of my Gurudev as I wanted to meditate there. Even after trying my best, I was not able to concentrate. My thoughts were flying the same way birds fly seeing the hunter. Suddenly, I heard voice of my Gurudev from a distance, “Mukund”.
Just like my thoughts, my mind also revolted, and I slowly murmured to myself, “Gurudev always asks me to meditate. He knows why I am here, and he must not disturb me!”
Gurudev again called me, but I continued to sit at the same place ignoring his call. He called me for the third time; this time the voice was a bit stern. I replied in a bit rough tone, “Gurudev, I am trying to concentrate.”
Gurudev said, “I know how you are concentrating. Your thoughts are flying like fallen leaves under the influence of wind. Come here!”
Knowing that Gurudev is aware of my failure, I went near him and stood dejected. “Silly boy! Mountains can’t fulfill your desires, but your wish will certainly get fulfilled” – There was so much love filled in his voice. Shri Yukteshwar Ji would hardly speak mysteriously. I got frightened and he patted his hand on my chest.
At that very moment, I felt my body was frozen, my breath rushed out of my lungs as if a magnet pulled it out. My soul and thoughts got free of my body, I felt they were coming out of my pores and my body felt like I was dead. However, for the first time I felt I was never completely alive earlier. At that moment, my existence was not just my body but it got spread across everywhere. I was able to see the roots of the trees as if the soil became transparent and not only the roots, but I was also able to witness the fluids moving within them. In other words, my vision got broaden to subatomic levels.
I could see everything happening in this world. Everything appeared before me like a movie and merged into a divine light. It was as if a sugar crystal gets dissolved within a glass of water when the water is stirred. I could feel eternal bliss within myself. It appeared to me as if I was never fully alive before in my life. I could feel the entire universe within myself. Light emerging from my navel area was scattering in all directions. The elixir was flowing in every drop of my blood, the sound of Omkar as well as the vibrations of nature was clearly audible to me.
Suddenly, my breath came back. With great disbelief I experienced the vanishing of my unending empire, and I again became a captive of my body. Gurudev was standing calmly before me. I tried to fall into his feet to thank him for the divine vision he showered upon me. However, he held me in between and said – “You just tasted the ultimate joy but don’t become engrossed in it. You have to accomplish several tasks in this world. Let’s first clean the porch and then we will walk on the banks of river Ganga”.
I picked up the broom as I understood that Gurudev is teaching me how to live a balanced life. A human being is not born just to gain spiritual upliftment, but he must also perform the other duties nature wants us to do. And this is exactly what our Gurudev teaches us in life. He just doesn’t preach to us to dedicate all our time to live a life in solitude and perform spiritual sadhanas but rather teaches us to maintain a balance between both spiritual and materialistic world. And that’s the essence of the divine energy, Diksha, that Gurudev blesses us with – this divine energy helps us to rise in both spiritual as well as the materialistic world. One can’t attain completeness till the time there exists any unfulfilled aspect of life. Thus, we must try and obtain this divine energy in our life and put in our best efforts to attain our goals.
The festivals of Navaratri and Diwali are special times to fulfill our desires of both spiritual as well as materialistic world. This month we are sharing sadhanas related to appeasing Goddess Durga, Kuber and Goddess Lakshmi to remove the shortcomings of our lives. Sadhaks should try to perform these sadhanas and get initiated with divine Dikshas to attain their goals.
It is mandatory to obtain Guru Diksha from Revered Gurudev before performing any Sadhana or taking any other Diksha.
